🕯️A Dreadful Splendor🕯️ 🕯️A fake spiritualist is holding a seance for a bride who died on the eve of her wedding. Can she pull it off and figure out who the killer actually is? 🕯️Rating: 📚📚📚 I liked this read! Felt it was a little different but I had a hard time staying interested in the story, felt myself drifting in and out. I found the second half of the book really interesting and then I got into it and tried to figure out the twists and turns the plot would take! #ADreadfulSplendor #reading #reader #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookworm #books #bookish #bibliophile #bookaholic #booklover #bookstagrammer #bookreview

Historical Fiction Book Recommendations 🗝️ A Dreadful Splendor by B.R. Myers (2022) Features: - Takes place in Victorian London - She’s running from the law and is hired to perform a seance for a bride who died the night before her wedding - Locked-room mystery - More on the light-hearted end of gothic - The romance was a bit insta-love-y but still enjoyable - Kind of turns into a thriller towards the end Summary: London, 1852. Genevieve Timmons has made her living posing as a spiritualist to swindle wealthy believers, until one misstep lands her in a jail cell awaiting the noose. Then a stranger, Mr. Lockhart, arrives to make her a peculiar offer. The lord he serves, Mr. Pemberton, has been grieving the mysterious death of his beautiful bride-to-be for six months. Although no foul play was ever uncovered, the young lord is convinced that she was murdered. If Genevieve can hold a séance to persuade him that his betrothed’s spirit is at peace, Mr. Lockhart promises to have the charges against her dismissed and reward her with enough money to start a new life. But when Genevieve arrives at Somerset Park estate, she discovers that the handsome and aloof Mr. Pemberton is anything but the heartbroken lover she expected. Mr. Pemberton then approaches Genevieve with an offer of his own: together, they will stage a séance so convincing it will coax the killer out of the shadows. Attempting to play both sides until she can determine which plan holds the key to her freedom, Genevieve prepares to stage a haunting. But when ghoulish incidents begin to plague the manor, the dogged heroine realizes her tricks may not be required after all. Somerset and its residents are hiding many deadly secrets, and its ghosts could be all too real. #gothicreads #gothicfiction #paranormalfiction #historicalfiction #simonestjames #historicalromance #historicalromancereader #historicalmystery #bookrecommendations #gothicbooks #bookstagram #gothicbookstagram #spookybooks #bookish #adreadfulsplendor

🔮 creepy Victorian mystery vibes in the springtime please and thank you 🔮 I'm not very far into this one, but I'm already quite hooked. Here's the syonpsis: In Victorian London, Genevieve Timmons poses as a spiritualist to swindle wealthy mourners--until one misstep lands her in a jail cell awaiting the noose. Then a stranger arrives to make her a peculiar offer. The Lord he serves, Mr. Pemberton, has been inconsolable since the tragic death of his beautiful bride-to-be. If Genevieve can perform a séance persuasive enough to bring the young Lord peace, she will win her freedom. Soothing a grieving nobleman should be easy for someone of Genevieve's skill, but when she arrives at the grand Somerset Park estate, Mr. Pemberton is not the heartbroken lover she expected. The surly--yet exceedingly handsome--gentleman is certain that his fiancée was murdered, even though there is no evidence. Only a confession can bring justice now, and Mr. Pemberton decides Genevieve will help him get it. With his knowledge of the household and her talent for illusion, they can stage a haunting so convincing it will coax the killer into the light. However, when frightful incidents befall the manor, Genevieve realizes her tricks aren't required after all. She may be a fake, but Somerset's ghost could be all too real... 🐈‍⬛️[cameo: needed a little help holding the cover down and there was a very helpful Hobbes nearby] 🔮💕💀💕🔮💕💕🔮💀💀💕💕💕🔮💀💀🔮💕💀💕🔮💕💕💕 #adreadfulsplendor #ghoststories #historicalmysterybooks #bookstagram #bookstagramlife #booknerd #reading #readingaddict #midwestreader #bookrecommendations #bookishthings #bookcover #booklover #tbrpile #currentlyreading #tacklingthetbr #bookstagramnewbie #bookobsessed #readersofinstagram #bookishlife

