While the main building of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston was completed in 1909, that did not mean construction was over. With investment from Maria Evans (Maria Antoinette Hunt) as a tribute to her late husband Robert Dawson Evans after his death in 1909, planning and construction of the Evans Wing began in 1911. The wing would feature paintings, prints, and drawings. It opened in 1915, exceeding its initial estimated budget by twice the amount and increasing the size of the museum by 40 percent. Today we celebrate the birthday, life and legacy of William Brice (1921-2008) with an image from our archive: artists William Brice and Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) in Kyoto, Japan, 1987. 📷 William (Bill) Brice and Richard (Dick) Diebenkorn were introduced to each other in 1957 through the actor and art collector Vincent Price. This meeting proved to be a fortuitous encounter that led to an abiding and vital friendship. After the meeting in 1957, Bill and Dick's families became close. Following the Diebenkorns' move to the Bay Area, they would travel between Los Angeles and Northern California to see each other and traveled internationally together to Mexico and Japan. The occasion for the pictured 1987 trip to Kyoto was the Crown Point Press Woodblock Program. Bill and Dick were accompanied on this adventure by their wives Shirley Brice and Phyllis Diebenkorn. A description of this historic program can be accessed by finding this post in our linkin.bio. — Currently on view through 11 May at L.A. Louver are etchings by Richard Diebenkorn created with Crown Point Press. #ImageOfTheWeek: This wonderful photograph of the future Riverside Park is part of a group of nitrate film negatives that were recently donated to Historic Saranac Lake. Nitrate film was used from the 1890s to the 1950s, but it is extremely flammable! Nitrate film has even been known to combust when stored in improper conditions, and caused many fires in movie theaters throughout the years. Various “safety films” replaced nitrate beginning in the 1930s, and nitrate was almost completely out of use by the 1960s. For the safety of our collections and buildings, we often scan nitrate negatives and dispose of the originals through hazardous waste disposal methods. This scanning work is now being done in-house through a generous grant from the Pomeroy Foundation, and support from individual donors. Thank you to everyone who made this possible! This postcard is a printed lithograph card that shows a beautiful scene of the south end of Otisco Lake, and the old bridge that used to cross the lake. In 1868, the State of New York built a dam at the outlet of Otisco Lake in Marietta. This dam flooded a road/footpath across the lake which saved a long 8 mile trip around the southern tip of the lake. The state had promised to rebuild the road, and paid landowners for their now flooded land. For decades though, no effort was made to rebuild the road until an assemblyman brought this concern to the state. The road was rebuilt in 1900 using hemlock logs, across the lake as a causeway. In 1908, the dam in Marietta was raised another 4 feet and the causeway had to built even higher, which was finished in 1911. During this reconstruction, in 1909 tragically an Italian immigrant was working building the causeway when a one ton boulder came crashing down the hill from a Spafford quarry, crushing and killing him instantly. The road was later deteriorating and damaged by storms which produced gales on Otisco Lake. The lake was closed to traffic in 1929 and had fell into complete disrepair, and was almost non existent after 50 years. In 1931, assemblyman Horace M. Stone introduced a bill to rebuild the causeway. It was passed in the state senate but blocked by Governor Roosevelt (FDR), saying the county or water authority should handle it. Residents in 1934 were very upset at the closure of the road and blamed the state and Syracuse water authority. In 1982, tests by the USGS and State of New York found that the deterioration of the causeway was causing large amounts of silt and mud to pollute the lake. The state invested $300,000 to rebuild the causeway. Today the causeway exists but not as a road or trail. The postcard reads “Hello! I am having a fine time. I arrived safe and cousin Charlie and Bob both met me. Love Rachel” The postcard was sent to Mrs. Lyon of Smyrna, NY and was postmarked in Amber NY in 1920. I am sadly unable to find anything out about this woman.

