A lot of times we think of peace as the absence of conflict. In your home, if there's no conflict is there always peace? No! Because sometimes there's tension. The lack of conflict is not peace. Peace is found in Jesus. "He himself is our peace." (Eph 2:14) The conflicts that rage within are solved by aligning with Jesus. The confusion that stirs with others is solved by agreeing with Jesus. The catastrophes that come with life are soothed by allowing Jesus to be our peace. Do you remember who you were without Jesus? Maybe you've been loving Jesus for a long long time, but can you remember a time when you didn't believe in Jesus? What was it like? There is a clear before and after. Remember where you were and see where Jesus has changed you. Eph 2:12 says, remember at that time you were seperate from Christ, excluded from (the Jewish community), without hope and without God in the world (Jesus). Can you imagine being without hope? Some of us know exactly what that is like. Hopeless people do desperate things. You all have had a period of hopelessness in your life. It can, but we are meant to be involved in our own situations. I had a professor one time say, "It takes two wings to fly, prayer and a program". You can pray all you want for certain situations to change, but until you get involved, until you do something about it, nothing's gonna change. You have to be involved. Not only that, but sometimes you will be the answer to someone else's prayers. God works through us, through humanity, to be involved with other people's lives. That's why we're in community with one another. Sometimes we are the prayer request for somebody else. You have to be involved. There's so much more to the Christian life than 'Let go & let God'. You may not be able to change the outcomes of every situation, but you can change the outcomes for most of the things you're praying for. We have to be involved! Pain is the body's way of telling you something is wrong. Something is wrong! God created us to live in a place he created for that purpose, where we could love God and be loved by him, but we messed up and had to leave (Genesis 2-3). Pain & suffering are a symptom of living somewhere we don't belong. God is neither the cause of pain & suffering, nor is he obligated to do away with it. But God is a redeeming God, and his way of redeeming all the pain & suffering that ever was or ever will be was to send his son Jesus to bear all of it, for us. Paul wrote most of the New Testament. He wrote these letters and sent them out... Have you ever wrote an email (or had a conversation), and thought after the fact that you'd probably change the words? Have you ever been ministering with someone or prayed with them and thought, 'Oh! I should've said it differently." Maybe Paul probably did that too, when he was writing 2/3's of the New Testament, at least once! And if he did, what would happen? Absolutely nothing. Because our faith is not determined by the reliability of a historical book, our faith is determined by the character and person of Jesus Christ, the son of God. We know him as doubting Thomas, but really he was Thomas with skepticism. It is a natural tendency to have questions. The religious leaders knew how to push Pilate’s buttons. They were trying anything to manipulate the situation. (Luke 23) How many of us – when we feel like we are losing ground, when the argument isn’t going our way, when fear has a hold of us– do we stir up the crowd in our attempt to hold on to power, to maintain some semblance of control? It’s a power play, and clearly it is the love of power, but Jesus gives us a different way, a third way, a new politic if you will…. The way of suffering. Jesus stood before these folks with seeming power, and he chose silence. Trusting that God would be his defender he chose to suffer as a pathway to healing and reconciliation. That’s counterintuitive, isn’t it? Why would he do that? We’d rather defend! I use words too much, I’ll just keep talking until I’m convincing you of what I need you to be convinced of, but Jesus didn’t use any words. At the time when you would think, ‘This is where the Sermon on the Mount should come! He should convince all the people in the courtroom, convince them all!’ But no, Jesus leads us a different way. He’s not blind and knows what he could say to set the record straight. The threat of Jesus as messiah increasingly created a clash with the political powers of the time, and no surprise that as followers of Jesus we struggle to align ourselves with the political and religious authorities of our day. Taking our cues from Isaiah 53 – messiah as suffering servant – Jesus’ “way of suffering” points to a different response, and just might answer questions we didn’t even know we were asking. Lord, we all have had denials at some point in our life. Times in which we've grown distant from your son, Jesus Christ. We've not followed him the way in which we should. We ask Lord, that you give us the means by which to come back to you. Give us the grace to see where you're working. Give us a rekindling of your awesome love and power that is available to us. We ask Lord that you continue to be patient with us when we don't see it, when we don't recognize that we have culpability in this. We haven't quite woken up to this understanding that we have responsibilities here and we've grown distant. So, Lord, identify those paths in our lives and in our hearts where we've grown