Day 14 Evans Bay Beach to Cog Park - 2.32km . Ahh...I’m getting so close to wrapping up this little project! It was such a gorgeous morning to get out for a cleanup. Not only did I get to wander the shores with a friend (thank you @ylime.kd for picking up rubbish with me!) but it felt so good to just pick up washed up rubbish today rather than tackle little dumpsites over and over again like the last few sections. . It was a pretty uneventful pickup until we stumbled across a metal street pole lapping at the shoreline when we were on our way back to the car. It was definitely a little awkward to walk down the running path with a 20 foot pole but we got it there! As we were putting it near the rubbish bin, we got yelled at by some random dude about leaving it there so it has been officially called into council for pickup. DAY 13 Maupuia Walkway to Evan’s Bay - 1.75 km (a portion of this is inaccessible because there is a secured port) . I feel so relieved to have wrapped up the Miramar peninsula this afternoon. The blatant disregard for keeping our public spaces clean was incredibly frustrating. Sadly the last section of it today mirrored the other days spent cleaning this coastline. I could easily identify the places people stopped off to eat by what they left behind. On repeat. I also found what I can only imagine was a tv or monitor of some sort-cords, computer hardware, big rectangular frames. 🤯 Who TF throws electronics into the ocean?!! . I did get to start the cleanup off with someone’s manifesto on how to treat women. I tucked it in my pocket to give it a read when I got home it was insane, giving off incel vibes. I’ll add some pages to the stories. . Thankful to leave that portion of the coastline behind, I moved on to the rock wall leading up to the beach I normally clean. It was exhausting to scale large boulders for an hour but I found a ton of stuff that had washed up, including pieces from a car bumper (I think), a big plastic seat-like thing, and a secret little beach exposed due to the low tide, which was full of washed up rubbish. Thankfully, I found an empty plastic bag to continue the cleanup as I had only brought one with me and wasn’t keen to walk back to the car for another. . DAY 12 Carter Park to Maupuia Walkway - 1.20km . Not gonna lie - I am SO looking forward to wrapping up the Miramar Peninsula. What began as a beautiful way to explore every nook and cranny of the coastline while picking up rubbish that had washed in, has turned into feeling like a maid for people that can’t be bothered to clean up their own crap. I look forward to getting back to the regular ol’ rubbish that has washed up! . The sheer amount of rubbish on this stretch was infuriating. Over 18kg in less than 1.5 km. And that was just what I could clean up - I also had to report two quite large dumpsites to the council that were too much for me to handle myself. I really hope they were able to find them and clean them up as they were just metres from the shoreline. One good storm and off it all goes into the harbour. . DAY 11 - Part 2 Shelly Bay to Carter Park - .79km . This stretch of coastline had several construction sites along it, which had ungodly amounts of litter on/near them. The amount of zipties that I picked up today 🤯 I very intentionally only cleaned up litter outside the bounds of the construction sites but I could see so much litter inside the fences. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to keep your workplace clean, especially this close to the water. It was quite unfortunate. . Along the beach portion of this stretch, it was back to washed up plastics. Nothing interesting to report, just vast quantities of soft plastics, #singleusecontainers, and a tarp. . DAY 11 - Part 1 Point Halswell Lighthouse to Mahanga Bay - 1.43km . Today’s clean was split into two parts as I had to go back and catch the section I missed last time. A lot of time walking the road since a good portion of this stretch has a seawall. But don’t let that trick you into thinking there wasn’t rubbish to be found! The mowers had been through this part already so there was chopped up litter all over the place again and it was another day of picking up a ridiculous amount of crap left behind from people fishing. . Where the sea wall dissipated, every little nook and cranny (AKA coastal shrub) was littered with single use drink containers. An obscene amount of recycling was collected separately to be added to my personal recycling this week. I had to do a little rock climbing to rescue a stray gum boot that somehow managed to escape its owner as well as to rescue a few mismatched shoes that washed up on a miniature beach without access. Thankfully there was a decent rock wall to climb up after jumping down! The little beach I cleaned a few days ago was a hot mess again so I gave it some love while I was there (clearly this beach could use some frequent attention). . DAY 10 Point Halswell Lighthouse to Shelly Bay - 1km . I don’t usually get frustrated/angry when I’m out beach cleaning but the amount of trash clearly left behind by fisher people