#concertdiary2023 28th and 29th concerts of the year, Oct. 29th and 30th with the Santa Rosa Symphony, Rohnert Park, CA. Carnival of the Animals is definitely one of the most hilarious pieces I’ve ever performed. I loved pretending to be a roaring lion, a crowing rooster, a leapy-but-somewhat sad kangaroo and of course, a weirdo pianist, but my favorite was the dark and pensive atmosphere of the cuckoo. The pianos play gorgeous sombre chords while the cuckoo (aka the clarinet) does its cuckoo thing in the background. While we pianists are being misty and mossy in the woods, the cuckoo is loving being a little cuckoo jerk and getting its loud, somewhat obnoxious cuckoos in. Such a great mix/contrast and too perfect. Thank you, Saint-Saens! I have to add that beyond getting to play Carnival, it was a real treat to have my very own dressing room for this show, with a piano no less! I full on envy musicians that always have this, it made a huge difference to my mental state just knowing I’d have a comfortable, warm and quiet space in which to get ready. It was mine! All mine! And…I’m super grateful to Kymry for asking me to do this gig. The first time we met was the Tuesday before the show for a quick rehearsal and it was obvious from the get go that, hey, we were going to get along famously. He is a tremendously nice guy who loves word play (I’ve since learned), a great player, a killer sight reader and I loved every minute of being on and off stage with him. Hours of work: It’s hard to say exactly….many? Kymry got in touch with me in early September about doing the gig and by the time the concert rolled around it was mostly memorized (I find French music easy to memorize for some reason, much easier than German, go figure) and I felt super comfortable on stage. Two months was just enough time to learn it and let it settle before performing it for the first time. In the studio this week are some amazing musicians and dancers working to perfect "The Rebirth of Apsara". It is a full-length dance/theatre work that investigates the relationship between art and war exploring how Cambodian arts and in particular Apsaras, fabled female celestial beings, have embodied the essence of Cambodian culture from ancient mythology to its post genocide resurrection. Our brains have been firing on all cylinders, creating an identity for UC Berkeley’s Weill Hall, Neurohub East (in association with University of California, San Francisco’s Neurohub West and University of Washington’s Neurohub North). The hall seeks to accelerate the important work of studying and developing new treatments for diseases and disorders of the brain. ASPS is please to share a special Art Song concert in the NYC area at Carnegie Hall. Kessa Mefford is classical pianist currently based in Westchester County, New York and her colleague, soprano Kristina Cook and has been working together for the past three years on a project to record and perform the complete art songs of Maurice Ravel. They will be performing the program at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and releasing the album in December in a culmination of these years of research and rehearsal. The art songs of Ravel are severely underperformed; according to Carnegie’s meticulously kept online performance history archive, there are several songs they will be performing that have never been performed at Carnegie Hall. They will be the first to bring these songs in their entirety to Carnegie Hall, they may also be the first duo to bring it to any concert hall in the entire world. To ensure harmonic authenticity, they are performing all the songs in their originally intended keys, which is possible due to Kristina’s incredible range and training as both a mezzo-soprano and a soprano. In addition, they are performing all originally intended languages or dialects. It was an absolute pleasure to perform at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie. The incredible acoustic was such an enjoyable of it.