distant, we've separated ourselves, and then help us to make up that lost ground, meet us in the middle, and bring us back to a warm rekindling fire. Most of the time I hate the word surrender. I like to feel in control, thank you very much. And yet, surrendering, letting go, being vulnerable, that is the absolute game changer, it is the gift of being human. With just a few words, Jesus invites us into a more vibrant existence, a truer experience of self. "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me: Not my will, but yours be done." {Luke 22: 42}. Jesus surrenders. Surrender is realizing that on this side of the Kingdom suffering, pain, and agony are the residual riches of being human. Surrender is strength, realizing that real breakthroughs happen when we are honest, real, and vulnerable with one another. Surrender is an acknowledging the complexities and the mystery that there is no way that I can truly understand everything I am going to experience on this side of heaven. And finally, surrender is trust. God, I trust you! I trust you, even when I don't understand it all. You’ve betrayed someone (at some point) in your life. You are human, you’ve done it. I’ve done it. But it doesn’t have to end the way it did for Judas. Forgiveness is real. Forgiveness is possible. Forgiveness can be granted. Trust can be built back up. Time can repair the wounds. I wish we could all be more like Jesus all the time, but the sad reality is that we all have some Judas in us. He sneaks up on us every now and then at certain times and in certain relationships. I urge you to identify where you’ve been Judas and perhaps make amends with those you have betrayed. How do we take the church out into the world around us? That's easy - invite someone to dinner. Start here, with people you know - or better yet - people you don't know. Invite your neighbors to dinner. Maybe you have family you only see once a year at the holidays, invite them to dinner. And after you've done that, don't stop! Cast your net wider. Go outside of your comfort zone. There are people in our communities that may not know anything about Christianity. Or they may think going to church means never having fun again, ever. In Luke 4, Jesus, the carpenter's son, wasn't accepted well in his hometown. It's hard to be accepted in your own hometown, but it says more of them than it does of you. So, Jesus ignores all of it and just walks away. What if you could do that? What if you could ignore the people who say, "You're still the person you used to be"? What if we could just ignore the people who say, "You can't"? What if you could just live in the confidence of who you are now. Redeemed. Changed. A new person. What if you, like Jesus, could walk in the power of the spirit. Walking through all of the conflict that's around you? Just walk right through it. What if you could walk out of the wilderness to the good thing God has for you, even though it may be a difficult thing to get through. What if you could just pass by the nay-sayers? What if you could have the confidence of the power of the spirit as the catalyst for the kingdom in your heart, and the kingdom that is out there waiting for you to build it. It will help you to not be limited by who you were. Jesus caused quite a stir in the synagogue in his hometown. He read some scriptures and then said that it was fulfilled in their hearing that day… and that really upset some people because they knew Jesus as a boy and had seen him grow up. They couldn’t conceive of Jesus being the Messiah- He was only a carpenter’s son! It's hard to do something special or unique in your hometown, people don’t see the new you, they only see the old you. But it takes a willingness to do hard things to overcome other people’s perceptions and expectations of you in order to do what God expects of you. You can do it! Do the hard things! What are the things that you are working through that make you feel like you can NOT live into your purpose? Nehemiah was a political prisoner taken away from Jerusalem at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians. When he heard about the state of his home city and how the walls around Jerusalem were destroyed, the scripture says that he, “Sat down and wept.” It was his passion to have a vibrant city, to protect his homeland and his people. How many of us search and search are search and search - looking for Jesus, but maybe we don't realize that is what we are looking for? We feel a longing for something, but that something is elusive, especially as we look in all the wrong places. We look for meaning and significance. We look for something to soothe us. We look for solutions to our problems. But, in all the wrong places. The stars can provide an explanation, but they cannot provide salvation. The Magi wanted more than what the stars could offer. As soon as the Magi saw Jesus, the one they had searched for, they recognized Him! Do you recognize Jesus when you are looking for Him? This is our final week of Focused: An Unlikely Advent, and this Sunday we are examining the mysterious magi from the east. These men are sometimes referred to as the Three Kings or Three Wise Men. Tradition holds that there were three, but only because they brought three gifts, there could have been more! These magi were likely of the Zoroastrian faith based in modern-day Iran. They had no business worshiping a Jewish baby born in occupied Israel, and yet, they followed