Jane Allen Campbell, born in Montclair, New Jersey on 25 June 1865 married in 1897 to Carlo Bourbon del Monte, 4th Prince di San Faustino, Marquis del Monte Santa Maria. They had a son and a daughter. She was unconventional and followed her own rules; challenging the social norms of her time. Of her husband, she wrote, "I sometimes marvel how two persons unlike as Carlo and myself ever fell in love and how I was able to love him to his death despite all our quarrels." He died the 25th of May 1917 and she wore deep mourning for the next 20 years (as pictured here). In 1929, she received one the highest honours for a woman in Italian society, the Red Cross Gold Medal, for her charitable work with children who had tuberculosis. #ImageOfTheWeek: The solar eclipse is less than a week away! We're looking back at eclipse history in Saranac Lake in honor of the day, and found a unique photograph in the HSL collection. This picture was taken by a patient at Trudeau Sanatorium on January 24, 1925. It shows the view of the partial solar eclipse taken from the sanatorium's Main Building. A newspaper clipping from the time says the eclipse covered almost 90% of the sun, and locals used "darkened bits of glass and old camera plates and films," to view the spectacle.* We can't wait! [Historic Saranac Lake Collection, 2021.4.14.75. Happy Easter! On this holy day I thought I’d share a 1908 postcard that was sent from Skaneateles NY to Marietta NY for Easter. The postcard features two chicks floating in the water. The postcard reads “Here’s another postal for your album. You must come over with Hoyt and help me set hens. -Edith” The postcard was postmarked in both Skaneateles NY and Marietta NY on April 10, 1908. The postcard was sent to Homer Ackles. Homer H. Ackles was born in 1904 to parents William Harvey Ackles and Nettie Smith Ackles. Homer was a longtime apple farmer in the area. Homer was a lifelong resident of Rose Hill. He attended Skaneateles High School, and would board in the village during the week due to the long distance from Rose Hill. He graduated from Cornell University with a two year agriculture degree. He later married Iva Hilton in 1925, and they moved into a house on Rose Hill. He operated a grain and dairy farm as well as an apple orchard on his property. Homer was a 50 year member of the Borodino Grange, as well as a member, deacon, and elder of the Skaneateles Presbyterian Church. Homer was a singer at many churches. The man named Hoyt mentioned in the postcard was Homer’s brother who was born in 1901 and died 1993. Homer Ackles operated his apple orchard with his brother Hoyt. The farm had been in the family since 1840, where his great grandfather Ovid Ackles had farmed the land. The apple orchard was called Ackles Apples, and served the whole rural region. Iva Ackles had taught in many one room schoolhouses throughout the rural area. He was known in the community as a farmer and musician. He had been farming for 70 years of his life. Homer and his wife were known to be extremely social people. Homer was known to never get upset at anything. As a boy and young man, Homer would travel to Mills Seed House on Rose Hill by horse and buggy. The booming business was owned by the family of his second cousin Eleanor Mills Grinnell. After the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s property purchase in 1899, construction on the Huntington Avenue site started in April of 1907, headed by a Boston architect Guy Lowell. Lowell had a vision of a Greco-Roman style building crafted from marble and granite that was representative of the art it had collected. Due to limited funds, the building would have to be constructed in stages, making it a plan that would have to think of the future of the museum. The building opened in November of 1909. Check out this neat 1880s envelope that I recently acquired from Marcellus NY. While not as interesting as old postcards, historic photos, or artifacts, envelopes still give a fascinating look into the towns history and the way people used to communicate on the daily. This envelope was postmarked here in Marcellus. The postmaster at the time was possibly Thomas Decoudres who was postmaster in 1881. It is hard to say exactly, however it looks to be postmarked in 1883. The envelope was sent to John Patterson Maclean, of Morrison Illinois. John was born March 12, 1847 to parents James Clark Maclean and Rachel Dearth Maclean in Franklin Ohio. He was an author of several notable works of Scottish History, including that of his ancestors. Maclean also wrote several books on archaeology and religion. He was a priest and studied at the St. Lawrence Seminary in Canton, NY in 1867, becoming qualified for ministry in 1869. Maclean then received his Ph.D. In 1894. He preached in several states but especially his home state of Ohio until 1906. He also specialized on the history of the Shakers religious group. Maclean first married Helen Cleveland in 1872 and had several children with her. The two split up, and John married Addie May in 1914. John Patterson Maclean died August 12, 1939 at age 92 in Greenville Ohio and was buried in Woodhill Cemetery in Franklin Ohio. I’m unaware as to who sent this envelope from Marcellus, and why they sent the envelope. #envelope #oldenvelope #nypostcard #newyork #syracuse #1890s #1900s #author #historicimages #historicpostcards #illinois #syracuseny #ministry #whitesidecounty #1898 #stamp #marcellus #postoffice #emphemera #marcellusny #scotland #scottish #macleanfamily #johnmaclean #maclean #johnpatterson #morrison #morrisonil #history

This is a beautiful postcard of Spafford Inn which was a summer hotel / boarding house on the east shore of Skaneateles Lake in Spafford. It was a popular summer resort that many from around the area vacationed at for weeks at a time. The Spafford inn was known to be open as early as the 1890s. The Spafford Inn was described as “A splendid place to spend vacation. Bathing, boating, fishing, and other sports. Excellent meals. Terms reasonable.” In advertisements in 1912. In 1905, the Inn was under the management of Mr. Burns. In 1910, Adelbert Corl and Henry Hull were running the hotel. In 1911, Mr. and Mrs. Frank T. Robinson were owners of the Spafford Inn. In 1914, Mrs R. C. Scott ran the hotel. In the summer of 1915, W. R. Miller began running the hotel. As you can see, there were many different owners through the years. A man by the name of Ray Jenks stayed in the inn during winters to care for the building. Boarders were able to travel to the inn by steamer boats, or by horse and buggies. Picnics were often held on the grounds of the Spafford Inn. Tennis courts were built on the premises at some point in the 1910s. The inn was only open during summers and typically opened around June 1, and closed around October 1st. It is unsure as to when exactly the Spafford Inn permanently closed. The postcard reads ”Dear Carrie, I will write just a line to let you know where I am. I am down to Spafford Inn where I worked last summer, am going to work here. So when you write, direct to Spafford Inn, Skaneateles Lake NY. I will write a letter in a day or two, as ever, Cara.” The postcard was postmarked in Skaneateles NY on July 16, 1912. It was sent to Mrs. Carrie Dillenbeck of 611 1/2 Hickory Street of Syracuse NY. Carrie Dillenbeck married Willard Fremont Dillenbeck on September 14, 1910 in Syracuse. The couple had no children. Carried died on December 15, 1967. She is buried with her husband in Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse.