A Dreadful Spendor by B. R. Myers "Think of all those tortured people who ask us to speak to the dead. That’s what loving someone else gets you—deep, unending grief. If you never want to feel that pain, protect your heart." -quote from A Dreadful Spendor This fun Gothic murder mystery brims with romance, betrayals, and chills. A fake spiritualist is summoned to hold a séance for a bride who died on the eve before her wedding, but as nefarious secrets are revealed, the line between hoax and haunting blurs. Vacation Reading Wrap Up, aka beach reads and other musings 📚☀️🌊 I fully maintain that any book qualifies as a beach read - just put sand under my feet, a book in one hand, and a frozen drink in the other. This is my nirvana. Audio books are my new secret weapon for travel days, especially easily digestible and (relatively) short memoirs. Nothing makes long flights and waits in airports pass faster than a good audio book! So here’s my Caribbean reading list, in all its glory: 🏝️ Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura 💍The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins 🕯️ A Dreadful Splendor by B.R. Meyers 🐈‍⬛ Big Little Spells by Hazel Beck 📸 Under the Influence by Noelle Crooks 👙 My Body by Emily Ratajkowski 🌟 Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling Top read of the trip was wholly unexpected - My Body by Emily Ratajkowski. Filled with artistic storytelling and insightful social commentary, this went far deeper than the average celebrity memoir. An incredible, vulnerable discussion on body autonomy and the commodification of women in the 21st Century, as well as how beauty standards insidiously sink their roots into girls by the time they even first learn how to speak. Near the end, as the book begins to come full circle, Emily cautiously admits she prefers to think of herself as a writer these days, not just a “mannequin.” She says it so hesitantly, like trying something on for size and being unsure of the reception or fit. Here to confirm: this girl is one heck of a storyteller (and therefore, a writer), and I would love to read another book by her! 𝑨 𝑫𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝑺𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒓 𝒃𝒚 @brmyerswriter 4⭐️ In the 19th century Miss Timmons, a fake spiritualist, has finally been caught and is offered a unique opportunity to stay out of jail. She must convince the Lord of an estate of a true seance so he can find peace after his wife’s death. Mr. Pemberton has his own ideas, and plans to use her to seek out his almost-wife’s murderer during the seance. The many characters of the estate have their own quirks, and it appears Miss Timmons may not be the fake she thinks she is. Ghostly experiences accompany the eerie estate, and I was left on my toes the entire novel. No one can be trusted, and you cannot be sure of Mr. Pemberton’s true nature until the end. And what about the angry ward of Genevieve’s late father? First Book Review of the Year! QOTD What was the first book you read this year? This week, I read B.R. Myers' A Dreadful Splender! In Victorian England, Genevieve Timmons has an amazing skill. She is a spiritualist and is able to bring peace to families by allowing them to speak to dead loved ones. Her skill isn't in speaking to the dead, but in convincing everyone that she can do so. When her con finally catches up to her and she is arrested, she is given a choice. Use her skills to bring peace to a rich Lord or face the noose. She chooses to pull off one last con. But this time, things start to get a bit too real... even for her! I couldn't put this book down. I loved the gothic Victorian setting, the characters were fun and vibrant, and the story was suspenseful. I strongly recommend checking out this book if you are a fan of fantasy and historical fiction. Definitely a fun read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Read for: set in the Victorian era I enjoyed this book! It was a fast read, fun, and easy. I ended up guessing the twist, but I liked that the author included all the information to let readers figure it out on their own. I didn’t care about the romance as much, but it was more of a subplot with the mystery taking centre stage. #adreadfulsplendor #bookstagram #booklover #booknerd #bibliophile #bookworm #bookaddict #bookish #readersofinstagram #reader #readinglist #52booksin52weeks