the signs to the Savior. Most of the time, these days, Christians would exclude the magi from being able to worship the Savior. We might say they don’t have the right beliefs or the right behaviors. They wouldn’t fit in to the modern mold of Christian worship and so we might leave them out of the way. But the question should be asked: Who are we unintentionally excluding from Focusing on Jesus when we celebrate Christmas our way and only our way? See you this Sunday! There is a little bit of Herod in ALL of us. Jealousy. A thirst for power. I ask you today to look inside of yourself to see what qualities of Herod you have. You will find a place in your life where you have been jealous, you will find a place where you wanted power when you didn't deserve it. It is very important to do this, as the effects last for generations. How can you be redeemed if you cannot recognize the qualities inside of yourself that need redemption? Pride and power are not things we should chase after if our eyes are focused on the Lord. So, find that thing in your heart that makes you like Herod and give it to God now. King Herod is clearly the villain of the entire story, manipulating the magi out of jealousy, working to ensure his reign from all potential rivals - at the expense of the lives of babies. What do you pray for? Do you actually want your prayer to be heard? Do you want them to come true? Are they things that you really want? Do you pray for the real desires of your heart with perseverance? Do you pray for the same things for years? or do you give up? The angel Gabriel said to Zechariah, “... YOUR PRAYER HAS BEEN HEARD, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son; you will name him John. Joy and gladness will come to you, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord..." (Luke 1:13-15) They prayed for a lifetime! They've always wanted a child, and now in their old age, God answered their prayer! After years of heartfelt prayer, do WE continue to pray, or do we give up out of discouragement? or do we simply forget because it wasn't something we really desired? God, some of us may think that we've missed the opportunity, or now we're struggling with despair. We ask that you would crack through the darkness with just a glimmer of hope to bring us back into understanding that through YOU anything is possible. You are more than able. Lord, awaken our hearts. Help us to imagine what it would be like to be a people full of hope. We are patiently persevering and waiting. In Jesus name, amen. Being filled with the Holy Spirit isn’t a matter of asking for more of the Holy Spirit so that you get more, rather it is giving the Holy Spirit more of YOU so that eventually the Holy Spirit gets all of you. In order to give the Holy Spirit more of ourselves, we must give the world less. The thing that fills you is the thing that controls you. The question is... Who has control? The Holy Spirit or worldly things that you are attempting to fulfill you? You can’t be filled with both. There isn’t room. So how do we do this? - Reduce yourself of worldly things - Wait and pray for the Holy Spirit to fulfill you We need to surrender & let go of sin. Yield control of ourselves. Humble yourself. Trust god and bring ourselves into alignment with what God is doing. Then we just will and do according to his good pleasure. "Get up! Why have you fallen on your face?" (God) - Joshua 7:10 So, get up! Don't wallow in self-pity. There is time for mourning, there is time for wallowing, but there is also time to get up! Sometimes you need a hug, but sometimes you need a kick in the pants. Joshua wanted God to change His posture, but God told Joshua to change it himself. Get up! Let's clean up this mess and move forward. That's how we confront failure. We get up, confront the mess and then move forward. God never promised that it was impossible to fail. Sometimes we do. God gives us the will to choose our path, but God always provides options for victory. When you fail, you don't have to stay there. You have to make the difficult but necessary corrections. Sometimes our biggest hurdles just need a walk. Take a minute. Take an hour. Instead of going headfirst into a concrete wall, maybe you should just take a walk. Pray about it. Think about it. Sometimes the thing we find the hardest to overcome just needs a walk around it, to sort through it and allow God the time and space to do whatever He is going to do. Walk around your Jericho. But walk around it praying! Sometimes we just need to take a walk, and pray, and see if God knocks that wall down for us. Last week I was working with a someone, and she was in tears because she shared a couple of her low moments (stones) with me. Even though those moments were the absolute lowest of her life, and she would never ever want to live through them again - she wouldn't change a thing, because she is who she is now because of them, and she knows more about God now because THAT'S where she found God. That's where she found the goodness and graciousness of God through Jesus Christ because God has redeemed those low moments and made them something other than the low that they were. God has turned them into a strength for her because she knows the reality of the scripture - in my weakness God is made strong - at my lowest point that's when God showed up the biggest. When I could no longer be who I was, that's when God made me who He wanted me to be. Identify your stones.
