A tribute to Zarina Patel 1935 - 2024. Zarina Patel was a pioneering Kenyan artist and a key member of the '70s - '80s Sisi kwa Sisi movement advocating for a National Art Gallery in Kenya. She actively supported art at the National Museums of Kenya, most recently participating in the Marejeo exhibition at Nairobi National Museum. A physiotherapist turned author, Zarina wrote extensively on South Asian history in Kenya and was the granddaughter of pioneer Alibhai Mulla Jeevanjee. She was credited with saving Jeevanjee Gardens from land grabbers. She was also the Managing Editor of AwaaZ magazine, co-founder of the SAMOSA Festival, and a dedicated human rights and environmental activist. ‘Who Holds The Reins Upon You’ 2m x 1.65m Oil and sand on canvas Recently a white horse appeared in my work and I wasn’t sure why. I had to really think why or where I’d seen or heard of them of late ….and I then recalled. Through family stories they had featured in my childhood and had been a big part of my own family history in Ireland. My mother used to recount tales of her favourite white horse “ Dolly” to us when we were little. How she lovingly cared for this horse who pulled their cart to market / church each week. In fact most farmers back then owned horses and my Uncle Simon in Wexford still actually breeds them. The white horse is often read as a powerful yet pure symbol across various cultures and contexts. Yet for me the appearance of the white horse in my latest work was quite unsettling. I saw its appearance almost as a spiritual sign- or a signifier of change. Which it is. Thank God. Finally I feel I’m emerging from a challenging period of grief in my personal life. Hence I believe to be why the subconscious brought a white horse to my work. I like to think of her now as a symbol of Peace and Freedom. Who holds the reins upon you … no one … we should all hold our own. There’s also another little anecdote that I wanted to share with you all about my connection with the horse world. Heard first hand through certain family members in Kerry ( aka Uncle Brendan).
