With the finishing touches layered into each of the gardens and spaces, the Chelsea Flower Show is drawing closer and closer. Yet before we look towards new approaches and ideas by renowned designers like @ann_mariepowell @miriaharris , @tommasseyuk or @tomstuartsmith (to name a few) and thrilling design debuts to the show by @ulamariastudio or @hollyjohnstondesign — it is time to look back at last years gardens. One of which impressed through a delicate choice of plants paired with a unique mindset to a zero-carbon approach. Artist @sarahpricelandscapes grasped and thrilled designers and the public alike. Created with @rachel_asl and build by @localworkstudio the “Nurture Landscape Garden” combined historic techniques with a modern twist, letting each human that was part of the process, leave a trace of their own. From strands of hops tied into ropes, reimagined waste aggregate bricks to straw-bale walls covered with hand painted and reclaimed canvas. In drawing from the mind of Sir Cedric Morris and his legacy left at “Benton End”, Sarah painted a space like none other. With Iris “Benton Olive” taking the attention, to the succulents like Aeonium arboreum “Zwartkop” in the mix. Dive into the full story of the space through the link in bio @hautejardin I am thrilled to return to Chelsea this year to capture the inspirations, stories and approaches within design, planting and their future-proof-ideas. #rhschelseaflowershow #chelsea #chelseaflowershow2023 #sarahpricelandscapes #thenurturelandscapesgarden #rhschelseaflowershow #gardendesign #top50gardendesigners #gardeninspiration #plantinginspiration #plantingdesign #gartengestaltung #garteninspiration #gartengeschichten #london #projectgivingback #sustainablegardening #sustainablegardendesign #rhschelsea #gardening #gardenphotographer #landscapephotography #gardendesignphotography #gartenfotograf #gartenfotografie #gardenmedia #gardenpr #gardencommunicators #gardenmediaguild

„Frill Thrill“ — every year these ravishing beauties open up their petals catching the first summer-rains upon their frilled edges, drenching themselves in vivid greens and hazy pinks. A moment worth pondering about. This tree support goes way beyond a simple stake and tie. It is Probably the best tree support we’ve seen it’s a real work of craftsmanship. The tree which is a Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum) can be seen @kewgardens it has been lovingly cared for, supported by the custom built brick support and ironwork cradling the branches. The Tree is one of the oldest in all of Kew Gardens as it was transplanted from the Duke of Argyles estate in around 1762. If trees could talk we can only wonder what tales this specimen could tell us, living through World Wars, Coronations, droughts, storms and not to mention the millions of visitors to Kew year on year. We can’t beat that but we would like to thank you all for supporting us on our horticultural endeavours. Todays milestone of 1500 followers means the world to us and with things warming up and the seedlings are growing there’s lots of work to be done in the garden and plenty of gardens to visit and volunteer at so stay tuned to see what flowery fun we’re up to next 💚 @kewgardens @gdnmediaguild #horticulture #kewgarden #kewgardens #trees #history #arboretum #arboriculture #gardensofinstagram #support #gardenmediaguild

