UK Glass Art Collective Group Exhibition - March 2024 Coalville CAN @carla_harris_glass Take a look back at Carla's glass work 'Resilience' Professor Hawkins at the University of Reading first shared a climate stripes graphic in 2017, using coloured stripes to represent the global average temperature for each year since 1850. He used blue for the cooler temperatures and red for the hotter years. When I translated his graphic into glass, it gives a stark visual of how human action has contributed to a heating up of the climate over time. It made me think about the process of the kiln fusing is similar in that it takes the glass from a cold form and warms it gently, changing its composition over time until it reaches its top temperature, then it starts to cool again and settles in a new composition as a fully fused sheet. I wonder what will happen to the earth when it reaches its top temperature? As the quote which came from a tweet that filmmaker Shekhar Kaur made, 2021 for World Earth Day. Humans may not live to see the results. 'Metamorphosis' It seemed obvious when given the title 'Nature in Glass' to make flowers, but I am interested in the energy aspect of the title. Everything is energy and energy doesn't die. It morphs into something else. I love the fact that the sand becomes the glass and that it transitions under heat into handmade glass, blossoming into life as art through the flowers. I also love the fact that sand can transform the glass by sandblasting it to change its appearance to create beauty. One of nature's very own wonders. 'Mulch' I am very interested in the idea that energy never dies, it transforms into something else. Leaves are a symbol of the cycle of life and death - In this piece, the leaf falling from the tree ensures the tree's long-term survival. When it rots down and becomes mulch, it then helps the soil to retain moisture, protects it and helps rain penetrate it. This creates the opportunity of regrowth of new things again to create life. If you have not visited the exhibition yet, Let me tell you a little bit more about my pieces. 'Resilience' Professor Hawkins at the university of Reading first shared a climate stripes graphic in 2017, using coloured stripes to represent the global average temperature for each year since 1850. He used blue for the cooler temperatures and red for the hotter years. When I translated his graphic into glass, it gives a stark visual of how human action has contributed to a heating up of the climate over time. It made me think about the process of the kiln fusing is similar in that it takes the glass from a cold form and warms it gently, changing its composition over time until it reaches its top temperature, then it starts to cool again and settles in a new composition as a fully fused sheet. I wonder what will happen to the earth when it reaches its top temperature? As the quote which came from a tweet that filmmaker Shekhar Kaur made, 2021 for World Earth Day, Humans may not live to see the results. I orginally made the piece in 2019 in order to give it to dad for his christmas present. My dad is a supporter of extinction rebellion and I had seen the climate stripes in an article in the Guardian newspaper. I felt the piece as a whole was too big so I took a third off. This contemporary piece became his and you can see it up in its space at his house in the second photo. I ultimately knew the other piece had to be in this exhibition when I saw the quote from Shekhar Kaur around climate and nature. This piece is currently being exhibited at the Nature in Glass exhibition, Coalville Action Network, Leicestershire. I am pleased to share my exhibition pieces with you. There's been a lot of planning, designing, and creating happening behind the scenes in the last couple of months. To see it all come together is pure joy.
