I often wonder how my students (will) remember me. Iβve seen enough students well after theyβve left my class to know that they do remember me and that itβs usually fondly & positively. But I still wonder if any specific memories stick out to them. Some remember something new they learned from me. Some remember gifts Iβve given them. Some remember family changes that happened when they were with me. Some just remember that I loved them. And some remember special experiences. At this point in my career, the years blur together and I donβt always remember what year I had which student. But recently a former student came into the principalβs office for help with something while I was there. She was accompanied by another staff member who asked if I had been her teacher. I replied that she had indeed been my student before and that she was in the class I taught when the pandemic hit. I donβt think Iβll ever forget who was in my class when the pandemic started and our lives were turned upside down. Teaching as I knew it forever changed. That year was rough. We. Went. Through. It. Then my former student said, βShe was my teacher before. She visited me at my home and met all my pet birds. I had 9 birds then.β I loved learning that my visit during the pandemic was a core memory for her, even four years later. It had been the last day of that school year, and I had driven all around NYC visiting each student I had that year. It was still June 2020, so the visits with each family were cautious, outside, masked, and short. But thatβs what she remembered most. And I love that.

I've always been one to be constantly chasing after the next big adventure, always looking ahead to the next destination on my bucket list. And while that drive has led me to incredible experiences and unforgettable memories, it's also left me feeling a bit unbalanced βοΈ at times. I've come to realise that true fulfilment doesn't just come from ticking off items on a travel checklist π or reaching lofty goals. It's about finding joy and contentment in the journey itself - the small moments of wonder and discovery along the way. So, as I continue to pursue my travel dreams, I'm learning to strike a balance between those big, extrinsically motivated goals and the intrinsic joy that comes from simply being present in the moment. Itβs a snow day! So grateful my school called it yesterday evening so we could all sleep in peacefully this morning. Snow days are still a magical thing (though now thereβs shoveling involved π), so I have lots of feels about schools that instead of giving kids the day off are opting to go remote. βοΈ Itβs an unnecessary burden on teachers who likely also may need to balance shoveling and taking care of their own kids; βοΈ It means those families who have no devices or only one device are forced to miss out or compromise in some way; and βοΈ It robs children of the magic of having a day to just go out and play in the snow or have a break. Just because you can doesnβt mean you should. It wasnβt an option 4 years ago and we all did just fine with the few snow days we had. Just my two cents. a former coworker, now friend, messaged me last week as she came across this class photo in one of the schools offices. I had these printed for my class back in December 2020- the year school pictures and class photos were not a thing. Not only does it bring back sooo many memories, Iβm also reminded how important it is to hold on to some of the things we did during shut down to continue to nurture our communities. Blue skies, yellow leaves β¦gorgeous winter day. Student assignments are all in. Iβve had such a fantastic bunch of students this term. Teaching has been a joy in a way that I havenβt experienced since the pandemic. Not to say there havenβt been challenges. Students experiencing anxiety and stress, and feeling overwhelmed and burnt out has come up again and again. But students are also so much more aware that the grind isnβt everything it is made out to be. They are so much more aware of mental health struggles and many are so open to seeking therapy. To acknowledge that you need help and guidance and not see that as shameful or a waste of time is such a big step. If anything we need more university resources for students seeking therapy and mentorship, wanting to deal with stress and procrastination, and striving for overall healthier work-life balance. #fall2023 #winter #pandemicteaching #academiclife #studentsuccess

This #dramateacher has been #summervacation-ing haaaardβ¦ And I still am, actually, with a late anniversary trip with my husband planned and a out-of-state conference Iβm attending next week! I used to spend a lot of my summers prepping for the year ahead. Then #Covid19 hit, and I began using my summers to just zone out and recuperate from teaching stress and focus on reconnecting with my loved ones, including my dearest friends. I feel like I could use an entire calendar year to maybe recuperate from #pandemicteaching and the challenges Iβve faced the last four years, but I do not have that kind of time. However, a bright spot: Iβve met my new drama teacher partner this week, and Iβm starting to get excited again. I feel he is a good fit for us, and I look forward to seeing how #WoodsideTheatre will grow from his contributions π₯° So Iβll soak up these last days of summer, and Iβll look at this school year as a fresh restart.