🕯Boom Review: A Dreadful Splendor by B R.Myers 🕯 Let me start by saying this is a soft cover jacket, and is so nice to hold when reading, it just feels good in your hands. And can we admire the artwork for the cover?! Stunning! Stunn.Ing! OK, that's enough gushing, let's get onto the review. 🕯 I'll admit, I didn't read the blurb properly, but "In this ghoulishly fun Gothic murder mystery brimming with romance, betrayals and chills, a fake spiritualist is summoned to hold a séance for a bride who died on the eve of her wedding, but as nefarious secrets are revealed, the line between hoax and haunting blurs" just grabbed me straight away, I didn't need to read more! However, it is set on Victorian London, a period book, probably one of my worst genres. .. at least it was, until I read this magnificent book! 🕯 I've usually struggled with period books, as I just don't get lost in them as more recently set books, though this has definitely opened my eyes! It was so well written, the POV between Genevieve, our spiritualist, and Audra, our dead bride-to-be dairy entries, you can connect the dots, and feel as though you're investing the case along with the characters. 🕯 I cannot express how amazed I was by this book, I cannot fault it at all, it had everything I wanted in a book, and the bonus of me welcoming period stories is an absolute win! 🕯 If this book sounds like your cup of tea, please please please pick it up, it is so enjoyable, and caught me of guard in places, and had me thinking about it when I wasn't reading. If like me, a Victorian era story isn't up your street, why not give it ago, it may change your mind, too! 🕯 @brmyerswriter #brmyers #adreadfulsplendor #harpercollins #williammorrowbooks #paperbackbooks #newtomebooks #secondhandbooks #victorianerabooks #seance #murdermystery #murder #mystery #somersethouse #gothicmurdermystery #romance #december #decemberbooks #booksof2023 #eveningreading #myreview #myhonestreview #whatithought #whatiliketoread #finishingabook #fiction #girlswhoread #tattooscluesandbookreviews #spoiltbookgirl #bookgeek #bookgirl #girlswhoread

🕯️REVIEW🕯️ ———————— ✧ ———————— 𝚃𝙸𝚃𝙻𝙴: A Dreadful Splendor 𝙰𝚄𝚃𝙷𝙾𝚁: B.R. But if you’re someone who likes to keep things spooky as the days grow shorter and colder, I’d recommend picking up A DREADFUL SPLENDOR–an eerie, Gothic ghost story with a fair bit of romance! (⇦ swipe for full synopsis) 🕯️This book ticked all the boxes for me. The Gothic atmosphere was 10/10. Every spooky story hinges on whether or not the location is chill inducing. And what’s more fitting than a menacing, derelict house on the edge of town atop seaside cliffs? Somerset Park had quintessential ominous Victorian estate vibes, with its heavily curtained windows, creepy housekeeper, rambling acres and tempestuous coastal storms. The séance and paranormal activity added to the ✨dark✨ magic of it all. 🕯️There are two timelines, each with its own mystery. Who killed Mr. Pemberton’s fiancée? What is the truth of Genevieve’s past? Both are excellent and equally gripping! Genevieve feels compelled to discover Pemberton’s personal history and his character. She obsessively pursues the mystery surrounding the deceased fiancée who seems to haunt Somerset. In doing so, she inadvertently unravels a web of deception 🕸️ 🕯️So many twists and turns, a few of which really caught me by surprise! I’d definitely recommend to anyone looking for a Gothic mystery full of suspicious characters.

Don't you love it when a book just hits the spot? The blurb describes it as a "gothic murder mystery romance" and I was like yes please! Especially after the disappointment of my last book. My only two peeves were the repetition of phrases and the easy solve of the mystery. However, given Meyers has mainly written YA and it's a common feature of contemporary YA. Don't young adults find repetition as annoying as I do? Anyway, it's not as bad as some other YA writers so I can overlook it. The mystery was an easy solve for me, but given how much I love the genre and that I love puzzles, it's not such a bad critique.  Despite knowing the solution, I was still totally into the ride Myers put me on and would not have got off for the world.  Genevieve is a teenage heroine I can get behind. She's fallible but self aware, there was no emphasis on her looks and she is very resilient. I felt the chemistry between her and Gareth so their romance was believable and not cringey at all.  She writes a lot better than a lot of other American YA writers and her tone is pretty good for Victorian England.  Altogether, highly recommended if you like a historical murder mystery thriller. There are a fair number of ghostly horror scenes, but not so bad I couldn't fall asleep after reading them.

𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘆 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 . . Longing for a read that pairs perfectly with crisp fall days, where rain patters against your windowpane, and the candle flame gutters, while you take a sip of apple cider? Then this is the book for you. A Dreadful Splendour has Impeccable Spooky Vibes. Myers deftly manipulates her readers through suspense and chilling atmospheric vibes. If you loved Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, this YA novel will be a Victorian set treat for you. Seances, ghosts, murder, not knowing who to trust, and numerous secrets pervade this absolute gem of a novel. The story grips you from the beginning and keeps its chilling clasp on you until the reveal. I loved switching from the present, to the diary entries, to long lost memories. It was an intriguing device to drive not only the plot line but the mood as well. My only complaint was the epilogue felt rushed, but I guess that is to be expected, as one tends to never want the story to end. This was a standing ovation 5 star read for me, and bonus points for it being an Indie-Canadian authour! 💗 . . ➡️ This book might be for you if: you enjoy female protagonists with moxie, a critical eye to the supernatural, and a side love story to go with the creepy. Genevieve poses as a spiritualist to swindle wealthy mourners and I thoroughly enjoyed how her line of work meant she wasn't fooled by the supernatural--she spends her time setting up rooms to mimic messages from beyond the grave (table knocking, candle snuffing, and even ectoplasm!). So when she begins to consider the possibility of the supernatural, as readers we trust her as our compass and wonder alongside her. Early in the novel she's arrested for misleading her clients, and is facing the noose, but a mysterious lawyer posts her bail on the condition that she travel to his client's estate in order to convince the grieving Lord Pemberton that his recently departed fiancé is at peace. The problem is: Pemberton believes she was murdered. Genevieve is pulled in different directions, doubting the motivations of everyone at the estate, but as readers we're a bit more in the know with chapters from the dead fiancé's diary. Myers is also careful to thread in a touching background story that really rounds out Genevieve as a character and makes you want to root for her. I picked this book up purely by chance, being all caught up on my various podcasts and needing something to listen to I figured this was suitable for getting into fall/spooky season vibes. Then I listened to the whole thing in a single day. Completely engrossing with amazing characters and twists. Highly recommend for people who want to add to their spooky season TBR list @brmyerswriter #adreadfulsplendor #gothic #mystery #couldntputitdown

A Dreadful Splendor ✨ B.R. Myers “Think of all those tortured people who ask us to speak to the dead. That’s what loving someone else gets you—deep, unending grief. If you never want to feel that pain, protect your heart.” Genre: Gothic Mystery, Historical Fiction Thoughts: Really Liked 🥰 This was a very fun book. Our FMC, Genevieve, is a medium (read con-artist), is so entertaining. She’s cunning and smart, with a strong sense of self-preservation. I loved the spooky setting of the English manor on the seaside, and the cast of characters we find at the manor. A Dreadful Splendor is a whodunnit murder mystery that kept me guessing until the end. Read if you like: ✨ Ghost stories ✨ Séances ✨ The English countryside #review #adreadfulsplendor

The current reads are giving…I had no idea what I was in the mood for this weekend. ✨ The Eye of the World (3%): I read the first few books of The Wheel of Time series when I was a teenager, but never continued on with the series. I’ve decided to go back and read from the beginning, one book per month. I’m only 3 chapters in, but I am very happy to be back in a high fantasy world. ✨ Excavations (22%): The synopsis said this is set on an archaeological site in Greece, which is all I needed to know to pick it up. This is pretty funny and entertaining so far. ✨ A Dreadful Splendor (25%): Séances, ghosts, a murder, and an English countryside manor. I am very much enjoying this one. ✨ Between Us (38%): I love Mhairi McFarlane’s work, and this book is no different. Really liking this one that is out August 8th. What are you currently reading? #currentlyreading #moodreader

❤️ /Ina . . . #wowzadelux #bokkompis #bokinstagram #bookstagram #adreadfulsplendor #brmyers #theinnocentwife #amylloyd #thehouseinthewoods #yvettefielding #älskaböcker #bokinstagram #bookstagram

A Dreadful Splendor had a fascinating Good Reads description which really got me intrigued at the bookstore. “In this wickedly whimsical Gothic murder mystery brimming with romance, betrayals, and chills, a fake spiritualist is summoned to hold a séance for a bride who died on the eve before her wedding, but as nefarious secrets are revealed, the line between hoax and haunting blurs.” Come on… gothic elements, murder, and romance? What mix could be better than that! Can’t wait to read this one (hopefully) soon, maybe I’ll ask my book club if we want to read it closer to October! 🌸 May Reads 🌸 . Have been in quite the reading slump- not to mention the nice weather has me occupied with outdoor activities, but still managed to get 5 in!

