✨️ Throwback Thursday & Book Review ✨️ 📖 The Other Side of Midnight 🖋 Simone St. James Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thoughts: Another perfect read by Simone St James! This was a murder mystery involving psychics and people with supernatural powers. This kept me hooked right through, rooting for the characters and wondering how it would all work out. Great books! I enjoy her more recent books as well, but her backlist is written set further back in history and I am a sucker for historical fiction, so her older books easily rate a little higher for me. If you're looking for historical fiction, light thrillers, with supernatural elements, I suggest picking up one or all of these! ARE YOU SUPERSTITIOUS? (A mini series of stories about bad omens) I recently googled to find out which is the most superstitious country in the world, fully expecting it to be Ireland. Surprise, surprise; it wasn’t. It was India. Perhaps we are beginning to shake off our belief in bad omens in Ireland. I was brought up by superstitious parents and it took me years to abandon their worries about single magpies, broken mirrors, spilled salt and peacock feathers, to name but a few. MAGPIES - Fortunately there weren’t as many magpies around years ago when compared to now. My mother was obsessed with single magpies. As soon as she saw one, she would count backwards from 10 and finished by saluting the bird and saying “Good day, Mr Magpie”. It makes me laugh to think of this now but my mother took it all very seriously. I remember we were on our way to watch one of my brothers competing in a show jumping competition and, horror of horrors, my mother spotted one of the black and white birds sitting menacingly on the branch of a tree. A few hours later, in spite of carrying out her ritual of counting backwards, my brother fell off his horse and broke his leg. That was definitely the magpie’s fault. #HappyPubDay to Disturbing the Dead. This is my favourite in the Rip Through Time series so far. Mummies, murder, time travel, a Hand of Glory, a black market based on the Goblin Market, slow burn romance…just so good. I love how this series gives me all the cozy feelings while also including some delightfully spooky details. Kelley Armstrong is one of my favourite writers, whichever genre she writes in, I know the book will be warm, imaginative, witty, and a bit creepy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 Thank you to @Netgalley and @minotaur_books for my review copy of this book.

✨ “The Elusive Truth of Lily Temple” by Joanna Davidson Politano ✨ 🎞 Can we first appreciate this gorgeous cover? Stunning! 😍 This book is set in 1903 about about Lily Temple, a silent film actress who crosses paths with Peter, an investigator for the wealthy, when she’s seen wearing a legendary gemstone that he’s hunting down for a client. Our main characters are very unique. She’s very fanciful and sly, but has a child-like love for stories. He’s spectacled, smart, rule-follower and has a love for finding out the truth. A pair you wouldn’t think would work, but somehow does. He’s the calm to her storm, in a way. 🎞 I would mark this as 14/15+, but I think it would depend on the girl and her reading level if a younger girl is interested in it! Teenagers and older who enjoy historical mysteries and trying to figure out what’s going on will probably enjoy this book the most. ~No Life For A Lady by Hannah Dolby 🏖🔎. Big thank you to @headofzeus for #gifting me this amazing book and package 🩷~ ~I found this such a fun read and easy to get into. I loved Violet's character and how she stood up to people for the rights of women, being as the time she lived in was very against ladies working and doing much other than running a household. It was admirable how much she wanted to become a detective, and I loved how Mr. Blackthorn always supported her ideas instead of treating her badly like some of the other men she encountered. The storyline about her mother going missing was interesting, and I'm glad she got some justice against the people who had wronged her later in the novel. There was also a lot of humour woven into this, and the beach setting in Hastings was lovely to picture. A SPECTACULAR RUIN - I’ve visited many ruins and old abandoned houses in Ireland. They seem to attract me, but they also help with inspiration for my dual timeline novels. From Norman keeps to castles, Georgian mansions and Gothic Revival piles, I love them all. If I had to pick only one though, it would be Duckett’s Grove in County Carlow. The approach to Duckett’s Grove is nothing short of spectacular. In fact, there are two approaches, one via the main avenue underneath a Victorian Gothic arched gateway and the other, which was presumably a back entrance, where we drive along a narrow road, turn a bend and suddenly the house, in all its ruinous splendour, appears. I like both avenues but the second is the most dramatic way to arrive. While Duckett’s Grove has a reputation for ghosts (like most of these old places), its family history is fascinating. I’ve written about it in my blog ‘Scrapbook’ on my website if you’d like to read how a banker’s daughter’s fortune spent on the house ended up as an ‘angry shilling’ left to another daughter decades later. 