3 years ago (March 2020) we were all in the midst of Lockdowns, restrictions, mask wearing & Tiger King - all due to the unprecedented Coronavirus flung into our lives. The first lockdown was implemented across the UK in March 2020. The first coronavirus cases in the UK were reported in January 2020. By the end of March 2020, 4,426 people in the UK had died within 28 days of testing positive with Covid-19. On 16 March 2020, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the Government would be implementing measures intended to halt the spread of the virus. The first lockdown began in England on 23 March 2020. Similar measures were implemented in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland at the same time. The lockdown saw the closure of non-essential high street businesses, schools, indoor sports venues and other activities. People were advised to work from home where possible and to avoid public transport. The NHS also advised anyone aged 70 & over to stay at home as much as possible and to practise social distancing. The first/second/third lockdown resulted in the majority of children and young people being educated at home. My kids were off school and I remember the day I picked them up from school and telling them they won't be at school for a bit... What turned out to be a bit, turned out to be months! Which they were happy about to be fair. The Government announced a series of schemes intended to support people during the lockdown. This included a financial support package for businesses affected and a furlough scheme intended to help companies retain staff. It feels like yesterday but also feels like it was years ago - I don't know the full economic, mental health impact & other health outcomes for the past few years but from my experience I can say it changed our lives but we got lucky and I feel very fortunate we maintained our health. Sure, there were things the kids missed out on, for example, my daughter missed out entirely on year 5 & 6 then started at secondary school when schools opened, it was a massive change but during lockdowns we were blessed to be able to have Lockdown with my family so the kids & I had support. Years on I hope everyone is healing
SLEEP and REST are two different things. If you are clocking in some good hours of sleep, but feel exhausted, chances are, you might have a REST DEFICIT. Society has spent a lot of time discussing the importance of SLEEP in recovery and rightly so as sleep has multiple benefits for physical, cognitive, and emotional restoration. But, often getting more sleep doesnβt always seem to strip away the fatigue. If you want to shift from feeling exhausted to feeling energised, try building in a REST practice. Rest practices are regeneration activities that GIVE us energy. Here are some examples you can try: 1. Keep a notebook handy to jot down any nagging thoughts to create more mental space for focused thinking (as Matthew McConaughey said in Greenlights βI never wrote things down to remember; I always wrote things down so I could forget.") 2. Block time for intentional moments of sensory deprivation (e.g., Intentionally unplug to reduce sensory inputs, book a float in a sensory deprivation tank, engage in meditation) 3. Turn your workplace into a place of inspiration for creative rest (e.g., consider the role of biophilic design, beautiful artwork, or intentionally spending time with people who energise you) Do you already have a rest practice? Yet, as any teacher knows, the occupation goes far beyond simply teaching material but is intimately linked with emotions.β As we emerge from the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now more important than ever to support teachersβ emotional wellbeing to help prevent burnout. Things got a little hectic, this past week, and I was reminded about the βpandemic pauseβ and what a privilege it was to work with 9th graders from one of my former schools, to find ways to make the pause more enjoyable. We spent time journaling, discussing and connecting with social movements, hearing from teaching artists, and chatting with local activists. Special thanks to the team of teachers, artists, activists, and HS interns who helped make summer of 2020 a little less grim. A year ago, a group of friends and I were sharing our dream jobs, money no object. I said I would work at a nonprofit helping kids and families, where my personal life would be intertwined with my professional life. Where every single person could belong no matter their past. After this school year, I realized I am at my dream job. I try my best to let all the chicken nuggets know they are loved, seen, and heard, no matter their behaviors or grades. I walk alongside families when possible and do my best to support them. This past year was the toughest year yet, with severe deficits and challenging behaviors. However, it has been my favorite year. Being back in the classroom with 25 nine year olds. Knowing I was able to play such a small part in their tremendous emotional growth and academic growth. There are major flaws in the education system. Teachers are ignored, underpaid, and unvalued. There are non-teachers making laws about what teachers can and cannot teach. Not to mention, teachers and students have become expendable in political games. However, youβll still find me in the trenches fighting for our students and fellow educators. Fighting for equity, fighting for respect, and fighting to continue to make the world a kinder place. After all, the future is in my classroom. #pandemicteaching #tatralka #misstralkaschickennuggets