The only thing that stood out to me regarding this book was the cover. Until I started reading it, I couldn't tell you anything about it except that it's cover was amazing and autumnal. No matter how many times I read the back cover my eyes glazed over and absorbed absolutely nothing. Needless to say, it was a huge shock to get about a hundred pages in and become completely enraptured. This was a fantastic read with many likeable characters and twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #brmeyers #adreadfulsplendor #adreadfulsplendorbybrmeyers #murdermystery #gothicromance #gothicfiction #mystery #paranormalfiction #paranormalmystery #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookaddict #fivestar #5star #fivestarread

In A Dreadful Splendor, con artist Miss Genevieve (Jenny to friends) Timmons keeps a roof over her head by holding seances for the wealthy as cover for burglary. This time, when she's caught, it seems there will be no escape. Until help arrives from an unlikely source. She is hired to hold a seance for a man whose fiancee died (her last one, she promises herself) so that he can find peace. Shuttled off to his country manor, Jenny has no intention of seeing the job through. Mr. Gareth Pemberton has other ideas. He demands not a seance for peace but one for justice. Pemberton wants to use the theatrics to call out a murderer, eliciting a confession. With his threat of a return to jail and eventual hanging, Jenny has no choice but to start investigating the suspicious death, uncovering details she can use in her act to unmask a killer. Unfortunately for Jenny, a nonbeliever in the supernatural given her own methods, things start to get alarmingly spooky the deeper she digs (to be clear-- Jenny's alarmed, but I was not). My first gripe with this book is the unnecessary romance. Early on, Pemberton gets upset when Jenny assumes he'd only care if she died because she couldn't finish her job-- a job he's blackmailing her into doing with her literal life on the line. He frequently reminds her of his threats while otherwise showing her disdain and distrust in every interaction. I'm not sure how she's supposed to intuit some level of care for her person from that. That kicks off their infatuation between plotting together and snooping for clues. Because it was so inexplicable from a character standpoint and yet somehow predictable from a trope and narrative standpoint, I found the romance superfluous and uninspiring. In terms of the mystery, I saw many reveals coming due to more reliance on tropes. Some of the plot devices were exactly the same as those used in another Gothic vibes mystery I read this very month. The one twist that eluded me relied on a woman's unanticipated cruelty (cool) and unhinged madness (le sigh), so it left a slightly sour taste in my mouth. I'm tired of mad Victorian women. *continued in comments

Gothic. Mystery. Historical Fiction...sign me up! 👻 I consumed this via Audiobook format and really enjoyed the narration. The story itself is fun and keeps you guessing - I particularly like how our MC, Genevieve Timmons, continues questioning other characters' motives throughout the novel, which provides the reader with a feeling of instability (perfect for a gothic/mystery genre), much like the instability of some characters psyche. Despite the theme of ghosts, I wouldn't describe this as very spooky, so a younger audience could easily consume it. If you're going to read it any time of the year, I'd highly recommend it during Fall/Winter, as it's easy to digest quickly and would be perfect for cozying up on a cold day. Are ghosts real or not? You'll have to read to find out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 — #bookstagram #books #booksbooksbooks #booktok #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookreviewer #genre #fiction #bookseries #historical #gothic #mystery #adreadfulsplendor #brmyers #williammorrowbooks #williammorrowpaperbacks

Give a book challenge 📚 Thank you to @ptsungirl for the tag!!! Finally catching up on my challenges and decided to combine this with my love for the Thursday Murder Club series since I just finished a re-read. -Give a book to make someone smile: Romancing Mister Bridgerton. The best book in the bridgerton series imo with the cutest and steamiest romance. -Give a book you don’t talk about a lot A Dreadful Splendor. This is a wonderfully written gothic novel that I read last year and it has stuck with me ever since. It has seances, hauntings (?), and some light romance -Give a book you can’t stop talking about The Thursday Murder Club (and its subsequent sequels). This whole series is comfy and feels like a warm hug. I love all the characters and I feel like everyone should read it at least once. And then re-read it. I’m literally counting down the days till book 4! -Give a book that people are either going to love or hate: The Inheritance Games series. I loved this series with my whole heart – the clues, romance, and treasure hunts and I’m so excited for the fourth book! This series does have a love triangle so proceed at your own risk -Give a book for someone who needs to get in their feels: The Dead Romantics. This is a beautiful love story that also touches on grief. -Give a book with immaculate vibes: Gone Girl. This book has everything: a missing wife, an asshole husband, family secrets, buying a gun on valentines day, and a masterpiece of a twist. -Give a book for someone who likes to be surprised: Nine Lives. A retelling of Then There Were None with a twist that I gasped at. -Give a book for someone who needs a little love: Magpie Murders. It’s a detective book within a detective book that’s a love letter to Agatha Christie with a modern twist. -Give a book that’s an old favorite: The Night Circus. I read it in high school, and I’m forever amazed at just how special this book is and what joy it brings me. -Give a book that you think everyone should read: The Thursday Murder Club series) I know I already sung its praises but its such a comfort series with such lovable characters. So go immediately read all of them and preorder the 4th one!

