The 2023 Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo of the 2023 supernatural horror film Five Nights at Freddy's with three special features on all discs and Movies Anywhere digital download! I saw the movie in theaters back in early November 2023, it was great although audiences and fans liked it and has no respect with the critics who gave it bad reviews, the movie is based on a series of video games that began with the first one from 2014 which is a lot better, I never played the games except I saw gameplay videos because I don’t play straight up horror games and I only play action horror games like Left 4 Dead (my number one favorite video game) and Doom, the games has the ratings of E for Everyone to Teen for Teen while the film is rated PG-13 for scary things, violence, blood, and bad language! The games and the movie has elements of mystery, thriller, adventure, fantasy, action, and science fiction! Some people think it relates to Freddy Krueger of the supernatural slasher horror film series A Nightmare on Elm Street, but the Freddy in this is an animatronic teddy bear named Freddy Fazbear! There’s three relations to both Nightmare on Elm Street and FNAF: 1. Both Freddy’s has the same first name. 2. Both Freddy’s wear hats but Krueger has a wool fedora hat and Fazbear has a top hat. 3. Nightmares become real but in Nightmare on Elm Street its Krueger haunting teens dreams and in FNAF it’s supernatural ghost kids in the animatronics in the dreams of Michael "Mike" Schmidt at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place/Pizzeria! “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (2023) • Directed by Emma Tammi • Starring Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio, Elizabeth Lail, and Matthew Lillard • This will be my non-spoiler review. Sorry it’s out so late. Thoughts: I was surprised when seeing this film. I’ve been aware of the games but never took the time to sit down and watch them or read into the lore. That was changed after seeing this film. Negatives: Personally, I believe the film could have benefited from an R-rating. I understand, after seeing the film, that the games aren’t particularly gory, but based on the subject matter, I think it was needed. I also believe the film didn’t feature enough scary moments. The creepiness came in towards the end of the film but was short lived. After seeing and hearing the games, the games created a new way of doing horror, the monsters come to you versus you going towards the monsters. I think that’s element would have really benefited the movie more and the stress inducing atmosphere. Reliance on sounds and lightning! Lastly, Josh Hutcherson’s acting during certain scenes felt off or flat, but I can overlook it. I also felt Matthew Lillard was underutilized but I understand why. Positives: I really enjoyed some of the elements not originating from the game, like the dreams. It was a major element and felt like a version of the mini games seen in later FNAF games. The animatronics were really nice and incredibly cool. Obviously you need the star to be on point but they blew it out of the water. Lastly, I think it was a really good story, seeing the journey Mike has to go through. It was emotional and it was a roller coaster on top of the Nights at Freddy’s. It had been difficult getting and keeping a job for a while now, so Mike (Josh Hutcherson) was desperate enough to accept the security work at an old arcade store. It's known for its life-size performing puppets that were powered electrically but also for the four kids that disappeared there one night. Mike's sister, Abby (Piper Rubio) got to see the puppets one day when her baby-sitter didn't show up and that's how he discovered that they were technically alive and inhabited by the ghosts of the missing kids. But Mike wanted their help to find his little brother who went missing years ago, but it came at a price he was unwilling to pay. Will the puppets forcefully have their way or finally help Mike know the truth about his brother. Why have they been killing people and what isn't Officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) telling Mike. You'll have to watch and find out. This movie brings the quirks into a horror tale with unnecessary storylines here and there. It was shallow, and the writing a bit lazy when painting a picture of danger and intrigue. I did like the casting and performance, which wasn't bad, but slow mechanical bear killers was a hard sell for me. I also didn't buy the explanation of how they were controlled by their puppeteer at the end of the movie. It just didn't add up. It's a story about forgiveness and second chances that some viewers might find interesting, but I struggled to be excited by it. Disclaimer: I've never played the games, or read the books etc. I have very little knowledge of the lore before watching this. This sadly doesn't work for me. Too many plot lines and not enough scares. If this was aimed as a children's horror film it would be amazing, but it's not? So it falls flat and feels very weak in the horror genre. The police officer was annoying and the idea of why the children ended up in the animatronics doesn't make sense? Why only those 5? And not the hundreds before which includes his brother?
