Taking a cue from @thedakguy I want to show my appreciation for the Natural Encounters staff on this special #MacawsomeMonday. If you don't know, Natural Encounters is the team that staffs both Winged Encounters and Feather Friends in Flight. While both shows are amazing, I am partial to Winged Encounters and try to see it often. It's a short five minute or so experience, but seeing dozens of macaws flying in past the Tree of Life is a memorizing experience every time. The big takeaway from Winged Encounters, to me, is the World Parrot Trust. The WPT is a global organization dedicated to conservation of parrots in the wild and ensuring compassionate care in captivity. Winged Encounters The most #Macawsome show at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Six times daily on Discovery Island in front of the Tree of Life. Two weeks until DAK's 26th Anniversary! I hope to share some content that is extra special to me in the days leading up to the 22nd. Some of my favorite photos from the past year and some special moments. A macaw’s unique appearance is akin to a human fingerprint. Ranging in color from the brightest red through to turquoise, yellow and bright indigo, these birds are a sight to be seen. What’s amazing is that each bird’s coloring is distinct to where they live and their vibrant colors actually blend quite well with the Amazon’s rainbow-colored plants and foliage. By animal kingdom standards, macaws are a long-lived bird. While living in the wild, their average lifespan is around 60 years. However, under the right conditions, they can live up to 100 years. Domesticated macaws often have to be put in their owner’s will because they will likely outlive them. Today is the day, the day I finally get back to Animal Kingdom! After 23 days I will once again return to my rightful home alongside my animal and human friends. It won't be a long visit since I won't get to the park until after 2 most likely, but my plan is to be back Saturday morning. While I enjoyed Universal and AK Lodge, nothing will replace DAK for me so I'm thrilled to be back. If you reached out to me for photos, this is the week I will be figuring out how to make it happen. I am hoping to be in the park today, Friday afternoon/evening and then all day Saturday. Winged Encounters Heading home after the show. #wingedencounters remains my favorite show at DAK. The noise and flashes of color in the sky are an amazing spectacle. I would encourage you to take in at least one show during your park visit. There are three different flocks. Each flock typically flies one morning and one afternoon show. The shows only last a few minutes and pick in so much action and information in this brief span of time. Surprise! 💙✨️ I couldn't do a #BirdWeek and not include DAK's most beloved bird, so here's a bonus post with the most goodest boy, Mr Nimbus! Nimbus is a blue hyacinth macaw, a parrot native to central and eastern South America. With a length of about one meter, it is longer than any other species of parrot. It is the largest macaw and the largest flying parrot species in the world. In 2018, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made a determination to list the hyacinth macaw as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) due to population declines resulting from deforestation, hunting and predation. If you'd like to help these amazing birds, you can donate to organizations dedicated to protecting hyacinth macaws, such as the Disney Conservation Fund, the World Parrot Trust, or World Wildlife Fund. Although the theme of the week was the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, that's not where you'll find Nimbus. Winged Encounters The rarest of the 8 macaw species involved with #wingedencounters is the blue throated macaw. Recent population and range estimates suggest that only about 350–400 individuals remain in the wild. Humans are the biggest threat to blue-throated macaws. Steep population declines can be traced back to the 1970s and '80s, when more than a thousand birds were caught in the wild and exported from the country to be pets. There are only two wild populations in the world, both within Bolivia. One lives north of the city of Trinidad, and the other lives to the south of Trinidad. Winged Encounters takes place six times daily on Discovery Island in front of the Tree of Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Shows start 15 minutes after the hour from 9am to 11am and 1pm to 3pm. I really wanted to show off these beautiful photos I got of Nimbus for #macawmonday but I forgot and now I'm too impatient to wait for #wingedencounterswednesday so instead I'm going to use #treeoflifetuesday to highlight this handsome guy. Nimbus doesn't always come out for #wingedencounters so it's a treat when he does. He stands out among the other #macaws as the only all blue one. And I feel like he knows how special he is because he always waits for all the other macaws to leave so he can get some special attention and treats from the awesome keepers who seem to always need to carry him back to his home back stage.
