This snare drum is one piece of steam-bent cherry and tulip snare drum. Cherry on top and bottom and a ply of tulip in the center are all glued together. This construction allows for less glue than is used on a multi-ply shell. In turn, it creates a more resonant drum shell. After doing some research, I found this definition of steam-bending wood: “Steam bending is a woodworking technique where wood is exposed to steam to make it pliable. Heat and moisture from steam can soften wood fibers enough to be bent and stretched, and when cooled down, they will hold their new shape.” The steam-bent shell is put into a mold to harden, and the two ends are glued together at a single point. This art of building delivers the least amount of glue needed in a single-ply shell to allow sonic frequencies to pass through the drum effortlessly. It’s such a fascinating building technique. Picking this bad boy up to put on the snare stand is a workout. 😂🥁🤓 But for real, I never thought how reassuring it would be to have such a heavy snare drum under my drumsticks. It gives you a sense of safety — knowing that you can play as hard or soft as you want, and it will deliver. It’s a new experience every time. The Black Beauty is one of the most recorded drums in history, and along with that, this snare drum is also a B-Stock. That means this shell could have been made in the ’70s and possibly wasn’t put together until the ‘80s. There is just no way of knowing, but it’s been fun learning about this drum and what it’s capable of doing. It’s a new experience every time. For me, and I know this will sound cliché, but the thing I love most about a snare is the relationships I have developed. I was obsessed with them for years, until I started hearing other engineers didn’t always them; relying on better / different OH mic techniques to capture hats. Is maintenance on a snare drum worth it or should you just buy a new snare? Why or why not? Snare Saturday: @rogersdrums 14” x 5” R-360 steel shell snare drum The majority of the time most of us will opt to just buy a new snare drum instead of putting in a little work and rebuilding a drum back to life. This process is not a simple one and requires a lot of patience and time to get a drum back into working condition! This snare drum is a perfect example of this. The hoops were not even round and it had no throw-off, butt, heads, or wires, and the shell looks messed up. But now, this is one of my favorite snare drums and has proven to be able to provide a wide range of sounds. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure if one is willing to put in the work to transform that junk treasure!! Fast forward to 2023, we've come a long way! Not only have we grown in the number of operating locations, but our show has grown tremendously as well. What do you know about the history of Premier Drum Corps.? Snare Saturday: 1976-77 Premier 14” x 5.5” Aluminum Snare Drum If you didn’t know, Premier was founded in 1922 when a professional drummer named Albert Della Porta forged, after some time working with the Boyle Drum Co., a partnership with its former production manager. The pair rented a basement on London’s Berwick Street. Soon after, they were joined by Albert’s sax-playing brother Fred, whereupon Albert became Premier’s first sales manager. However, in 2005, after 65 years of activity, Premier finally closed the factory. The entire site was eventually demolished in 2017. On June 21st, 2021, the company was revived by @gear4music purchasing the company and took it down a new journey. Time will only tell how it does!! Is there something I’m missing? Why are seamed bronze shells overshadowed by their seamless or cast bronze counterparts? Snare Saturday: Pearl BR-5514 Sensitone Custom Alloy 14” x 5.5” Bronze Snare Drum I will start by saying this is coming from someone it’s only ever heard a cast bronze snare drum, and I have played seamless. From what I’ve heard, the seamed and seamless tend to fair very closely together. Cast Bronze will be different because of its construction, but in a mix, you wouldn’t be able to tell, I guarantee it. Is there something I’m missing? What do you think the differences are, if there are any, between these drums? Less glue, how we hit it, construction, etc… Snare Saturday: @docsweeneydrums 14” x 6.5” Elm PURE steam-bent snare drum One way that you can make a snare drum most resonant is in the way that Doc Sweeney made this drum. This snare drum is one piece of steam-bent elm, and they mill out the center of the shell to then create the re-rings. That means the re-rings are a part of the shell and not glued. This construction allows for the least amount of glue used. In turn, it creates a more resonant drum shell.
