We went to #afanmasts today to bag #trigpoint 81. It was a 6 mile round route up the fire tracks to the top. Lots of mountain bikers which Morys isnβt bothered by, no livestock. At the trig at the top we met Roxy a beautiful German Shepherd who was a delight. Stopped for lunch and Morys took a nap over looking the steel works, a fabulous view. Came down the dark side of the hill which is Welsh rainforest and a completely different atmosphere. πClach Glas Back in my favourite place yesterday for a day out with a weather forecast dreams are made of. Clach Glas to BlΓ Bheinn traverse has been on @harrisonconniemountaineering and Iβs to do list for a while and the weather meant a day trip to Skye from Inverness yesterday to get on it. Quieter than the main ridge, this gave a day of dry, warm gabbro and quality scrambling. Tricky route finding at points as itβs not such a well travelled route, but we got there eventually with only one wee wrong turn that was realised fairly quickly. Mega steep drops, sharp arΓͺtes and amazing chimneys and a new Munro for me at the summit of BlΓ Bheinn. 10/10 day out and well and truly filled my cup to get me through a weekend of work βοΈ π§ββοΈ Munro #188

A return visit to Glen Affric after a 29 year gap. Back in 1995 the group stayed at Cannich but the hotel there has migrated from "run down" to "knocked down", so this time we were based at Drumnadrochit on Loch Ness. Hotel WiFi code: "Monster!" With extra driving, being twice as old as we were last time, and not being willing to miss our dinner (as we did in 1995), we didn't have time to revisit 5 summits and concentrated on the big two - Carn Eige and Mam Sodhail - the highest mountains north of the Great Glen. The weather was wonderful but the path up the glen was boggy underfoot - another delaying factor. The views north to Torridon ( #5) were super and it was nice to look down on Loch Mullardoch ( #6) where I camped in 2010 to visit the more westerly Affric hills. Sgurr na Ciche stood out in Knoydart and Skye was visible, until it disappeared into the haze. The long descent of the ridge to Sgurr na Lapaich ( #7) and the walk past Affric Lodge ( #9), through remnants of the Caledonian pine forest ( #10) made for a relaxed end to an excellent day on the hills. Extreme skinny dippingβ¦. Up early to avoid the builders, so was lucky enough to get this picturesque spot all to myself! The walk in itself was magical; across lush meadows and then rough moorland, before dropping to this delightful packhorse bridge. And all the while I was serenaded by the mournful cry of the curlew, and the crazy whooping of the lapwings. A grey wagtail joined me for my dip, flashing her yellow belly and wagging her tail. I got dressed in the fleeting sunshine feeling remarkably calm, and indecently happy to be alive. What a day yesterday for Norman to complete his full house with a trip up Pinnacle ridge and finishing on Bhastiers tooth. Atmospheric Conditions and a social ridge gave for a memorable day. Norman's natural progression in scrambling and climbing showed yesterday, making light work of the rock. I have always stated I'm no bagger, I love the hills and I'll walk up the same one over and over again but listening to Norman's tale of 40 years worth of walking has made me think again. "Sunrise or sunset?" π I looked at @adventurequeenmother as we walked on the beach, golden rays dancing above us. "You know that's a hard question! I like them both, but if I had to choose..." "And you do!" Sue grinned at me. "It would be sunset. Because it's more accessible to people. Because the light hits differently, you get better colours. And because if I'm watching the sunset, it's normally because I'm having a great time outside in a beautiful place, and I love the feeling of closure that it gives me on a day. It just makes everything better." (Scroll π for a behind the scenes with Sue π) 𧑠As the sun sets on #MentalHealthAwareness week, this year's theme of 'movement' is something I have always felt strongly about. I often get asked or it's commented upon how I 'do so much', in terms of different outdoor activities and adventures. In reality a lot of that is down to my mental health. Movement - and especially prolonged, repetitive movement in the outdoors - is the only thing I've truly found which helps quieten the neurodivergent noise. The truth is though, I probably wouldn't be here and do what I do and have the experiences I have had without it. π€« Movement gives so many people freedom they wouldn't have otherwise, and the positive physical effects it has on us are widely known. Sue and I chatted about how wonderful cycling is for people for example, and I love that I have met so many incredible beings (like her!) through - and because of - movement in the outdoors. We are all connected through it, and for me, it forges bonds with an understanding of each other on a deeper level. Because I know what it feels like. Because I've been there. And because we are in this together. πͺ Movement for mental health is one of the key reasons I have since moved to Scotland. Being here inspires me to move in nature more. Chasing sunsets is a habit for me now. For route 3 of National Walking Month, I'm recommending the short walk to Stony Cove Pike with big views down to Windermere and less than 3km from the car park. π€© π Stony Cove Pike >> swipe for map π Start at the car park at the top of Kirkstone Pass Reminder: check Kirkstone Pass is open because it goes through phases of being closed while they work on the road πΆββοΈ The route is 3km each way - cross the road and follow the path. There's a little scrambly bit along the way. π This is a perfect hike for if you're short on time or just want to do something extra π β°οΈ This is a great area to explore and Stony Cove Pike can easily be added onto other routes. I'm a bit late posting this bluebell walk and tbh I've struggled to choose between the several I've done recently. I meant to post last week but was distracted by the aurora, I stick to three posts a week otherwise I can't keep up! I've posted this one just because it was exceptional in the variety and profusion of flowers along the way. It is a familiar short walk that I do each spring. Just 4 miles to Riffa Woods, this time I varied the route because I wasn't sure if I could cross a ford as it was, it was fine. Anyway, on a warm but dull day I set off from St Mary's Church, Stainburn. There is a tiny lay by by the church reached by navigating a narrow single track road. There is only room for two cars. The historic church is open every day and worth a peep with its Norman arch, windows and font. The graveyard was surrounded by cherry and hawthorn blossom and full of bluebell and stitchwort. I love passing familiar landmarks including old carved gateposts along the boundaries of the fields. Who knows how old they must be, from the days when farmers would secure the boundary with a wooden post? Maybe they are as old or older than the church? Did you know there is a #fencepostfriday? Personally the posts in pics 4 and 5 are just the best. Am I sad or what? π€£ Riffa Woods was full of bluebells. There was also stitchwort, wild garlic, unfurling fronds of bracken and a few remaining wood anemone. One day I'll take the grandchildren here and pop a little something in the fairy houses (pic 7 ) the night before. Wouldn't that be magical for them?
