Meet Ramona, a.k.a Mona! She is with animal control after being chronically loose on busy roads. She grew street smart and stayed off to the side to stay safe. Despite a life of neglect, she has a nice temperament and is truly a sweetheart! She would be a great match for a kind person with some large dog experience. She likes to learn and already knows some cues. As a smart dog, she will do well if given more training. Ramona is good with dogs she gets to know, but with such upheaval in her life, she will benefit from being the only pet in the home. When she is out for walks and sees other dogs, she ignores them completely. She reacts only when a dog is forced on her but she responds to redirection. Since she is a big girl, she should not live with young children. The officer at West Springfield animal control says she did well on an evaluation from a certified behaviorist. However, she is getting no exercise or enrichment, which is difficult for any dog let alone an active one who likes to run around and explore. Shelter life is very difficult for her and as a pound dog she has limited time. Mona NEEDS EVERYONE to share her urgent need or apply to foster online. Seth Smith passed away on September 11, 1896. His great-grandfather, Jonathan Smith, donated the land that would become Paucatuck Cemetery, in 1770. On March 10, 1730, he was chosen as a surveyor of highways for Springfield, Massachusetts. Seth’s grandfather, David Smith, served in the Revolutionary War. Seth married Sarinda (Nichols) Smith on May 2, 1860, whom he had four children with, one of which died in infancy. They lived on Dewey Street in what became the Smith-Bingham House. Seth’s house was dismantled piece by piece around 10 years ago and transported to another town, but still stands to this day. Benjamin Ashley passed away on November 9, 1856. His grandparents, Benjamin and Jane (Shaw) Ashley, married on December 31, 1726, having six children together. Jane was born in Ireland. Benjamin lost his father when he was only two months old. He then lost his mother when he was 13 years old. Benjamin served as a fence viewer of Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1731, 1737, and 1740. Benjamin’s father, Benjamin Ashley, served in the Revolutionary War. He also served as a selectman of West Springfield, Massachusetts, from 1800 to 1801. Benjamin operated a boat building yard in West Springfield, along with Daniel Ely. He owned the sloop Hampshire of 90 tons, which was built in the town. Benjamin married Sarah (White) Ashley on January 28, 1802, whom he had three children with, one of which died in infancy. He became a member of the First Congregational Church of West Springfield in 1816. Benjamin conducted a large farm on his father’s land in the Ashleyville section of West Springfield. There, he kept a large number of stock and several hundred sheep. Benjamin also owned a saw and shingle mill at Bear Hole. He built the first steamer that was intended to operate on the Connecticut River as a steam ferry boat. Benjamin, along with his son, Daniel Ely, operated the ferry between West Springfield and Chicopee. He served as a onstable in 1690, as well as a selectman in 1697. Lucy’s grandfather, Simeon Adams, served in the French and Indian War. He was captured twice and carried to Canada, but was exchanged and returned. During his captivity, Simeon stated that he fared as well with the Natives as with the French. Lucy married Rufus Mather on October 31, 1815, whom she had six children with, one of which died in infancy. Congratulations to my sweet seller who got top dollar for her beloved family home of 40 years in West Springfield! My seller was no longer able to live on her own and moved out west to live with her daughter last year. Over the past 10 months her daughter came out a couple times to clear out her mom’s personal belongings and decide what would stay and go. Lucy (Barron) Ely passed away on January 8, 1808, due to childbed fever. Her father, William Barron, was labeled as a Tory during the Revolutionary War. Lucy married Justin Ely on December 4, 1802, whom she had three children with. She became a member of the First Congregational Church of West Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1807. On December 21, 1807, Lucy gave birth to her daughter, Lucy Barron Ely. It was her 30th birthday as well. Just 18 days later, Lucy passed away from childbed fever.
