He was the illegitimate child of a farmer and enlisted in the Hessian militia as a teen, likely in hopes of improving his station. After serving with the British during the American Revolution, Reed deserted and fled to North Carolina where he married Sarah “Sally” Kiser. She had inherited a respectable part of her late father’s estate, which helped them establish a small farm and provide for their family until their fortune changed when one of their sons discovered a 17 pound gold nugget on their property. After that, the entire Reed family began searching for gold and amassed a fortune. By the time of his death in 1845, John Reed was *almost* a millionaire in today’s money, but not quite. This document claims to be the first declaration of independence from Britain by the American colonies, pre-dating the national Declaration by over a year. . Celebrated in Charlotte, North Carolina, as "Meck Dec Day," its authenticity is debated by historians. While the document itself surfaced much later, the anniversary is a chance to remember North Carolina's role in the American Revolution, even if the Mecklenburg Declaration's legitimacy remains unclear. . Admiring the bandana designed by my talented professional artist cousin Rachel Ellen Johnson with her husband Casey, a memento from their recent marriage celebration, a lovely affair in the town of Lansing, Ashe County, North Carolina. It earns a place of honor on the McMillan trunk brought from Scotland in the 1700s by our ancestor John McMillan and his wife, Mary McLamont, to Ashe County. The circle continues in the land of Outlander, with items made by aunts, cousins (including Rachel's mother, Tina, grandmother, Ruby, and our late aunt Minnie), my mother Sue and grandmother Anna, great aunts Idella and Ruth, great grandmother Cox, and a quilt made by my great-great grandmother, Ellen Ray. William Biddle Shepard was born #OTD in 1799. William was the oldest son of William Shepard and Mary Blount. In 1843, he married Ann Daves Collins, his second wife. They had three children together with their son William Blount Shepard being the only one to reach adulthood. William Biddle Shepard also ran Shepard Farms, a section of land that was originally part of Somerset Place that was inherited by Ann. The first daughter born to John and Sally Reed was their second child, Frances “Fanny” Reed. She was born sometime in 1785, two or three years after her parents married. At the age of 19, Fanny married William Craton on March 9th. The couple had nine children together, although the 1830 census indicates the existence of a tenth child. . Evidently, Fanny’s in-laws had a poor reputation in Cabarrus County, with a court document specifying them as a “slippery crowd.” That is likely why her father ensured his will specified that Fanny’s portion of his estate was to be held in trust for her until her husband’s death. . However, John’s protectiveness of his daughter’s financial interests was in vain. The Museum of Ashe County History’s Spring Open house will be taking place tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. During this event we will be dedicating our newest exhibit, “Commerce and Community: General Stores in Ashe County.” Visitors can come and enjoy some bluegrass tunes from Seven Bridge Bluegrass, and sample dishes from the 1938 Skyland Post Cookbook. There will also be a used book sale and silent auction, as well as activities for kids to enjoy! Other local non-profits will also have information tables set up about the work they do for our community. This event will be held at the Museum of Ashe County History located at 301 East Main Street in Jefferson, NC and is FREE and open to the public! We hope you’ll swing by!
