People float in and out of our lives, whether minutes spent together or years. We meet by chance, and others, it seems, for a reason. I met SO many incredible individuals while on my Somerset to Cornwall walk. Each one added support to my day (practical or just by stopping to chat), social opportunities, colour, and vibrancy. ☆ Even the most introverted of us (that's me included) need contact with other humans at some point. It helps to keep us mentally healthy. Ollie proved to be the icing on the cake and a fitting way to finish my adventure. ☆ As my train pulled into Crewkerne station, I saw a large group of people on the platform with a guy taking a selfie. I heard raucous goodbyes and shrieks of friendship as the doors closed behind me and the train pulled out. I knew my lovely neighbour, Keith, would be waiting for me, so looking like a lost backpacker, I pootled my way into the car park, waved at Keith,and headed towards his car. ☆ As I reached Keith, a cheery, wild-haired, colourful guy approached and asked me if I'd been walking a long way. I told him I had and shared about my adventure to Cornwall. He introduced himself and said he'd been to a wedding and was seeing his friends off. He took a selfie of them all on his new Polaroid camera, but it didn't work. By then, the train doors opened, and they'd had to leave. I told him I had footage of the moment on my GoPro. Astounded, he asked if he could contact me in a few week's time to have a clip of it. Of course I agreed! ☆ Ollie, an actor, was just going off to walk a section of the South West Coast Path. He told us with enthusiasm about his plan to take a Polaroid of everyone he meets along the way, and give them the photo to keep. Nice touch! ☆ When Ollie heard me mention Keith's name, he started to laugh and asked us to wait a moment. He ferreted around in his van and surfaced, holding a 1920s stuffed toy monkey. He told us all sorts of funny tales that involved his mascot, but none funnier than the fact its name was also, Keith. We had to have a selfie now. I did the deed on my phone, but just as we said our goodbyes and were about to leave, Ollie remembered his Polaroid... Tada! 📷

"Sometimes you need to get lost to find yourself." Well, I definitely got lost today. 5.5 hour SOLO hike, 12km, and 673 elevation. I fell numerous times (almost slid off the mountain...again🫣), have bruises all over my 🍑, can barely feel my legs, and my feet are killing me. I also managed to get myself lost for a solid 20-30mins, thankfully some people helped me out and also encouraged me to climb a freaking rock wall! After all that, I managed to summit the ridge, and it was STUNNING! I am so happy I am not scared to do things alone. I would have missed out on so many amazing experiences if I let that fear stop me, including the one today. I may have been alone out there, but so many people on that mountain were friendly, helpful, and encouraging. Day 9 Walking from Somerset to Cornwall - Heading Home. ☆ I've had much to process since landing back home, and clean forgot to post about my final day... the day after my birthday. The day I travelled home. ☆ There were options. I could have turned around and walked home again. I could have called numerous friends in Cornwall or North Devon to head to theirs. But it was only about a five - or six miles walk to the train station to catch a train home. Deep down, I felt ready to go home. No more socialising. I needed time to rest, to think, to sleep, and to write down more of my thoughts about this adventure. ☆ I needed a debrief with me. ☆ I woke after a good night's sleep at Karen and Fernley's. The Old Washroom annexe had been so comfortable, and I enjoyed an hour of sitting in the window, jotting more notes in my journal about last night's incredible Saltlines performance. ☆ The sounds stayed with me. How do these musicians create such sublime notes? They entered through my chest, and, well, they never left. Mesmerised. The whole show had me utterly mesmerised. Sitting, watching breathing in the tempo of each strike, stroke, strum, and squeeze, Gigspanner transported me right back to the path. ☆ Inside my head, I heard the whispered memory of our little band of walkers, 'C'mon you Coasters,' as every so often the spoken words of Raynor Winn pealed through the caverns. She set the tone for each scene. She made us think, she questioned, she masterfully manipulated mood in the empty spaces between the musicality. Raynor enabled us to begin the coastal experience. She identified colours and smells and opened the floodgate for the riot of music to share exquisite songs, thunderous tunes, and healing melodies. ☆ All the musicians were incredible but Hannah's voice. Wow. Her range is wide. She sings with delicacy, clarity, and depth. She feels every note... and so did her audience. ☆ I add a note to finish my thoughts later on. In writing, I've been swept right back into the performance that carried me to the coast. Back to where it all began. I'm guessing that's a common theme for many coastal walkers. It tends to be life changing, in some way or another. 👇

