May garden Tips! You may have noticed your hydrangeas are starting to look a bit tired – don’t worry! Hydrangeas are deciduous and will drop their leaves gradually over the course of winter. You can prune the plant back at any time once the leaves are looking decidedly yellow; this is a signal the leaves have stopped producing energy for the season and will drop off soon. Prune any stems that flowered this year back to a strong pair of buds, about two thirds down the stem. Another day in the garden. I picked out so many rocks from the garden today! In row three I planted orange carrots, purple carrots and beets. Row four has beans; regular green and string beans. I am a second generation farmer and in 2000 inherited my father’s grow in CA. I spent 20 years in Northern California working as a cultivator. After 15 years in the legacy market, and 5 in the legal market, I successfully fulfilled my father’s dreams as a cultivator and since have moved on. The pressure of owning and operating California’s first permitted cultivation site (my family's small farm) was an incredibly heavy burden on me. Not only was the stress of legalization a heavy weight to bare, but so was watching all of the small family farms in my community parish. My heart and roots will always be with the small farmer.
