All kinds of nests!🐦 To end our focus on garden birds we looked at the different types of nests that birds around the world create. We explored a variety of natural nesting materials and worked together to make nesting stations to hang in our trees. The children enjoyed using salt dough to mould nest shapes and to decorate their nests with feathers, wool, straw and other materials that they collected at Forest school. It was a great test of our fine motor skills - moulding and manipulating the dough and using tweezers to pick up the materials. 🕊We have loved taking part in lots of bird watching over the last few weeks and lots of the children have begun to notice and identify birds they see flying over and landing in our garden. Wassailing at Kindergarten! 🍏 As part of an old English tradition, last week at Forest School we celebrated the end of the festive season (Twelfth Night) with Wassail festivities! ⭐ Wassailing was traditionally used to 'wake up' fruit trees from their winter slumber to ensure a good harvest for the following season and involved singing, dancing and merrymaking! We loved being loud and noisy with pots, pans and sticks from our mud kitchen near our two plum trees. We tapped the tree trunks and sang 'Wake Up Plum Tree'. The end of a wassail typically features the sharing of a warm, spiced drink so we followed this tradition and ended our forest school session with a warm, spicy apple drink. On such a frosty morning it certainly helped to warm us up! Kindergarten experimented with lots of the different spices I used to make our wassail using the pestle and mortar and began to fill up cups and pass them to their friends saying 'Would anyone like some wassail?' or 'Wassail for sale!'. Here's a poem we recited during the week: Plum tree 🌲 I love thee From your leaves to your roots 🍃 Please this year Give us fruit! The Festivities began in Lewisham last night with mulled wine and the sounds of Christmas! 🎅🎁 Bellingham Green's 'Carols on the Green', celebration with with 5 local schools and 2 churches, was a great success. Led by the Speaker of Lewisham Council and Civic Mayor Cllr Tauseef Anwar and attended by several local ward councillors. Bonkers for conkers! Over the last few weeks we have been learning to safely use palm drills to make holes in conkers. Use used a glove for our holding hand and a conker clamp to keep us safe. Everyone showed such determination and perseverance when using the tool and it was fantastic to see how proud of themselves the children were when they managed to drill right through! It was a great demonstration of their motor skills and concentration. Champions! 🎉🎉🎉 . Hooray! The Phoenix Academy is double award-winning. The course won Best Training Scheme at this year’s 24housing Awards. And it didn't stop there, Marie Porter, the course leader, has also been recognised for her leadership of the academy for the last five years, winning Outstanding Contribution at the Federation of Awarding Bodies Awards. Marie said: “The last few years have been an amazing journey, which has seen the academy develop into what it is today: award-winning and making a real difference to people’s lives. I’ve so enjoyed working with our amazing community and I’m looking forward to seeing it develop to continue to meet people’s needs.” The academy runs courses for our residents, those of other housing providers and housing professionals, with 180 now having gained a qualification and a better understanding of the history, values and importance of social housing.