The saying “behind every good man there stands a woman” could certainly be applied to Marguerite Pettet, W.R. Coe’s longtime secretary who went on to become a Trustee, Vice President, and Treasurer in the early days of Planting Fields Foundation. Her devotion to the Coe’s began in 1922 at the age of twenty, over the next 56 years she managed the Coe’s finances and oversaw the transition of the estate from private to public. “He had faith in me and gave me freedom to act which pleased me greatly as the years went by and my responsibilities increased.”-Marguerite Pettet on W.R. #ImageOfTheWeek: We are often asked how patients paid for their tuberculosis treatment, which brings up the story of another amazing woman in Saranac Lake history! Mary Prescott was an heiress from Massachusetts who came to cure in 1895. After curing, she stayed in Saranac Lake and made it her mission to help poor patients in need of treatment. Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau advised her in this work, and in 1905, she opened the Reception Hospital at the end of Franklin Avenue. Today is International Women’s Day – it is only right that we feature Natalie Mai, the Coe’s only daughter! Natalie was a modern woman with her bobbed hair and old Hollywood glamour, but here she harkens back to the 18th century, dressed in a Versailles inspired formal dress or Court costume for a costume ball given by the Italian Embassy in Washington. "Women Detectives? Why Not?" Protest outside of the Roundhouse, the former Philadelphia Police Department headquarters. The protestors are walking in a wide circle on the cement terrace in front of the building. The protestors are primarily women and dressed casually in jeans, sneakers, and autumn jackets. They carry signs demanding that the police hire more female detectives. Sample signs include, "Women Detectives? Why Not?" and "Hire Philadelphia Women Detectives." The shot is composed so that the protestor line enters the frame at the right and proceeds towards the photographer, exiting the shot at the left. The cement walls and windows of the Roundhouse dominate the background. c. 1975-1985 Photo by Neil Benson. #Philadelphia #PhiladelphiaHistory #PhilaHistory #protest #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #PhiladelphiaPolice #NeilBensonCollection #NeilBenson #AtwaterKentCollection #AtwaterKentCollectionatDrexel #DrexelCollections #Drexel #historicimages

This is an incredible 1950s-60s era postcard of the St. Francis Xavier Church in Marcellus, this postcard is special to me as I have attended this church my whole life. Historical records indicate that religious services for the Marcellus Catholic population began in about 1849. Services were held in the home of John McNally, an irish immigrant living on Rockwell Road. There were about 10 people in attendance and most of whom were from Ireland. In 1854, twenty Irish immigrants from the hills and falls banded together and organized a congregation, naming it after the missionary Saint Francis Xavier. On the site of the current church sat a tavern built by Deacon Rice. It was a popular stopping place between Syracuse and Auburn. On the second floor, the Catholic group began holding services. In 1867 funding for the building of a church began. In 1868, the tavern was torn down and the present Catholic church was built. The membership has grown from about 20 to over 2000 people at present. The St. Francis Hall was built in 1924. Sources: John P. This is a view of the bucket line from the quarry to the stone crusher at the hamlet of Split Rock. Many Marcellus locals are very familiar with the story of Split Rock, and have spent many days exploring the area. Split Rock is a small somewhat abandoned hamlet northwest of Marcellus, near the hamlet of Howlett Hill. A limestone quarry was established by Gilbert Coons in 1834 in the area. In 1880, the Solvay Process Company bought the quarry and delivered limestone from the quarry to the main factory with a 2 mile long bucket line (seen here). The quarry was abandoned in 1912, three years after this postcard was used. The quarry was reopened in 1915 during World War II, Split Rock became the site of a munitions factory. The plant employed about 2500 people. In July 2, 1918, a grim disaster struck, a fire began in a motor after overhearing, and rapidly spread through the main factory building, firefighting efforts were tampered by a lack of water pressure. The fire eventually catastrophically reached an area of 3 tons of TNT, leading to a massive explosion, which was heard for miles in every direction, with a large shock wave as well. 50+ factory workers were killed in the blast, with more missing and never found. Today, the site has become overgrown and has been taken back over by wilderness. The area still has many ruins leftover, including the infamous crusher, which has tunnels running underground that are still accessible to explore. #1900s #marcellusny #marcellus #historicphotos #oldpostcards #postcards #nypostcard #newyork #syracuse #splitrock #1910s #splitrockny #bucketline #historicimages #historicpostcards #handcolored #syracuseny #splitrockquarry #haunted #Dwightsmith #CarrieRitter #1909 #blackandwhitephotography #disaster #explosion #stonecrusher #munitionsplant
