Another cover of @architecturalreview seen at an exhibition at the #wigmorestreet store of @margarethowellltd of 50 of the magazine’s covers from the #1960s and #1970s. #billslack was its #arteditor at the time this issue - November, #1976 - was published. Covers were purely visual, unadulterated (you could say?!) by even simple #coverlines. This cover shows #southgateestate in #runcornnewtown in #cheshire, which was designed by #jamesstirling and completed in #1977. It was demolished, we’ve discovered, in the early 1990s and replaced with another housing development, #hallwoodpark. Stirling’s brief was to model the new estate on Bath’s formal #georgian streets and squares but he went boldly #offpiste with a more #futuristic alternative - think #raisedwalkways in a #streetsofthesky vein, apartment blocks made of #precastconcrete panelling, colourful cladding, landscaped squares and children’s parks. However, the estate would prove unpopular and unworkable by the sound of it - it was expensive to heat (the 1973 oil crisis was still biting) and suffered from severe damp problems. We loved the #capsuleshow of 50 covers of The Architectural Review from the #1960s and #1970s at the @margarethowellltd shop at #wigmorestreet, London last autumn, all chosen by Margaret Howell herself. It highlighted the editorial freedom enjoyed by the mag: ‘Since the magazine was sold by subscription and delivered each month by post, the cover did not have to reflect and maintain a brand identity for the puposes of newsstand display,’ stated the exhibition’s introductory text. Suffice to say the almost purely visual covers were free of busy #coverlines. The show was ultimately a paean to the work of #williamslack, aka Bill Slack, the mag’s #arteditor for 30 years from 1960. Here’s a snippet from the same text panel: ‘Architecture is a notoriously difficult subject to convey in two dimensions. Few could claim to be so consistently as inventive as Slack… A single photograph or illustration encapsulated the issue’s key editorial theme. 11 - Quadrilinear - Clamping Bolts This public artwork by Lee Simmons was inspired by the local street map and comprises five number, 5mm thick stainless steel sheets clamped together. A single sheet by itself would never be able to withstand the wind and temperature effects but by compressing all five tightly together they act as one composite structure.
