SNAKE FRUIT!!! Also known as “Salak”, they’re native to Indonesia. It gets the name from the scaly, brown skin that covers the fruit, which resembles a snake’s skin. Not gonna lie, I ate this every day during my trip to Indonesia. They taste crunchy and sweet. Check out the snake fruit tree - I have so much appreciation for people who harvest them! I haven’t found any in the US other than in Hawaii several years ago. Oh, one last thing! MANGOSTEEN!! About the size of a small apple, Mangosteen is rich in powerful antioxidants. They’re juicy and sweet with a touch of tartness. They have a leathery exterior, but when you open them, the inside is white and soft. I’ve found some here in the US but they’re not the same quality and are pricey. In my opinion, the best bet is trying to get them when you’re in Hawaii. As a side note, I grew up eating a lot of this fruit, but just recently learned that people in Asia drink Mangosteen tea to stay healthy. Some even said that it fights cancer! I tried the tea and ended buying some to bring home. What are you doing this Indigenous Peoples’ Day? . I got to Google-ing after getting gas at LakeSide Trading in Seneca Falls, owned by the Cayuga (Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’) Nation early this morning. . I grew up learning all about the Native American history of this area, but was long overdue for a refresher. . The Cayuga Nation are known as the People of the Great Swamp, for their traditional territory among the Finger Lakes. . In the 12th century, they united with the Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida and Mohawk Nations under the Great Law of Peace to form the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, to bring a sustainable peace among the Nations. . Until the Revolutionary War. . Although it remained neutral, the Cayuga Nation became the target of U.S. military attacks, and villages were destroyed and its orchards burned. . They were forced from their homeland and the land was dispersed in parcels to American soldiers. . A decade after the war, it appeared that the wrongful taking of Cayuga land would be made right. The Treaty of Canandaigua was signed by the US government, but never honored by state. . For 250 years, the Cayuga Nation unsuccessfully pursued its land claim against the State, and in the early 21st century finally took affirmative action to start reacquiring its land by simply purchasing it. . I’ll purchase my gas there from now on, even though it’s a bit of a trek, to support them in a (very) small way. . On another note, aaaaand because absolutely everything is connected, the Cayuga were also often referred to as the Pipe People for their use of clay found in the area to fashion pipes. . CLAY! . The Charles Bridge used to be called the Prague Bridge is a historic structure built around the 14th century, it used to serve as the only connection point between Old Town Prague and the Castle. This bridge has taken it's fair share of beating from wars fought on it, to floods and not to mention executions of past rebellions. But these days, it's much more peaceful, mainly packed with tourists. I really love the various elements of juxaposition in this photo. From one aspect are the orange trees of Seville against the backdrop of buildings (cultivated nature vs man-made structures). From another aspect, the historical architecture of the Cathedral 16th century against more modern 19th and 20th century buildings. To top it off, in the distance is a modern sky scraper tower that has caused controversy with the historic cultural tone of the city. From my travel to Turino, Italy. I went there for the white truffle festival in Alba to learn about the aromatic and delicious white truffle and of course to taste the "King of Wine" and "Queen of Wine" Barolo and Barbaresco of Italy. Unfortunately, 2 years ago was a really bad year for white truffles :-( It's too bad I couldn't get this night cityscape with the Italian Alps as the backdrop, it was somewhat of a cloudy day. But on a clear day, the alps just adds so much more majesty to this city.