really pissed me off today. There was so much fishing line, piles of disposable gloves, empty packaging from fishing gear and bait, empty single use beverage containers, #fastfoodtrash, and wipes. Freakin’ everywhere. I cannot wrap my head around polluting the shoreline and water that they are collecting food from. It really got to me today. Rant over. . I really put my yoga practice to work today climbing and balancing amongst the rocky shoreline. It was a bit of a workout! There were a few bits of this shoreline that were inaccessible because I couldn’t figure a way down to the shoreline so today’s cleanup included a fair amount of the grassy area lining the road, which they had just mowed. It was unfortunate to see some of the things that were hit with the lawn mower, chopped into bits and strewn all over the place. They would have been far easier to clean up prior. . In addition to all of the fishing crap tossed aside, I found my 2nd homemade bong of the coastline clean up, a huge foam piece that I’m assuming was from some type of buoy, and the packaging for some snorkeling equipment. I also rescued a safety cone from the water that I left near the road - it wasn’t there on my pass back through so I’m assuming the lawn care crew took it with them. . Grrr...got back to my car with an overflowing bag and realised that I missed a fairly decent stretch of coastline between today’s cleanup and the last one. I’ll have to add that on to the next trip, as I’m exhausted! Bouldering up and down rocky coastline with an awkward shaped 7+ kg bag of rubbish really took it out of me today! . 7.25 kg for today’s stretch #CleanTheWellyShoreline total - 42.69kg

DAY 9 Karaka Bay to Mahanga Bay - 2.16km . After battling the ferocious wind the previous day, last Thursday’s section from Karaka Bay to Mahanga bay was ah-mazing! It started out quite brisk but warmed into a gorgeous day that was perfectly calm and I had a gorgeous stretch of coastline before me. The first section was quite pristine - I wonder if the many residences along this stretch keep their coastline picked up. If so, well done! . Once the houses dwindled, the litter substantially increased. Fishing gear, single use drink containers, fast food trash, cigarette packages, and soft plastics galore. About a half km from Scorching Bay beach, I stumbled across some emergency tape on the ground and a gazillion pieces of smashed car all over the place. It took forever to clean up because everytime I looked at the area from a different angle, I could see new pieces. I’m sure I probably missed some! . Finished out the morning by cleaning the little beach in Mahange Bay that was once home to the NIWA Mahanga Bay Aquaculture Facility. The beach was quite loaded down with rubbish and clearly could use more frequent attention! I was fortunate enough to have two Pīwakawaka’s fly around me the whole time. DAY 8 Seaton Ferry Wharf to Karaka Bay - 1.61km . I so desperately wanted to get a section of the Welly coastline taken care of today so as soon as the rain looked like it was clearing up, I rugged up and headed across town. The whipping wind made for a tough stroll along the beach (complete with mouthfuls of sand - mmm...) but the coastline was so stunning and I found a little beach that was just completely covered in shells! So pretty! . All in all, it was fairly clean out there today, although there were a plethora of single use beverage containers tossed along the road. Notable finds were a very rusty, ginormous screwdriver, another snorkel (which will be cleaned and donated to the second hand shop), and a weird buoy of sorts. Untangling the rope from the 1 square meter chuck of seaweed was a full-body workout, especially in the howling wind, and ultimately, drove me to end the cleanup for the day. DAY 6 Moa Point Boat Ramp to Breaker Bay 2.82km . Today’s cleanup pushed my collective total over 1100kg (2425lbs)!! . Tackled a bit longer section this time since it was such a lovely day! Unlike some of the previous days that were primarily walking on beaches, today’s section was filled with all sorts of scrambling over a ton of big rocks. I’m going to be sore tonight! . I was so impressed with how clean this section began - other than a washed up vape, big empty water jug, and random shoe the first half was so clean! Unfortunately, once I got a little closer to Breaker Bay, the litter definitely picked up. Tons of discarded beer bottles, water bottles, and random bits and bobs. Found a strange smattering of clothing today - a little pair of kids gumboots and puffer jacket as well as a knitted poncho (pic 2). It felt like someone might come back looking for them so I left them on the trail marker heading up to Ataturk Memorial. . The sweetest couple stopped to ask if I was the lady from the newspaper that was cleaning the coastline. It felt so crazy to be recognised when out but it was so lovely to talk with them. They made my day! . Cut the day’s cleanup a little shorter than I had planned due to a dude hanging around the end of the beach without any pants on. 