People want public health care they can count on, wherever they call home in BC. But we’re facing challenges: communities are growing, people are aging and many doctors and nurses are retiring. We’re taking action so you and your loved ones can get the care you need, when and where you need it. • Opening more after-hour urgent and primary care clinics • Recruiting, training and retaining more doctors, nurses and health workers • Building more hospitals, clinics, cancer centres and care homes closer to home There's more work to do but it's starting to make a difference. 35 UPCCs have opened in BC since 2018 with more to come. We welcomed more than 700 family doctors and 6,300 nurses last year. And more people are getting health and cancer care they need faster and closer to home. gov.bc.ca/BuildingHealthCare #HealthCare #HealthCareServices #HealthCareBC #ProvinceOfBC #BritishColumbia #HealthCareProfessionals #UrgentCare

People in all parts of BC should have access to the health-care services they need. We're improving recruitment, training and retention options for physiotherapists, MRI technologists, pharmacists, and other allied health care and clinical support workers. These types of health care professionals often work in a team-based structure, so people can benefit from wraparound care. And these new actions to grow BC's health care workforce are working. 40,000 health workers have joined BC’s public health system since 2017. Bringing on more health workers is one of the many actions we’re taking to strengthen health care in every part of the province. “Health is a human right, not a privilege to be purchased.” - #ShirleyChisholm. Around the world, the right to #health of millions is increasingly coming under threat. Diseases and disasters loom large as causes of death and disability. Conflicts are devastating lives, causing death, pain, hunger, and psychological distress. The burning of fossil fuels is simultaneously driving the climate crisis and taking away our right to breathe clean air, with indoor and outdoor air pollution claiming a life every 5 seconds. The @who Council on the Economics of Health for All has found that at least 140 countries recognize health as a human right in their constitution. Yet countries are not passing and putting into practice laws to ensure their populations are entitled to access health services. This underpins that at least 4.5 billion people — more than half of the world’s population — were not fully covered by essential health services in 2021. To address these types of challenges, the theme for #WorldHealthDay2024 is #MyHealthMyRight to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, along with safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination. #WorldHealthDay

What is #ParkinsonsDisease? Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects parts of the brain that control movement. Brain cells located in the substantia nigra produce dopamine. When a person moves, dopamine is involved in producing coordinated movements. People who live with Parkinson’s Disease have unintended or uncontrollable movements which include shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Many people above 50 years of age are diagnosed with this disorder, but symptoms are also found at a much younger age (young onset). Since there is no cure, spreading awareness, early detection and treatment are key to slowing down, stopping, or changing #Parkinsons’ progression. @parkinsonsbc has all the information you need on how you can stay informed, get involved, and start conversations. #ParkinsonAwarenessMonth #ParkinsonAwarenessMonth2024 #WellnessWednesday 📸 : Carlos Torres

Other services will also see expansion: to help with bathing, meals, light housekeeping and rides to medical appointments. We're also expanding access to programs that promote physical activity and social connection. We know that it's often friends and family who are the primary support system for seniors in their lives. 💤 Sleep is crucial at any age, but it's especially vital for older adults. It helps recharge the body and mind, but many seniors struggle to get enough shut-eye. Factors like decreased melatonin levels and health issues can disrupt sleep. Yet, good sleep offers numerous benefits: 💤 Increased alertness during waking hours 💤 Enhanced memory and focus 💤 Reduced medication usage 💤 Reduced symptoms of depression, stress, and anxiety 💤 Improved vascular health 💤 Regulated appetite 💤 Reduced risk of falling 💤 Maintaining a happier and more engaged lifestyle Disrupted sleep in seniors often leads to them spending longer in bed or sleeping at intervals throughout the day, to catch up. Here are a few ways to encourage positive changes to help minimize disrupted sleep in older adults: 💤 Promote an active and regular daily routine that includes both physical and social activities 💤 Ensure the bedroom is dark and quiet at a comfortable temperature 💤 Encourage a well-balanced diet that is rich in protein and tryptophan 💤 Optimize melatonin levels by getting adequate sunlight 💤 Adhere to a regular sleep schedule by waking and going to bed at the same times each day 💤 Limit use of stimulants such as caffeine, sugar, or alcohol 💤 Practice a soothing routine before bedtime such as bathing or reading 📸 : @yanberthemy @ybt_img #worldsleepday Source: bit.ly/42ZTSgn

Studies show that almost 80% of seniors in Canada have good psychological health. However, Statistics Canada says that #anxiety and #depression among many older adults are usually overlooked. Seniors can cope better to prevent mental health problems by having strong social and psychological support. Nurses are a critical part of our health care system in BC. Their dedication helps people when they are most vulnerable. When nurse-to-patient ratios are imbalanced, the quality of care goes down. That’s why we’re taking action to create minimum ratios for acute care settings. This means better working conditions for nurses, better care for patients and shorter hospital stays. To meet these staffing ratios, we’re taking action to improve nurse recruitment and retention. New incentives will help to train new nurses, attract more experienced nurses and keep the ones we have. This approach to growing our workforce and improving patient care – a first in Canadian history – is one of the many actions we’re taking to strengthen healthcare. Clutter creeps up on all of us, and it is especially challenging for seniors due to the physical and cognitive changes that are happening as they age. A little help can go a long way when it comes to #independentliving. Here are a few ways you can help seniors keep their homes neat and organized: 🧹✨Make safety a priority. Getting rid of hazards is the first step. Items that seniors can trip on include newspapers, loose cords, and unsecured rugs. More importantly, repairing anything that is broken helps seniors get organized. 🧹✨Make a point to check the dates of items in the pantry and refrigerator to prevent them from getting sick and to keep the storage areas clean. 🧹✨Help them feel comfortable parting from extraneous belongings in their home so they can donate and downsize. 🧹✨Come up with ways to give old rooms and spaces a new purpose to prevent clutter from collecting. 🧹✨Set routines and schedules for the general upkeep of specific areas of the house. Not everything has to be done in one day. 🧹✨Consider hiring a monthly cleaning service for tasks that require more physical effort. 🧹✨Organize medications by dose and schedule, label each container or better, ask your pharmacist to have all medication blister-packed. 🧹✨Ensure that everyday and essential items are visible and within easy reach to simplify and make life easier to maintain. Are you a caregiver or someone who is helping an elderly loved one? If so, please feel free to share tips on how to help seniors stay organized and keep their homes clean in the comments section below. #aging #assistedliving #seniorliving