Course 28 Tongyeong-si, Gyeongnam-do (13.9km) 26.3.24 Due to logistics, today I jumped forward to course 28 and walked it in reverse. It was at this point in Tongyeong that I recognised the value of flexibility in following the courses and the benefit of adapting the sequence of trails to mould my own path. The morning began tracing the outline of Ganguan Port which regularly hosts open air performances and has docked replicas of Joseon navy turtle ships. Shortly I was passing the industrial port area containing plenty of characterful workshops of varying sizes and applications. I quite enjoyed the educational art decorating a coastal wave protection wall depicting 통영전통전술신호연 (Tongyeong traditional tactical signal kites). Kites have long been used mainly in war as a means of measuring distance, communicating, and signaling. The kites from here are especially renowned for being larger, sturdier and more colourful than other regions. Tongyeong is dubbed ‘The Land of Sea’ and it’s easy to see why with its deep maritime history throughout the city. However, the highlight of the day and a place that had been highly anticipated on this trip was the Tongyeong Ogwangdae Conservation Society. ‘Ogwangdae’ translates roughly to ‘five clowns’ and is a traditional mask performance with folk music accompaniment presented in five acts using a mix of human and mythological characters to deliver moral lessons and depict class division and struggle within society. This unique regional fable combines solo and group dance, physical slapstick humour, dialogue, singing and a distinctive feature of call and response between performers and musicians. Here I met the incredibleKim Kei Eob who is a multi instrumentalist and coordinator and was given a tour of the facilities and a chance to try the Korean hourglass drum called 장구 (janggu). I was generously invited to join for lunch and made a new friend Yang Jeong-min who is so kind and a talented traditional musician and teacher. Die letzten Tage auf Madeira sind angebrochen. Nach einem entspannten Rest Day gestern bin ich jetzt voller Energie und bereit für vier weitere Tage voller spannender Wanderungen, beeindruckender Aussichtspunkte und unvergesslicher Highlights. Heute möchte ich euch noch einige Fotos von meiner letzten Levada-Wanderung zeigen. Zugegeben, das erste Drittel der Wanderung war nicht besonders abwechslungsreich, aber am Ende habe ich verstanden, warum diese Tour so beliebt ist. Üppiges Grün 🌿, ein beeindruckender Wasserfall 🌊, mehrere spannende Tunnel 🌌 und spektakuläre Ausblicke 🏞️ auf die schöne Bergwelt Madeiras machen diese Tour zu einem absoluten Muss auf der Insel. Die Levada do Caldeirão Verde befindet sich in der malerischen Region Santana im Norden von Madeira. Sie ist eine der beliebtesten Wanderungen auf der Insel und bietet herrliche Naturschönheiten und vielfältige Erlebnisse. Facts: • Höhenmeter 🏔️: 53 Meter • Länge ↔️: 13 Kilometer • Gehzeit 🕒: 3,5 Stunden reine Gehzeit • Startpunkt 🚗: Die Wanderung beginnt und endet beim Parkplatz in Queimadas, wo sich auch ein charmantes Café befindet – perfekt für eine Pause nach der Tour. I found this hiking route on Instagram and it didn’t disappoint! Buachaille Etive Beag (The wee Buachaille) is often overlooked in favour of its more illustrious neighbour, Buachaille Etive Mòr. It is, however, a MAGNIFICENT ridge in its own right, offering superlative views down Loch Etive and of the surrounding peaks of Glencoe. I parked in Lairig Eilde Car Park, from where there’s a well-constructed (but quite steep) rocky path to the bealach, then a fairly straightforward, rocky ridge between the 2 summits. A good hour long 3 mile hike will bring you to the famous 7 lagoons in the north Portuguese national park known as Penada Gerês. When I pulled in the car near the starting point, some hikers told me not to bother as it was too foggy to appreciate the views. I was after driving a good two hours so the fog wasn’t gonna stop me stretching the legs. Though a popular hike, I had the whole place to myself and when the fog cleared, I knew it was a sign I needed to get into the cold water and offer a little gratitude. One of the more spiritual moments of my trip to Spain and Portugal.
