I met Toronto’s Phyllis Berck last summer when we competed in the 10K for Team Canada’s track & field team at the 21st Maccabiah Games in Israel. Phyllis is an incredible woman, in and out of her running shoes, and I am honoured to profile her in the fall 2023 issue of Canadian Running Magazine. For years Phyllis has been an advocate for female athletes, championing every level of government to increase opportunities for girls and women. For her work in this realm, she was awarded the Queen’s 50th Jubilee Medal in 2002. Equally passionate about transforming a city befitting the highest levels of sports competition, she worked on the organizing committees for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and Toronto’s 2015 Pan Am Games. Berck is a strong athlete. At this year’s Tokyo Marathon she was one of 14 Canadians, in the 70+ age category, who earned her Six Star medal, in her 11th marathon. Three weeks after Tokyo she ran a 26:29 in the 5K for the age group win at the Around the Bay race in Hamilton, Ontario. WINTER SEMESTER RUN SCHEDULE: Hello everyone! We hope you had a relaxing winter break. We are excited to announce our new schedule from January to April 💪🏼🤩 We will offer 5k runs on Mondays AND Wednesdays at 7:00PM EVERY week. We will also offer 8-10k runs on Sundays at 9:30AM EVERY OTHER week. Runs are drop-in and start and end outside of Convocation Hall, unless otherwise stated. Routes and run announcements will be posted on our social media prior to each run. Vaccination is highly encouraged, although proof is not required to join. Attendance is taken at all runs for contact tracing and record keeping purposes. The first weekday run of the winter semester will be on Monday January 16. The first weekend run will be on Sunday January 22. Swipe right for meeting location and other FAQs. IMPORTANT CHANGES: Our schedule was created based on the availability of our run leader team. Please note that we are not offering our 7:30AM runs due to later sunrise times and unpredictability with early morning sidewalk clearance in the case of snowfall the evening prior. We have replaced this morning run with a Monday evening run. We have also pushed our Sunday run to start 30 minutes later based on feedback we received from our members. Our team has several new and exciting special running events and collaborations this semester so stay tuned to our social media for more details! 👀 CANCELLATIONS: Runs will be cancelled in the event of weather that makes it unsafe to exercise outdoors - this includes temperatures below -20ºC, thunderstorms, and snow storms. It was so surreal to get back into the @SixSideEntertainment routine with my better half @gunjan_marwah at the 41.5K mark of the @towaterfront42k today and to witness how much people can really achieve if they set their minds to it.