On Apr 4 2023 my GP sent me to ER for stomach pain / rapid weight loss. On Apr 6 2024 I finally get the CT scan she ordered to find out why. I’ve since produced an entire season of TV, lost nearly 40lb & normalized my body rejecting 40% of food input. (We renamed Chesterman Beach in Tofino "Upchuck Beach" on my behalf this weekend.) It’s so easy to pretend life is totally normal but the second I remove myself from the carefully crafted techniques I use to function at home everything goes sideways so fast. I had a great time this weekend, and it also showed me how much I’ve normalized and how much work and routine it requires to keep me feeling stable. A year of wondering what’s going on. A year of waiting and learning yet another strategy to function that would be most people’s complete chaos. HOW DID IT TAKE A YEAR????? But yeah, healthcare’s doing great… #bchealth #healthcarebc #canadianhealthcare

Everyone who wants to have a child should have the opportunity to do so. For some people, in-vitro fertilization is one of the few or only options. Starting April 1st, 2025, one cycle of IVF will be free in British Columbia. People who want to grow their family should be able to, regardless of their relationship status, who they love or how much money they make. This will help more people on the path to parenthood, and is just one of the actions we’re taking to grow accessible health care and bring down costs for people. Learn more: StrongerBC.gov.bc.ca/HealthCare 🫶🏼I know in 2008 this would’ve cost $40,000-50,000. Our health minister thinks that BC having the longest wait times for walk-in clinics 🏥👩‍⚕️ in Canada is an extraordinary progress. 🤦🏼‍♀️🫠 The new pay model certainly has merits for family practice 💰👨‍⚕️but the failure to see the immediate consequence of doctors leaving walking practice 👋🏻to get that increase in pay💲💵is sheer incompetence. 😒🥴🤬 🙋‍♀️It’s an obvious. and again fails to address the real reasons B.C. is short on doctors: 🚗👨‍⚕️💉🤐 mandates & c36, which is ripping HOLES in medical colleges as we speak 📣. While @adriandixbc bumbles 🤡🥸around with our healthcare, we are suffering more and more in BC. 🥺😢 We need competent management 🤓 and accountable leadership. 📋YESTERDAY. Imagine telling your boss that the reports 📄✏️showing your department was performing worse 📊📉than every department like yours in the country, despite spending more 💵, with worsening outcomes ❌ and then trying to say we’re making great progress, 👍🏻👍🏻and other divisions are looking up to yours. 👀😳🤯 #delulu PS don’t worry, he has a plan to fix this problem too… 📝we don’t know what it is because he doesn’t ever specify. I’m just wondering what problem will be created next? 🧐🧐 #bcpoli #bcpolitics #britishcolumbia #bccanada #healthcarebc #bchealth #bchealthcare #bchealthcarematters #bchealthcarecrisis #cancer #bccancer #cancercanada #healthcarecanada @coachdonovanjames @bchealthcarematters

#Epilepsy affects almost every aspect of the life of someone who is diagnosed with it. For many individuals living with epilepsy, the stigma associated with the disease is more challenging to cope with than the disease itself. The stigma can discourage people from seeking treatment and can impact social inclusion. We’re making progress expanding BC’s health care capacity. Since 2022, we’ve had an increase of more than 700 family doctors and nurse practitioners, and nearly 300,000 people have been connected with a primary care provider. Since October, hundreds of family physicians and nurse practitioners have said that they are able to take on new patients, and we’re working now to match people who need care with these care providers. There’s a lot of work still to do to help more people and we’ll keep taking action to attract new health care workers and keep the ones we have so more people in BC can be connected with a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Register today with the Health Connect Registry so we can get you connected to a primary care provider as they become available in your community: HealthLinkBC.ca/Health-Connect-Registry (link in bio) #HealthCareBC #ProvinceOfBC #BritishColumbia #HealthCareServices #HealthCareProfessionals #NPsOfferSolutions

It has been a relatively mild winter lately, and the Groundhog said that there are only 6 more weeks of winter left, but it’s important to recognize that older adults are especially susceptible to cold-related illness and injury. Seniors often lose body heat much faster compared to younger people and a chill can more easily turn into hypothermia or frostbite. Here are a few simple winter safety tips to help seniors stay safe for the rest of the cold months: ❄️ Dress appropriately for the weather (layers, waterproof and wind-resistant gear!) ❄️ Manage seasonal depression ❄️ Eat a well-balanced diet (Calcium and Vitamin D are key!) ❄️ Winterize your home ❄️ Stay safe on the road.
