Over the past couple of weeks, HWF Woods staff/Rx Fire team has been able to conduct some “growing season” prescribed burns. Growing season burns are conducted in areas that have received regular prescribed fire and the litter is not very deep and the mineral soil can be found easily under the litter. These burns are more restorative in nature and best mimic the natural fire process. We hope to conduct more spring/summer burns in the next couple of months as weather allows. FASMEE (Fuel and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment) is a collaborative effort between the Forest Service, NASA, Tall Timbers, and multiple universities to assess and improve operational-use predictive models for wildfire response and prescribed fire implementation. In October 2023, we conducted a ~300 acre prescribed fire at the Fishlake National Forest in Utah. The Fishlake does some of the most rx fire of any forest out west. They also only use natural fire breaks (snow lines, fuel transitions, rivers, previously burnt areas, etc) instead of plowing fire lines, which I think is super cool! Because of their great fire management history, it's one of very few places where we could get away with setting an rx fire that would emulate wildfire conditions. There were teams on the ground, drones in the air, and three NASA airplanes flying at different altitudes collecting data on everything we could. Fire behavior, smoke dispersion, soil and fuel moisture, animal movements, microbes in the smoke, you name it! Our Tall Timbers team collected fuel moisture data to validate radar from one of the NASA planes. Hopefully, what we learn here will help improve models for fire and smoke behavior, calibrate new air and space-born sensors, and support the use of more good fire on the landscape. Prescribed Burn Update: 🔥 A huge thank you to the different agencies that were able to come out and assist us with the prescribed burn: Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the Nature Conservancy Cross Ranch! With their help we were able to ignite and complete nearly 300 acres of land yesterday. We still have a crew working on monitoring the prescribed fire to ensure that everything is safe and in control. For the time being we have a small diversion/closure on a section of the village trail where we have some hazard trees still smoldering. The trail remains open, we just ask that you respect the caution tape and go around it. Our trees will mostly likely continue to smolder over the next few weeks as they dry out, but this is nothing to worry about. One of my favorite things about fire season is that when stuff breaks, a dozen MacGyvers swarm into action! I'm trying to get signed off on a STOP (Specialty Tracked Equipment Operator) Taskbook so that I can use Scouts and Marshmasters on fires. Having the Scout break down mid-training made for a good lesson in trouble shooting. It seems like every aspect of firefighting has its own taskbook: chainsaw, bulldozer, GIS mapping, incident commander, base camp manager, helicopter... these taskbooks all ensure that whether firefighters are working at their home stations or are thrown in with 100 people from across the country on a big wildfire, everyone performing any given task can do so competently and safely. Things can go real south real fast when fire is on the ground. Scouts are UTV-sized vehicles on tracks with big water tanks and spray bars on the front and back. These can quickly create wet lines, which are usually areas of mowed or low, unmowed grass that are packed down by the tread and then wet with the spray bars to create a line from which fire can spread in one direction and not the other. In this pic, our safety shut-off malfunctioned, so a guy on the crew from Oklahoma was scrambling to fix it so we wouldn't have to scrap a day of burning. Success! Marshmasters are the larger, semi-amphibious tank-looking machines that can create wet lines, mow lines, or just move people through any type of wetland and even still open water areas. And they just look epic. We’re burning for prairies! 😉 Yesterday, we conducted a prescribed burn at the sanctuary. We do prescribed burns for many reasons, including woody species management and to increase heterogeneity in our prairies and restorations. The objective of this burn was to push back the growth of our cool season grasses, like smooth brome, and also create some heterogeneity or diversity across the prairie. The burn went well and created burned and unburned patches across the burn unit which met our objectives. We want to thank the volunteers and partners, like Pheasants Forever and the Nature Conservancy, who came and assisted with the burn. 