So happy to see my 3rd article for @prelovedmagazine nestled within the pretty pages of the latest Spring edition. The theme is 'New Beginnings' and couldn't be more poignant. I write about my new old house, my fascination for the umbel, and my delight at death, - of a plant, that is.💚 "I surprised myself, the emotion I felt, blindsided by their form, by the raw beauty I found in the dry, hollowed out sticks... How this was the end and yet the beginning. The very act of seed-shedding meant the promise of new life to come."💚 I am joined by my wonderful friend @bishybarnabeescottagegarden whose seed business is going from strength to strength, deservedly so, and whose support has been invaluable. It's so important to champion other people whose work inspires you, to lead with kindness and to give credit where it's due.💚 To that end, thank you to Sophie @stoneandsagecurated who has even given me a credit on her inside cover. I have no idea where this will lead but I am grateful for the few doors that have opened for me, grateful for the courage that made me walk through them, to have made such beautiful connections.💚 I will continue to fly the flag for the dead stuff (and the weeds) and I've included a couple of images of #lovelydeadcrap creations, transformed from shite you'd chuck in the bin into a new life.💚 The new front cover is gorgeous, courtesy of Rebecca @myenglishcountrycottage and @mumonmuddylane . Here's to new beginnings. Happy Transformation Tuesday, folks! With love. 🌸🌿 Heirlooms that Grow 🌿🌸 Here we have this gorgeous Tuberous Sweetpea which belonged to @richard94bowman Great Grandfather, he proudly took bunches along to local horticultural shows and was quite often rewarded for his labours🏆, now in the hands of the next generation to nurture and who knows a bunch of its blooms might head to the local village show this year! It’s an unknown variety that’s always been known as ‘Grandads Legacy Sweetpea’, he kept the seeds very close to his chest never releasing any to potential rivals at the shows. Its luscious green foliage is starting to climb the canes preparing itself for the blush pink flowers 🌺 in the months to come. With the sprouting of the shoots it made us think who else has a plant that’s been blooming for generations? There’s something truly magical about heirloom plants, isn’t there? 🌱 Each one carries a story, a piece of history, and a connection to generations past. From the vibrant hues of antique roses to the nostalgic flavours of grandma’s ancient apple tree 🍏 , heirloom plants enrich our lives in countless ways. They remind us of simpler times, perhaps a reminder of hardships it’s faced with their custodians, the love and care poured into nurturing them year after year or that lasting memory of a loved one. ❤️ As we tend our gardens and houseplants, let’s not forget to nurture these horticultural treasures and preserve their legacy for generations to come. 💪Whether it’s a cherished family houseplant passed down through the ages or a newly discovered gem with roots in a bygone era, every heirloom plant holds a special place in our hearts and our gardens. Do you have any treasured heirloom plants in your garden? 🌿 We’d love to hear your stories and see your photos! Share your heirloom blooms in the comments below and let’s celebrate the beauty of horticultural heritage together. 🌼 @national_sweet_pea_society @the_rhs @rhsgrassroots @rhs_learning @plantheritage @gardenorganicuk @gdnmediaguild @queergardenersuk @gardenmuseum @museumofgardening #heirloomplant #garden #sweetpeas #rhs #rhslevel2 #rhslearning #gardensofinstagram #flowersofinstagram #gardenmediaguild #plantheritage

Happy Easter Treats. We can't get enough of these Wild Tulips - Tulipa sylvestris. Somehow this year they have escaped the ravages of Muntjac, pheasants and pigeons to flower magnifcently for us. The appearance of the poet's daffodil tells me my weekly bouquet treat will soon be over for another year as this is one of the last daffodils to flower. I used to have an enormous swathe of these blooming outside from April to May when we first moved here but they got shaded out by the local trees. Note to self: must plant some more later this year in a better spot. I've seen lots of people are saying slug damage has got the better of their daffs this year. Here, damage has been patchy, how's it been with you? Tulip “Margarita” from @peter_nyssen is always the mainstay of the Purple Reef collection. An early double variety it always provides the first glimpse of the glamour of the double tulips. It is one of those solid performing tulips that has the perfect height and form to underpin the collection…beautiful as a standalone tulip but grown here as a backdrop for the taller late doubles and parrots that will follow. In the Purple Reef “Margarita” has the perfect crossover shade to balance the dark maroon varieties and the more shocking pink/magentas. @peter_nyssen supplies this variety and can be purchased at great value especially if you order in higher volumes. In this collection I needed at least 100 “Margarita” bulbs to harmonise the appearance. #peternyssen #doubletulips #tulip #tulips #tulipseason #purpletulips #purpleflowers #pinktulips #magentatulips #pinkflowers #magentaflowers #springbulbs #showusyourshoots #gardenmediaguild #springgardens #springgardening