Grateful for readers who take the time to support books they’ve enjoyed❤️ Posted @withregram • @booknookprints A Dreadful Splendor by B. R. Myers was just about everything I could ask for in a gothic novel! A faux spiritualist, a spooky manor house, a mystery to solve and a little romance. Honestly, probably a bit too much will they won’t they on the romance for me but it comes with the gothic suspense territory. I was disappointed to find B. R. Myers does not yet have any similar works gothic available for me to dive into. I very much look forward reading what she publishes next! If you’re an audiobook “reader” you know the narrator makes or breaks the experience. Olivia Vinall, was an excellent narrator. I’ve not heard her before but will keep an eye for her narration work in future. Overall, this was an easy 5/5 for me. Hello friends! How is your reading going? I feel like I’ve had such an odd few weeks of reading. I’m currently in the middle of what seems like a million books, and not actually finishing many at all 😅 A Dreadful Splendor is one of those reads. It sounded cool—a spiritualist conwoman gets pulled into a scheme by a rich manor lord and ends up encountering real spirits—but either my mood or the book’s pacing has just kept me from pushing through it. I’m also reading The Girl in the Woods, Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murders, some kindle romances…. I wasn’t kidding, I’m in the middle of a lot! Today marks day one of my vacation/honeymoon time with my partner, Cody. We’re driving for a longggg time in the next few days, so I’m hoping to sneak at least a few hours of reading while we’re on on the road 🤗 (And maybe sharing some photos and fun of your trip too.)

🕯️ 📖 REVIEW + MOOD BOARD 🕯️ Title: A Dreadful Splendor Author: BR Myers Genre: Gothic Mystery Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review: One of my favorite reads of the year. It was everything I wanted in a chilling gothic mystery set in a haunted victorian mansion on the cliffside, on the sea. A bride is killed on the eve of her wedding. A fake spiritualist is hired to lure the killer out. But she soon discovers she cannot trust anyone in the estate, and they shouldn’t trust her either. (Spoiler free) I really enjoyed the haunting atmosphere and following Jenny, the spiritualist, on this journey. She was a well thought out protagonist with an unfortunate backstory — but it helped us understand her decisions. I was also really drawn in by the chemistry and romance between Jenny and her love interest. This book is reminiscent of old fashioned gothic romance thrillers of the 60’s, and it was a fun read. However, I was able to guess the biggest plot twist at 1/3 of the book. It was still fun to discover who was responsible and the motive though! I also felt the resolution was rushed and generally don’t like when the villain just spells the entire story out for us and the MC. While Jenny was given a lot of depth as a character, the other side characters that played some major roles in the plot, as well as the antagonist didn’t feel fleshed out. Their motives at the end didn’t really feel convincing. I still think it is a strong 4.75 or 5 stars because I loved the gothic and mystery elements so much! I had a great time reading this one! Swipe for how I imagined the aesthetics of this book! 🖤📖 . . . #bookstagram #book #booklover #bookish #bookcommunity #adreadfulsplendor #murdermystery #bookrecommendations #gothicmystery #gothicbooks

This was sooooo good. Jenny is a conwoman who performs fake seances in Victorian London to make a living. After getting caught in her last con, a man discovers her and bails her out to perform one last fake seance: to ease the lord of a manor of his fiancé’s death. However, the lord of the manor tasks her to perform a fake seance so convincing that the supposed murderer confesses to killing his fiancé. This book had great worldbuilding and great writing skills. There were many moments in this book that had me laughing out loud, as Jenny was such a funny woman. The manor was fully of mystery and suspects, and many betrayals, you will literally have no clue what the truth is and whether or not there’s a real haunting in the mirror. This mystery thriller was so entrancing I stayed up late reading it. DISCLAIMER: slight spoilers ahead The tropes in this book include: slow burn romance, clean romance, guy falls first, witty banter, hate at first sight, and Victorian gothic murder mystery Moving on to the romance😏😏😏 Lord pemberton was a classic tall dark and broody, until he started falling for her (which was fast for him) and he became mischievous . And I loved their witty banter #adreadfulsplendor
