One of the most important pieces of project based learning is making our products PUBLIC! 📣 Ms. Loretta was awarded a grant from @wholekidsfoundation + @thebeecause this last fall.. and thanks to this partnership, we have welcomed BEES into our garden! The bee barrier isn’t built yet, but will be soon. In the meantime, students are learning and prepping for bee safety and awareness as we welcome our new friends to the garden! 🐝 👉🏽 It is a very small hive right now and will be growing as the queen continues to lay eggs. They are Italian bees, which tend to be calm, and they’re known foragers who go look for pollen and nectar! Ms. Loretta has been taking beekeeping classes, and has been reading up on beekeeping to have more knowledge herself. She’s also in close contact with expert beekeepers here in Phoenix, who will be guiding the program and checking on the bees around every 10 days for the health of the bees and hives. School letter grades are out.. and PIA has been rated an "A" school! 🥳 At PIA, our mission is to provide students with a high-quality education in an emotionally supportive environment; one where they can apply their learning to real-world problems and learn what they are ready for based on their personal needs. While we recognize that state testing provides an essential piece of data, we have never been a test-driven school, instead preferring to focus on student needs and doing everything we can to meet them. Remember that advisory that was exploring the question “What does it mean to belong?” They’ve been talking about all of the things that make them who they are - from their favorite things, to personality traits, to their family background - they started to explore how WHO THEY ARE contributes to the way they interact with others. To explore this idea further, they creatively displayed all the things that make them who they are and presented it to the group! It’s HARD to get up in front of your peers and present your work, especially when that work is super meaningful to you! We love that this group of 2nd and 3rd graders boldly stood up and explained what’s important to them and all of the many things that make them WHO THEY ARE. This advisory has been exploring the question: “What does it mean to belong?” Today, they read Avocado Asks - a story about an avocado who can’t figure out where it fits in. Students paired up to share how they thought Avocado must have been feeling. It turns out, many of us have felt just like Avocado — unsure about who we are or where we fit in. By the end of the story, Avocado figured out that it doesn’t really matter WHAT he is, what matters is that he is whole, accepted, and loved just for being himself.