🕸️book review💀 The Reformatory by Tananarive Due is a historical horror novel set in Jim Crow Florida. The protagonist, Robert Stephens Jr. is sent to the Reformatory as a punishment following a trivial scuffle with a white boy. He soon finds out that this school is very, very haunted - but it’s not the ghosts, or haints, that he really should be worried about, as the living can be much more terrifying than the dead. This was a challenging read, tough to get through at times - and to think that so many people went through very similar experiences but in real life is just infuriating and heart-wrenching. The characters felt so real and well-rounded, and I immediately took a liking to Robert and his sister Gloria. Their relationship nearly brought me to tears several times - Gloria is probably one of the fiercest characters I’ve met, fighting with all her might to get her beloved little brother out of danger. The pacing starts as maybe a little slow in the beginning but boy, does it pick up. The last 100 or so pages made my heart rate speed up and I was simultaneously afraid to keep reading and unable to put the book down. The author really zoomes in on the scenes building up to the climax as we follow each character almost minute by minute, all the while uncertain about their survival. Rarely has a book kept me on edge in this way! This was definitely an unforgettable read, and I’m looking forward to picking up more by Tananarive Due. I would recommend this book not only to horror fans but to anyone looking for a deep and meaningful historical fiction novel that is also a page-turner. I especially recommend listening to the audiobook; the narrator, Joniece Abbott-Pratt does such an amazing job bringing all the characters to life 🫶🏻 Creepiness: 👻👻/5 Gore: 🔪/5 Scare factor: 🕷️🕷️.5/5 My rating: 🦇🦇🦇🦇.75/5 Do you enjoy reading historical fiction? This week I listened to the audiobook of Murder at the Dressmaker’s Salon by C.J. Archer, read by Marion Hussey, this is book 4 in the Cleopatra Fox mystery series. I am quickly becoming a fan of this series, Cleo is a great character and I like how she works with Harry in this book. This is set in 1901 in London and makes you think about how the traditional roles of women and the upper classes were already starting to change. This weekend I read Terror in Topaz by A.M. Stuart, it is #4 in the Harriet Gordon mystery series set mostly in Singapore in 1910. This book was set in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but we see the same characters supporting each other to solve the mystery. I am a fan of this series, the time and place are new to me and so interesting. Each book is a stand alone but as with all series you see the characters grow and change and can appreciate arcs in the overall story line. She can't help but pursue leads that take her around Paris and into the catacombs, much to the dismay of police inspector Merveille. While I usually try to figure out who the murderer is ahead of the reveal, these "American in Paris" mysteries are such a joy to read, with interesting characters, historical tidbits, Tabitha traipsing around 1950's Paris, and Julie Child's culinary tips, that I find myself just enjoying the "tour" and trying to savor every moment of the book before I reach the end. Our MMC finds himself investigating the mysterious death of Edgar A. Poe and faces ridicule, abandonment and betrayal on all sides. The brilliant part of this novel is that it’s a true story! Poe really did die in the circumstances described and, to this day, the facts are a mystery. While the main character is fiction, the story is non-fiction. The prose is wonderful! The writing style and sentence structure reminded me quite a bit of Dracula. Elevated language and well structured sentences!? I’m in heaven! There isn’t much action in this book. It’s a mystery and an investigation and an exploration into the psychology of obsession. Hilarious, nostalgic romp with a solid mystery! I laughed out loud while reading author Joy York’s “The Bloody Shoe Affair,” the first book in Ms. York’s “The Jailer’s Daughter Mystery” series. Two fourteen-year-old cousins find themselves in an adventure when they believe a man jailed for murder is innocent and decide they’ll go about solving the crime. The spunky girls must be extra secret about their investigating because one cousin’s dad is the jailer, and their house is attached to the jail in this small town. Handy for the girls to question prisoners! The book is a nostalgic ride into small town life in the American South of the 1960s. Everyone knows one another, and the soda fountain is great place to quiz folks for information. I loved the author’s descriptions of the outfits the girls select to wear: the psychedelic colors, the hip huggers, the wide white plastic belts. I was taken back in time when the kids scramble to find a teen old enough to drive, and one with an actual car! This mystery is not only a delight to read, but it has a solid mystery that had me guessing to the end. ✨Series Spotlight✨ The Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn is such a delightful historical mystery series. Veronica is a strong, smart, and stubborn protagonist, and her interactions with Stoker, her brooding partner, are flirty and fun. I often find myself laughing out loud while reading these books. The mysteries are engaging and resolved satisfyingly. I cannot recommend this series enough. I’m anxious to pick up book three soon.