Two of my favourite plants right here.💚 They have been sown from seed and both decided to join me in my new garden, having tested the soil waters, as it were, and, it seems they approve.💚 Some special memories from the last garden I tended came with me to this new place, nearly 5 years on and for a while there I thought they had given up the ghost. But here they are. They just needed time to take root, strong foundations from which to blossom, sort of mirroring my journey.💚 I do love the meanings behind the flowers; enchanting foxgloves for their magical lure of fairies and forget-me-nots symbolising fidelity, and a promise to remember loved ones. They are both biennials and nectar-rich bee and insect magnets.💚 These are my offerings for #showusyourshoots - part of a beautiful initiative by @the_rhs and @gdnmediaguild to fill our feeds with flowers and spread the joy.💚 What will you show? I am not sure we have had a better Magnolia year here. The absence of frost and ‘beasts from the east’ has meant that they have flowered unchecked and untarnished. Here, for example, are: 1. A general view across the Magnolia Lawn, with Narcissus Mount Hood showing well in the foreground 2. M. soulangeana (white form) 3. M. soulangeana (pink form) Both these were planted with the house in 1902, and would have been new ‘trophy plant’ introductions from Yunnan and Szechuan provinces. 4. M. stellata Rosea 5. M. loebneri Leonard Messill 6. All the way from New Zealand, one of the Jury family’s recent introductions, Jury’s Red The garden re-opens for the season on Friday, 22 March. #englishcountrygardens #magnolias #kentweald #wealdofkent #gardenmediaguild #ngskent

MEET OUR MEMBERS We're back with another intro to a GMG member. Today we shine the spotlight on @nicolahopegardener - here she tells us more about herself and her work. Hi, I’m Nicola, an organic horticulturalist and garden designer. I am a full member of the GMG having participated in the excellent mentor scheme. I am based in the Cotswolds where I run an organic gardening consultancy and garden design service. I specialise in creating beautiful, functional, sustainable and wildlife-friendly gardens, have a particular interest in organic fruit, vegetable and flower production and I have an all-consuming passion for topiary. I adore sharing these passions and present regular talks to gardening clubs, face-to-face and via Zoom. I am a Royal Horticultural Society Master of Horticulture and have a diploma in Professional Garden Design from the Cotswold Gardening School. I studied Art and Design followed by Fine Art at Cardiff, but longed for the university holidays when I worked as a gardener at Highgrove for the then HRH Prince of Wales. I went on to study Organic Horticulture at Pershore College and Worcester University. Botanical travels to Southern Africa, south-western China and alpine Italy followed and then I found wonderful gardening positions at Sting’s Lake House, The Abbey House Malmesbury and leading designer Anouska Hempel’s Cole Park. I rose through the ranks to become head gardener in a beautiful private Cotswold garden for nearly thirteen years and I continue to develop my horticultural knowledge and individual style. The GMG has encouraged me to cultivate my writing skills and I am currently working on a project that is allowing me to delve deeper into the world of organic horticulture. #meetourmembers #GMG #gardenmediaguild #gardening #horticulture

Last week I had the great pleasure of interviewing @matthewchildsdesign for an article about his lovely garden. Meanwhile here’s a pic of one of his spring pots,he plants lots of beautiful seasonal pots right near the house, to be seen through big windows at the back of the house. Look out for his garden for the Terence Higgins Trust at RHS Chelsea this year. Have a great day all. P.S. Good morning folks! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend? 💚I've had a flurry of new followers over the past a few weeks, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to introduce myself to those of you who don't know me. 💚I'm Mike Palmer, or Mike the Gardener, as I'm known by everyone, a plantaholic & garden fanatic. I've gardened since I was seven and I set up my own garden design and maintenance company many years ago. I still have a handful of clients, but most of my time is spent being co-chair of the Garden Media Guild (@gdnmediaguild), or producing my own gardening podcast, Mike The Gardener - Gardening Podcast. 💚I'm also a garden writer, and have my own Substack, Mike The Gardener - Rambling Prose, and a fortnightly column in Amateur Gardening magazine (@amateurgardeningofficial) 💚Many years ago, I was a stand-up trainer, but these days, I just love sharing my gardening knowledge, skills and experience here on Instagram. I love producing helpful posts, stories and reels that show what I'm up to in my own garden, or what's looking great, with a dash of humour thrown in. 💚Most Sundays I go live here on Instagram at 10.00am (GMT) with Mike's Sunday Stroll, which I've been doing now for coming up to 4 years - we started in lockdown, and we have a fun hour chatting about gardening, with me sharing gardening and plant advice. 🖐🏼So, that's me in a nutshell! 💚If you're a new follower of mine, thank you for joining this wonderful gardening community. ❗️Why not shout out and say hello down below and tell me who you are and what you love most about gardening.

