To know what a steam-bent shell is, you must know what steam bending is.
After doing some research, I found this definition of steam-bending wood:
“Steam bending is a woodworking technique where wood is exposed to steam to make it pliable. Heat and moisture from steam can soften wood fibers enough to be bent and stretched, and when cooled down, they will hold their new shape.”
The steam-bent shell is put into a mold to harden, and the two ends are glued together at a single point.
This art of building delivers the least amount of glue needed in a single-ply shell to allow sonic frequencies to pass through the drum effortlessly.
It’s such a fascinating building technique.
