40 Munros to go… 🥲⛰️ The end is getting closer. I’ve got 40 Munros left on my round, which I plan to do in 13 separate hill days. Beinn Dearg is on the featureless end of the spectrum, but I still had fun. I cycled in from Old Bridge of Tilt on my mountain bike, which I had just fixed up after an extended break. It’s so nice to have full suspension and big tyres again. I remain unconvinced by gravel bikes… I took a brisk hike up to the summit and ran down pretty quick. It’s so fun getting into a flow state on a rocky (but not too technical) descent. The cycle back to the van was a blast. Downhill almost all the way, and I topped out at 35.6mph. So much fun. ✅ 242. The incredible Cathedral of St. Andrews with its glorious view of the North Sea. The largest church ever built in Scotland. It was built in 1158 and fell into disuse in the 16th century when Catholicism was outlawed in Scotland. It's a ruin now but a glorious and haunting one with its attached cemetery. My first t-shirt and short cycle of the year! The weather was gorgeous for the 30 mile 5 hour cycle! I was hoping to reach Luss but had to turn back just after Duck Bay. Due it turning cloudy and forecast for rain in the evening. But had a few stops at Clydebank, Bowling beach, Dumbarton, Balloch and then Duck Bay. I’ve never seen a train so busy with bikes before with little bike storage. Something happened to the train line so had to change at Dalmuir. I followed a group of other cyclists who rushed to the other platform to catch another train. Luckily, I was only in the cold rain for about 10 secs and that’s when a rainbow appeared just in front of us. Just didn’t fancy waiting for a train or cycle back to Glasgow with only t-shirt and shorts. So I’m glad I managed to catch it just on time. The National Wallace Monument, Stirling. The monument is a 67-metre (220 ft) sandstone tower and was built in the Victorian Gothic style 1869. Visitors climb the 246 step spiral staircase to the viewing gallery inside the monument’s crown. The view from the top is stunning. The tower stands on the Abbey Craig, the hill from which Wallace was said to have watched the gathering of the army of King Edward I of England, just before the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. On top of the spectacular scenery you get on the Meall a' Bhùiridh/Creise route, I was treated to even more views when visiting a Corbett called Beinn Mhic Chasgaig. Within 5 mins on the descent of the 3609ft Creise, I found myself walking alongside amazing scenery!! On the left hand side was the beautiful Aonach Mor ridge (pic 2) and on the right I was walking by the side of Buachaille Etive Mòr (pic 3) with distant hazy mountainous terrain in front (pic 4)!! Lochleven Castle Lochleven is linked to many colourful events and famous characters – royal visitors and royal prisoners alike. But the island stronghold is best known as the place where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner for almost a year. Some who took the boat across Loch Leven came of their own free will, including Robert the Bruce in 1313 and 1323. Others were imprisoned within the castle walls – such as Robert Stewart in 1369, two years before his coronation as Robert II. Mary Queen of Scots first visited Lochleven in 1561 as a guest of its owner, Sir William Douglas. Her last stay, in 1567–8, was as his prisoner. The tall tower house that dominates the castle ruins is one of Scotland’s oldest, built in the 1300s. Its original entrance (later closed) is 5m above ground level, giving direct access to the lord’s hall on the second floor. A fear of flooding may have led to this unusual layout. Inside, the kitchen and service areas are on the bottom two floors, with the living space above. During Mary’s time here, the floor above the hall served as her prison. A window was converted into a tiny oratory (chapel) for her private use. Voici l'abribus le plus insolite d'Ecosse ! 🏴 En 1996, un jeune garçon de 6 ans, Bobby Macauley, roulait tous les jours en vélo jusqu’à l'abri situé sur Unst, dans les Shetlands, pour prendre le bus qui l’emmenait vers l’école. Sur cette île où la météo est loin d’être clémente au quotidien, le vieil abri en béton était pour lui et ses deux amis un refuge bienvenu qui en plus lui permettait de retrouver son vélo au sec une fois les cours finis. 🚌 Mais les autorités locales ayant décrété que cet abribus était devenu vétuste et dangereux le démolirent en 1996. Déçu par cette décision, Bobby rédigea une lettre adressée au journal local. Emu par la lettre du jeune garçon, le journal lança une pétition pour qu’un nouvel abribus soit construit et que Bobby puisse de nouveau être au sec quelques instants avant d’aller à l’école. Un nouvel abribus moderne fut installé peu après devant l’émoi suscité auprès des locaux par la demande de Bobby. Dans les mois qui suivirent, des objets firent mystérieusement leur apparition dans cet endroit pourtant anonyme. Un fauteuil, une table, un tapis, un téléphone… Petit à petit l’abribus de Bobby devenait un endroit poétique et magique, une sorte de cabane perdue sur le bord d’une route des Shetland qui attira rapidement les regards des médias. I took this shot a couple of years ago on a trip #glenetive and #LochEtive at the very end of the road. It was a beautiful crisp winters evening, and the sunsetting sun was starting to drop behind the trees, but as we were driving along I saw the dusky light hit the dirty telephone box and defuse in such a way, that the entire ☎️ box illuminate like a storm lamp. I slammed on the brakes and reversed the car. I was able to get this shot which only lasted about three minutes before the light fell below the horizon. If you ever do travel to Glen Etive you’ll see this telephone box on the right hand side, a couple of miles out from the Loch. Sometimes getting a great shot is more luck than design.