I rarely see images of gardens that include people, especially in publications. Public gardens are for the public, and so I deliberately captured with people in the frame of of my images. More via my journal on my website - link in Bio. What would gardens be without people, and what would people be without gardens!? What touched me the most was the number of people going about their day in a beautifully tranquil green space. The gardens felt less like a garden to visit occasionally, but that it was rooted in their lives. A young man that was feeding Monkynuts to some Squirrels shared how he regularly comes to spend time with the Squirrels. People were milling around, some were ‘people watching’ whilst sat enjoying time out on one of the garden’s many glorious Victorian seats. Regulars were taking a lunch break, and others were watching their children expend energy. Volunteers were attending to flower beds and boarders. Sheffield Botanical Gardens felt very personable, and I loved that. Such a beautiful, tranquil space for the people of Sheffield, and external visitors like me to enjoy. . Grade II listed glass pavilions. by Benjamin Broomhead Taylor, restored and reopened in 2003. . Captured on a 65 year old mechanical film camera.

MEET OUR MEMBERS Today we're going to finally introduce you to GMG Vice-Chair, Kimberley Hornby of @hornby_george_pr aka 'me'! I'm actually the person that handles all the GMG social media so I've already spoken to many of our members since I joined committee in early 2023. I've just been hiding behind the scenes - sorry about that! But with a big year ahead of us and lots of development plans on my to-do list I wanted to formally introduce myself to you all. I am absolutely passionate about the GMG and the things that we can achieve together. Being able to see all your content, how you support and cheerlead one another, and your unyielding passion for the world of garden media is just superb - and I really hope to add even more value to this with the GMG. In this role I want to give us all a voice, to facilitate more conversation and to help celebrate your successes. Working with the wider committee and alongside our excellent co-chairs @mike_thegardener & @the_middlesized_garden_blog we hope to expand our event programme, skill sharing and Buddy Scheme, and ensure that you all get the absolute most out of your membership. Look out for forthcoming initiatives such as 'The Now Generation' and a renewed webinar schedule for the year ahead (including a 'media pack' webinar which I'll be running next month). I remain open - as all committee members are - to our entire membership to answer any questions/needs/grumbles/thoughts you might have so please don't hesitate to reach out via [email protected] Whilst I'm not on GMG duty I own my own specialist PR agency, representing garden, horticulture & lifestyle brands, businesses, people and products. This has been my passion for nigh on two decades and I love every single minute of it. Looking forward to meeting more of our members throughout 2024! But for now, I'm off to enjoy all the posts you've been tagging us in! Do keep sending more content our way and I'll do all I can to include/promote/engage. #GMG #GardenMediaGuild #meetourmembers #gardenPR #gardenmedia

Today, I listened to a really interesting podcast by Sarah Wilson, a Horticulturist and founder of 'ROOTS & ALL'. She was joined by guest speaker Paul Sterry, a wildlife author & photographer. I am continually on the lookout for valuable and worthy points of reference from experts like Paul for my own gardening for nature endeavours. Paul’s latest book, The Biodiversity Gardener, pulls together his wealth of knowledge with real-life examples for us all to help support and grow biodiversity. It really is a lovely piece to listen to over a cuppa when you have a few minutes. A message from Paul that resonates with me is through the word’s ‘colonisation’ and ‘collective’. For plants, animals, insects etc. to colonise, green spaces for nature in the UK need to build in number so that they become neighbours, not sterile bubbles. The more we consider nature when managing our plot of land, through a simple positive habit-forming act such as trimming not cutting a lawn, the more we will be helping small creatures to survive, for example, and that our offspring are likely to adopt such valuable and planet friendly value from us. MY GARDEN FOR NATURE Whilst in its infancy, it already is a joy. I fell for gardening after immersing myself in a dear friend’s 'garden for nature’ last year. My garden is now foremost for nature, and secondary for me. Over the months I have been surprised by how simple changes to a garden can make a significant difference. There is still much to be done, but it almost feels as though in a blink of an eye nature has come to my corner of the world. Birds flit from one food source to another, bees …. More over on my website via MY GARDEN. . Visit the website of @rootsandallpod for a diverse list of topics.
