27/04/1961 - 27/04/2024 Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the explosion of the RFA Bedenham. The RFA Bedenham was a naval armament carrier. It had arrived in Gibraltar on 24 April 1951 and on the morning of 27 April, exactly 70 years ago, was unloading depth charges at Gun Wharf to a lighter (a shallow-draft boat or barge used in the unloading of larger ships). A depth charge ignited while in the process of being unloaded. This caused a fire and an explosion in the lighter which then spread to the Bedenham itself. Brave attempts to contain the fire proved to no avail and the Bedenham too exploded violently. The explosion rocked Gibraltar. Its force was such that parts of the vessel were blown out of the water onto the actual quayside and elsewhere. The explosion killed 13 people, injured hundreds and caused extensive damage to property. Windows shattered all over Gibraltar and the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the Convent were particularly badly affected. “The explosion of the Bedenham was a before and after moment for that generation of Gibraltarians. Everyone could remember where they were and what they were doing when the ship blew up. “This was a tragic accident but the truth is that it could have been much worse. For most visitors, however, it is the beauty of the plants and trees which make the Alameda such a magical place; many are native species while others are imported. At certain times of the year, various cultural events take place in the gardens’ open-air theatre. Tours of the Botanic Gardens are also available. Two important monuments can be viewed here, but pride of place goes to the General Elliot Column and the impressive bronze ordnance at its feet. At the entrance are two of the four Russian guns given to Gibraltar by Britain, for Gibraltar’s help during the Crimean War, in 1858. The main plants of the Alameda Gardens from the earliest days were the Stone Pine, the wild Olive, and the Dragon Tree. It would appear that some of these trees, which still survive, pre-date the opening of the garden and thus are at least 200 years old. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1856 and then to Colonel five years later. He was stationed in Gibraltar as a member of the 55th from 1851 to 1854 being promoted to captain more or less half way through his time on the Rock. 21/04/2024🇬🇮 New Cepsa petrol station opens on Kingsway A new Cepsa petrol station on Kingsway has opened. In a first for the Rock, the station is now also home to a CarrefourExpress. The old Cepsa, on Winston Churchill Avenue will be vacated by the end of the month. The team behind the project say it's taken years of work. Plans to move Cepsa Gibraltar to Kingsway have been in the pipeline for almost as long as plans for the tunnel began. Works could only commence once the tunnel was complete so this last year has been full steam ahead as the team worked on constructing its new home. Building a petrol station, near the water and next to a runway is no easy feat. Cepsa says quite a bit of its business has come from across the border in the past and that the swap to the tunnel did have quite an impact on its old store. A major change to the station is the addition of carrefour express. It’s the first time the supermarket chain has had an outlet on the Rock. Whilst the location and station is important, prices are pivotal. Cepsa says since the re-introduction of a fuel-duty discount from the Government, they’ve managed to return to competitive prices.
