In March 2024, Tuskegee University unveiled a monument commemorating Henrietta Lacks and her contributions to the fight against polio. Just days later, submissions closed for the Henrietta Lacks Hometown Initiative’s contest to design a memorial in her native Halifax County, Virginia. It’s not surprising that Lacks, whose “immortal” HeLa cells were pivotal in developing treatments for diseases such as polio, HIV/AIDS, and COVID-19, continues to be honored more than 70 years after her death. But Lacks’ legacy is complicated due to the ethical concerns surrounding the use of her special cells. Lacks, who died of cancer at age 31 in 1951, was never aware that her cells led to significant medical advancements—or that they were taken without her consent. And even now, her strange case raises questions about the the morally dubious methods through which we achieved unquestionably positive breakthroughs in medicine. Though her cells live on in labs across the world, Henrietta Lacks’ life was short and full of challenges, and she remained largely unrecognized during her lifetime. It wasn’t until author Rebecca Skloot investigated the origins of the famous HeLa cells that Lacks’ story gained widespread attention with the bestselling 2010 book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Thanks to Skloot and the descendants of Lacks, who have worked to retell her story through initiatives like HeLa100, we now know more about the life of the woman often referred to as “the mother of modern medicine.” www.popularmechanics.com #iclonedna #twitter #cloning #dna #clones #elonmusk #crispr #tvnews #news #media #reporter #broadcasting #journalism #tvnewslife #journalist #reporterlife #breakingnews #newslife #broadcastnews #reporters #broadcastjournalism #dnaday #press #skynews #henrietta #henriettalacks #hela #helacells #theimmortallifeofhenriettalacks

#Bilirsinizmi? Hər il dünyanın bir çox ölkələrində Beynəlxalq DNT Günü (DNA Day) genetika elminin mühümlüyünü vurğulamaq, bu sahədə elmi nailiyyətləri təşviq etmək məqsədi ilə qeyd olunur. 1953-cü ilin bu günü “Nature” jurnalında tanınmış alimlər – Ceyms Uotson və Frensis Krikin Moris Uilkins və Rozalin Franklinlə birlikdə molekulun quruluşuna dair apardıqları tədqiqatların nəticələrini dərc ediblər. 50 ildən sonra, 25 aprel 2003-cü il tarixində insan genomu şifrəsinin açılması layihəsinin başa çatmaq üzrə olduğu elan edilib. Lakin genomun bəzi hissələrinin əlavə təhlili hələ də başa çatmayıb. İnsan genlərinin strukturunun müəyyənləşdirilməsi – səhiyyənin inkişafında mühüm addımdır. #AzərbaycanElmvəTəhsilNazirliyi #ARTİ #Azərbaycanməktəbijurnalı100 #azerbaijanjournalofeducationalstudies #steam #təhsil #education #DNADay #yeniməktəb #müəlliməkömək

The threat, we are told here this weekend, is existential, biological, epoch-defining. Economies will fail, civilizations will fall, and it will all happen because people aren’t having enough babies. “The entire global financial system, the value of your money, and every asset you might buy with money is defined by leverage, which means its value depends on growth,” Kevin Dolan, a 37-year-old father of six from Virginia, tells the crowd that has gathered to hear him speak. “Every country in the developed world and most countries in the developing world face long-term population decline at a level that makes growth impossible to maintain,” Dolan says, “which means we are sitting on the bubble of all bubbles.” Despite this grim prognosis, the mood is optimistic. It’s early December, a few weeks before Christmas, and the hundred-odd people who have flocked to Austin for the first Natal Conference are here to come up with solutions. Though relatively small, as conferences go, NatalCon has attracted attendees who are almost intensely dedicated to the cause of raising the U.S. birth rate. The broader natalist movement has been gaining momentum lately in conservative circles — where anxieties over falling birth rates have converged with fears of rising immigration — and counts Elon Musk, who has nearly a dozen children, and Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán among its proponents. Natalism is often about more than raising birth rates, though that is certainly one of its aims; for many in the room, the ultimate goal is a total social overhaul, a culture in which child-rearing is paramount. www.politico.com #iclonedna #twitter #cloning #dna #human #elonmusk #crispr #instagram #tvnews #news #media #reporter #broadcasting #broadcast #tvshow #journalism #tvnewslife #journalist #newstv #reporterlife #breakingnews #newslife #dnafamily #broadcastnews #reporters #photojournalism #broadcastjournalism #dnaday #press #skynews

Better late than never! Yesterday was national DNA day, and while we believe that this magnificent macromolecule deserves to be appreciated every day, here are some fun facts about DNA! 🥳🧬 • All humans share about 99.9% of their DNA • Red blood cells do not contain any DNA (this actually allows them to carry oxygen more efficiently!) • DNA is made up of a string of “letters” or chemical substituents known as bases, they are known as adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine • If you unravel all the DNA contained in your body and lined them up end to end, it would stretch all the way to the sun and back about 600 times! • DNA is the building block of life: all living things have DNA What’s your favourite fact about this glorious molecule? #gc #genetics #genes #dna #geneticcounselors #geneticcounselling #genechat #genetic #dnaday