😳 Something just felt off so I figured I’d turn around and call it a day. DAY 5 End of Lyall Bay to Moa Point Boat Ramp 2.08km . Nothing like starting out the beach cleanup with a full wave to the face trying to rescue a large piece of polystyrene stuck in some rocks! 🤪 After drying myself off as best I could, I was off to enjoy a section of the coastline that is a little less used than where I’ve been cleaning thus far. . I think it’s so interesting how after cleaning beaches for a while, I can definitely tell (for the most part) what items have washed up and what has either been carelessly tossed or blown from a rubbish bin. The majority of the rubbish found washed up near the water was fishing related gear - ropes, fishing line, and not one, but 2, fillet knives (very rusty, not salvageable). The places where people congregate were littered with #fastfoodtrash, single use containers, and today, a big ol’ whisky bottle (I really hope that wasn’t consumed in one go!). . A one-off cleaning on my regular beach, Evans Bay, while being interviewed by RNZ (link in bio). . It was soft plastic for days today! Nearly everything I picked up today was the remnants of some type of food system-originated soft plastic. Finding all this soft plastic is really frustrating, especially since we’ve got a soft plastic recycling scheme here in New Zealand. This scheme is a breeze to partake in and it’s filling a vital gap. But let’s be real, as much as I wish it could, recycling alone won’t solve our plastic problem. DAY 4 The entirety of Lyall Bay 2.35km . Another day of enjoying this Welly Shoreline cleanup project with one of my kiddos! Such a perfect time to catch up on everything that’s going on in their worlds. Parenting hack - want to get your teenagers spillin’ the tea? Take them on a litter cleanup! 😜 . The beach itself was quite clean but the parking areas around were a disaster. So much takeaway/fast food rubbish, napkins, and single-use drink containers. Ugh! My daughter found a clothespin and improvised a litter picker for the nastiest of the napkins! The homemade bong was an interesting find amongst the rock wall. 😳 . To the handful of people that stopped to say thank you, or the man that started applauding when we walked in front of his car in the parking lot, thank you! Take pictures OF them (from a safe distance), but not WITH them. 🚯 Don't feed wild animals. Feeding them changes their natural behaviors and reduces their fear of humans. Their natural fear is a good thing and keeps them (and YOU) safe. Human food is also just not healthy for them. 🪺 Leave nests and baby animals alone. They might be cute, but you can endanger their survival if you go messing with them. DAY 3 Princess Bay Beach to the start of Lyall Bay Beach 1.80km . I was lucky enough to have one of my kiddos accompany me on this stretch today. And boy, was I thankful for his help as there was all sorts of nastiness out there today! Thankfully we found this used nappy before it exploded all of its little plastic bits all over. I’ve found several knife sheaths over the years but today I found the knife as well! The soggy old shoes in a plastic bag were a weird find. . The amount of rubbish really increased around the parking lot just outside of Waitaha Cove - fast food wrappers, vapes, wrappers from cooking in the parking lot... As the parking lot is frequently full of campervans, I’m going to guess a lot of this has been improperly discarded by people traveling through. We are nature reflecting on itself. 🪬 ________ I now embrace a slower way of living, one that nurtures both myself, others, & the environment. Most people are living a fast lifestyle of convenience, restricted freedoms, worrying about money, overworking. This is a low vibrational, stressful & unhappy way to live that breeds wastefulness & harms both ourselves, others 𝘢𝘯𝘥 the environment. When I was working full time in a job that drained me I was burnt out & barely had time for myself, it was miserable & I was yearning for a slower, healthier & more mindful way of life. I was able to create that by creating 𝘮𝘺 𝘰𝘸𝘯 economy as an entrepreneur in an eco-conscious & community lead online business. DAY 2 Island Bay Marine Center to Princess Bay Beach 1.99km . Day 2 in the books and another day with the entire coastline nearly to myself. Lots of scrambling over rocks today, with one little tumble (naturally while someone was watching - smh). While the majority of the rubbish were things that had washed up, you can definitely tell where people congregate as the amount of discarded fast food trash and drink containers increase immensely. . Golf balls were a weird find as there isn’t a golf course or driving range nearby. 🌎💚 Happy Earth Day 💙🌎 I’m missing my lilac tree back home in Jersey 🪻 My parents have sent me some photos of it blooming all of its glorious shades of purple, but I’m missing seeing that beautiful moment in person 💜 God must have heard my inner thoughts because I stumbled upon a lilac tree while walking in Wicker Park yesterday. Made me so happy 😊 My very own little piece of “home in the springtime” right here in Chicago.
