While in Santiago last week, people kept telling me to check out Cristián Izquierdo Lehmann’s houses, and all of the ones he took us to, including the ones on Alcántara Street (images 1-3, 2019), a purported carbon-zero mixed use office and residential complex under construction (image 4), and a row of town houses near by (images 5-8), embodied a carefully considered, thoughtful sense of habitation. ⠀ ⠀ Shared areas allowed for easy community building between neighbors, partially open to the street, and quick access to private spaces when one wants to retreat. When we visited the town houses, children from the different houses were playing together while the adults caught up on a long bench that spanned the property - as if demonstrating the desired usage of the shared space.⠀ ⠀ Later that evening, I learned that Cristián was a close reader of Serge Chermayeff and Christopher Alexander’s 1963 book, Community and Privacy: Toward a New Architecture of Humanism.