🔥 Prescribed Burn Update: Natural Resources crews have finished ignitions on the China Grade Road portion of the plot, and with rain predicted for Saturday morning they spent today lighting along the Hollow Tree Trail, which is the lower line for the plot. After today, the crews will have reduced the fuels around the edges of this roughly 1,000 acre plot and be in a good position to reduce fuels in the middle of the plot later this year. Our hope is that this work will reduce fuel loads and prevent a second high intensity fire in this area like what we saw happen in the footprint of the Lockheed Fire, when the CZU Lightning Complex Fire incident reburned that area. Forsythe II Prescribed Burn update for the week of MONDAY APRIL 29, 2024🔥 The Forsythe II Prescribed Burn area received 6-8 inches of snow over the weekend of April 27-28. The perimeter of Unit 38C near 359.1 Winiger Ridge Road that was burned last week has been secured and this unit is now in patrol status. Fire crews are now doing planning and preparation work for potential ignitions for Unit 44, south of 97.1 Lazy Z Road. Appropriate conditions for an ignition period are not expected until the end of this week at the earliest. For notifications on ignitions, sign up for our email list and select "Forest Health & Fire: North of Hwy 72 (Coal Creek Canyon) to Hwy 119 Boulder Canyon (Nederland and Magnolia areas)". Weather conditions haven’t been great for prescribed burning at #WTREX Nebraska this week, so we have been embracing other training opportunities 📚 We’ve scouted some priority burn units for the preserve, undergone some medical training scenarios, learned more about how to communicate effectively, heard from Nebraska fire practitioners (thanks @ashley.oblander and Ben Wheeler of @pheasants_quailforever_of_ne!), and so much more! 🔥Forsythe II Prescribed Burn and Notable Smoke Update 4/23/2024 🔥 Fire managers are monitoring conditions for potential ignition tomorrow, Wednesday April 24, on the Forsythe II Prescribed Burn. Ignitions will be contingent on appropriate weather conditions falling within the parameters of the burn plan. Residents and visitors in the area should expect to see smoke and flames when operations are underway. The following areas in particular may see and smell smoke during this burn: Lakeshore subdivision, Crescent Village, Crescent Meadows, Gross Reservoir, Walker Park Ranch, Miramonte, Wondervu, Eldorado Canyon State Park, and parts of eastern Boulder County. Fire managers work closely with experts to minimize the impacts of smoke to the best extent possible. Air quality is carefully monitored before and during a prescribed fire and all prescribed burns comply with state air quality regulations to minimize impacts to communities. #REPOST @bigbasin_sp Our Natural Resource crews will begin a prescribed burn at Big Basin Redwoods State Park on Wednesday April 24th. This burn will likely continue for two to three weeks and will be focused on the heavy fuels along the edge of Johansen and Upper China Grade Roads that were created during a fuel reduction project in 2022 following the CZU Lightning Complex Fire incident. This burn will be staffed 24 hours a day while ignitions are completed and regularly monitored until completely out. The crews have also recently finished this season’s pile burning. 84 piles were burnt at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, 244 piles at Cowell’s Fall Creek subunit, and 100 piles at Big Basin. Conditions are "go" for prescribed burning operations planned for today at Banner Lakes State Wildlife Area. Smoke will be visible; please do not call 911 to report smoke in this area. Burning will only be conducted under specific guidelines established by DFPC, including having acceptable weather forecasts and fuels conditions that meet guidelines for safe and effective burning and adequate smoke dispersal. This Prescribed Fire Project is designed to reduce fire danger, increase native grass and vegetation health, create fuel breaks by removing fuels along dams to prevent fire spread between the east and west sides of the property, reduce non-native vegetation and trees along waterways, and increase waterfowl habitat through the reduction of water and shore-based plant species. Due to weather, we have rescheduled our 4/27 Conduct a Burn Workshop to TOMORROW 4/24. We still have some spots left for community members interested in gaining experience with prescribed burning. Come help us put some #goodfire on the ground to improve defensible space before wildfire season! We will gather at 9 AM to discuss the overview of the day and safety procedures. Then we will slowly burn one side of the area to the other. We will have water and tools on hand so people can spread out around the burn area and help monitor the fire. Staff from Nevada County RCD will explain what is happening as it’s going on and we all will gather again at the end to discuss how it went. We are planning on the burn ending around 1 PM, but if you are limited on time you are welcome to come for only the morning or afternoon.
