Before the cleanup, the gallery area was cluttered with flyers, spider webs, bird droppings, and peeling paint. After getting approval from the local district office, the Suwon branch volunteers worked hard to clean it all up. Volunteer leader Nadoyeon praised the efforts, saying, "Cleaning under the bridge is tough, but you've done an amazing job!" Recently, our Atlanta, GA crew tackled a foaming agent spill out of a tote. Area Manager, Sydney Johnson, and Technicians arrived on scene and began by assessing the spill and donning the proper PPE. The crew decided to use a gravity feeding method to transfer the material out of the damaged tote. They bonded and grounded the totes then proceeded with the process. After the transfer was complete, they cut up the damaged tote using a Sawzall, disposing of the pieces into drums. I recently joined a cleanup activity at Trail 5 organized by @awarenesstoaction23 . Before starting our activity I explained the dos and don'ts of the national park to everyone. Integrity is doing the right things even when nobody is watching. 🌍✨ How I implement this virtue is by cleaning up plastic from the environment when I am going for a walk. 🚶♂️♻️ I often carry a bag or a backpack with me, and while I am walking, if I happen to see trash and am not in a hurry, I think to myself, I might as well pick it up. 🛍️🌲 Sometimes one can even get money for empty plastic bottles as well. 💰 But that is not the point of doing it. My point is that in a clean environment people will behave better, and therefore I love to contribute to this. I even see it as a personal mission. 🌱🌳 I hope I can inspire you to do the same. If everybody would do this (even just one piece of plastic per day), our world (and our ocean) would be a much better place. 🌊🌎 And, it's good for your health (including your mental health) as well! 🧠💪 So, behave green, my friends. Our Woodbridge crew has been crushing it! They were recently called to the scene of a 100-gallon diesel fuel release due to a tractor trailer accident with impact to a nearby creek. Our crew immediately assessed the situation and set up cones to protect the scene from traffic. The team worked with the NJDEP officer onsite to determine the best course of action and got to work. They put on their PPE which included flotation devices, conducted a safety meeting, and began spreading Sta-Dri over the affected asphalt area. Turning their attention to the impacted storm drain and water below, the crew deployed absorbent boom down the drain and then proceeded to the outlet area down by the creek. Our Woodbridge crew removed the contaminated absorbent pads placed by county Hazmat and began to clean out the outflow pipe. They then set boom across the creek and on the ground around the discharge area for the outflow pipe. The team has been maintaining the boom while waiting for permits to begin the remediation of the affected soil. On April 27 #Unitex participated in the 12th Annual Newburgh Community Cleanup. The annual event was organized by Safe Harbors of the Hudson, a mixed-use, non-profit housing and arts redevelopment organization. Volunteers picked up 11,900 pounds/5.95 tons of bulky non-putrescible waste, 19 small car tires, 3 small & 1 large electronic device. Unitex donated 500 pairs of heavy duty, puncture resistant gloves, used by the volunteers to do the clean up. May's First Call Focus is dedicated to our Accounting Manager, Kathryn Outhous. Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Kathryn attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accountancy. Before joining First Call, Kathryn was in public accounting as an auditor where she received her CPA license. As our Account Manager, Kathryn serves a huge part of what we do as a company on a day-to-day basis. She is involved heavily in the daily oversight and needs of the finance department to include support with cash management, bill pay, administering financial accounts, and much more. Kathryn is also responsible for preparing and managing monthly reconciliations that are vital to the accuracy of the monthly financial reporting. Kathryn oversees and works with our accounts receivable and accounts payable team to aid with any questions or issues that may arise. Eric Turner, our Corporate Controller, shares the following: “Upfront I knew how critical the creation of Kathryn’s position would be to our finance department, but even still she surpassed my expectations on how large of an impact she would make across the global footprint that is First Call Environmental and everything we have going on as well as how quickly she was able to make an impact. This month’s project spotlight is brought to you by our Chattanooga office. The job was run by Regional Manager, Marcus Conchran, and his team made up of Assistant Area Manager, Autumn Taylor, and technicians, James Howlett and Yorrick Johnson. This job involved a wrecked tanker containing Caprolactam – an organic compound used to make synthetic fibers, plastics, and resins. This tanker was a steam jacketed insulated liquid tanker and the product had to maintain a temperature above 85° to be pumped/transferred. Because of the wreck, this product had been cooled for so long that it was completely solid. It took four days of heating and monitoring by our crew to even begin the transfer process and one full day to get the tank spic and span. Jackson Creek is a vital yet abused little waterway through the city. A lot of trash ends up dumped in it. For the past seven years, @engageengineering has organized creek cleanups to add to the environmental health, subtract the trash, and reduce the pollutants that end up in Little Lake. This year, the Chamber crew, @ba_landscapearchitecture and @optimalhealthphysiotherapy pitched in to help, focussing on the area from Charlotte street to the greenspace south of Dalhousie. Armed with gloves, grabby sticks, trash bags and Joel Wiebe's fabulous waders, the team got this area clean and tidy. Was it a glamorous job? No. Was it hard work? Definitely. Was it important? AEG is a bioremediation company in Washington State that can be contracted to inject bacteria that eat petroleum products into contaminated soil. After a truck caught on fire and spilled diesel, impacting the roadway and soil, our Woodbridge, NJ crew was quick to respond to the call. They began by using granular sorbents to absorb the diesel on the road. They then shoveled all contaminated dirt and soil into 55-gallon drums for disposal. After closing off the drums, the crew strategically placed boom in order to prevent runoff from impacting nearby storm drains.
