I know I'm supposed to not play favorites when other records might feel slighted or left out. I also know that saying this is the greatest live album for, The Grateful Dead, is also very controversial. Oh well... It's Saturday and I'm spinning my favorite album in my collection. Everyone who follows the Dead and their live shows know the three day stretch from May 7th - 9th, 1977, are quite possibly the greatest three nights in music history outside of Woodstock. From Boston to Cornell to Buffalo, the Dead were at their peak, performance wise and totally in sync with each other. Ask anyone except me and a handful of others and they will say Cornell is the best of the best. I beg to differ for two main reasons: 1. Opening up with Slipknot/Help Is On the Way/Franklin's Tower, is quite possibly the most epic start to any show. 2. The setlist is 🔥🔥. They played so many of their best songs, a few great covers, and the band is totally jamming out in the best possible way. ----- I was lucky enough to score this album from Pitchfork Records in Concord, NH. It just came in from someone trading it to the store. The owner said I could get it for $125 because I had about $100 more to vinyl to buy. I waffled in true, Joe, fashion. It was my wife that said I'd kick myself if I didn't get it. You know, she was right. It was also my first live Grateful Dead album I ever purchased. In Ariana Grande’s latest No. 1 smash, the emotions were as high as the notes she reached. But the message remains heartfelt. Heartbreak is universal. And to keep hoping can be fatal. Apart from bringing all the feels, We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For You Love) successfully and quickly turned around everyone’s perception of Grande’s new album. When Yes, And? opened to mixed reactions, a second single became critical to the overall impression of Eternal Sunshine. And her team couldn’t have picked a better single to save her latest era as this song brought everyone to agree that she’s still very much a force in pop music. Nowadays, sad songs are often expressed in cursive singing or monotonous tone to make it seem sadder than it is. But it only makes it bland, if not irritating to my ears. If only the other pop stars will take a page from Grande’s book, they’ll learn that you don’t always need to be so glum to be relatable. After all, song-making isn’t just about slapping vague words and cryptic phrases together. You need to sing it beautifully, and with your heart, for it to translate well into a melodious song.

I started college in San Antonio, but by the time Pac dropped this album, I had decided to move to Austin and change my major and outlook on life. I started hanging out with a bunch of film majors and watched indie and foreign movies at art house theaters and on bootleg DVDs and VHS tapes. I hung out at places like I Luv Video and Vulcan Video and really fell in love with movies. The cool thing about many of the friends I made going to school in Austin was that a lot of them were also huge hip-hop fans. We spent almost just as much time deciphering Pac's lyrics on this album as we did interpreting the latest Hong Kong action film. Rodrigo y Gabriela - Mettavolution (2019) - This album was my intro to Rod y Gab, it pretty much blew me away, especially their amaaaazing rendition of Pink Floyd’s Echoes. That year I jumped at the chance to see them in Saratoga at the Mountain Winery, an amaaaaazing show, we sat second row, but on the end which seemed closer to the stage than 1st row center (curved rows). Disasterpeace - It Follows OST From the second the movie started and heels started playing I was hooked and knew I was going to love this movie. The soundtrack is perfect, it’s dark, broody, makes you uneasy, and has a sort of otherworldly feel that fits the strange reality that doesn’t feel quite right that the movie takes place in. This is actually the soundtrack that got me into VGM as an adult because I loved what Diasterpeace did so much I played Hyper Light Drifter, and fell in love with that soundtrack too.

Today’s spin is the Dirty Heads - Sound of Change (2014) Sound of Change is the fourth studio album by the Dirty Heads. I picked this up the other day at @bruiserrecordsjax in Jacksonville, FL. Later this summer, Mrs VinylWithDad and I will be attending the Slighty Dirty Tour when it comes to @dailysplace. The tour features co-headliners the Dirty Heads and @slightlystoopid, with openers @commonkings and (our favorites) @theelovaters. I haven’t seen the Dirty Heads since 2012 when they played the Coliseum in Tallahassee, FL, so I’m long overdue. Like the rest of the line-up, they put on a fun show. We’re really looking forward to it. When I picked up Sound of Change the other day, I had never heard it before. Other than the first two albums by the Dirty Heads, I’m pretty clueless to their music. Sound of Change was interesting though. I was expecting more of a reggae-rock sound, but instead I heard mostly pop and hip hop. The reggae sound was there but only on a few tracks. We liked it though. We spun it over a few drinks last night, how the music was intended to be listen to.
