Meet Kathleen Kathleen Byers is a source of much joy to those who meet her every day in her role as a crossing guard at Queen and Shaw. Through singing and dancing to music, playing from a Bluetooth speaker that she carries, Kathleen brightens everyone’s day. A while back I shared film photos I took of Kathleen but returned in late March to take some more photos of Kathleen in action, using a 35-150 lens I had on loan from @tamronamericas, as well as to do a short interview. Kathleen has been featured by many local media outlets - including @blogto @zoomer_radio and Breakfast Television - for good reason. Her joy but also her wisdom. Here are a few pearls that I gleaned from our conversation: - “My secret is ‘Stay on your feet!’” - “Life is about person-to-person, not all internet.” - “If you have money but don’t have a life, what have you got?” - “We all want the same thing, we need shelter, we need food - we love good food - we love music, dancing and fun. All this stuff as humans, we’re all the same.” I’m so thankful to have met Kathleen. Our world is brighter and better thanks to what she brings. . Queen St W from Bellwoods to Claremont, JUNE 14, 2010 Assembled today. This is the last one except for the big one (contiguous six block collage to Bathurst). Here, I’m working with choices from fourteen years ago. I shot almost no overlap for this one. That made it very simple to assemble; I’d made the seam choices in-camera. Some spots are widened because they are in the distorted edge of the wide angle lens and I should try fixing the worst spots. I always felt like I was racing a clock when I capturing blocks. Would I get to the end of the block before the light changed or someone parked illegally? As well, I was shooting in between traffic a lot of the time. That afternoon I started at Northcote and shot the north side to Bathurst. "Gem," "Succulent," and "Where Earth Meets the Sky 9" by Loree Ovens, part of our current exhibition, TOUCH 2 (a way of knowing). "I am a mixed media artist who often incorporates washi, handmade Japanese paper, into my work through drawing, painting, stitching, collaging and traditional printmaking. Often combining the use of surface design techniques for textiles, my fascination with line, pattern, and architecture continues to influence my work. I am inspired by folk art, handmade things and pattern-making around the world. I am drawn to the energy created from handmade objects and fascinated by the processes involved in their making. I find creating work very meditative and grounding. I enjoy pushing the boundaries of my own practice and the constant learning that comes along with it.
