AKG D25 - $1k - Here’s an AKG D25 Dynamic Microphone from the 1960’s! AKG made a few different microphone models with their famous D12 dynamic capsule / bass chamber combo. The main difference between the D25 and other AKG models was the shock mount which allowed the body to be suspended between the poles. AKG D12E - $625 - Here’s an AKG D12E Dynamic Microphone from the 1980’s! AKG’s D12E was the later version of the D12, and featured the same design as the original D12 with a few parts changes. The D12E has a plastic bass chamber (the original was metal), the diaphragm is made of a different material than some of the original D12 models, and the body requires a clip as opposed to the original using a cable / threaded adapter mounted to the body. Overall, the tones are similar, but the D12E tends to have a tad deeper low end than the earlier models. This D12E has been serviced and retains its full low end. RCA 77-DX - $1,750 - Here’s an RCA 77-DX Ribbon Microphone from the 1960’s! The iconic RCA 77-DX was known as “poly-directional” due to its variable directional patterns available via the adjustable acoustic labyrinth on the backside of the microphone. While the 77-DX is the same exact build as the 77-D, the DX model has a few db of extra gain due to some changes in the transformer. Overall this 77-DX is in great cosmetic condition, with a few chips to the center section of the microphone. This 77 also has a cannon connector mod, signifying that it was likely used in a radio station for most of its life. Sennheiser MD408 late 1960’s Swan-neck microfoon. Sounds great for electric guitar and for vocals. There’s a lot op people who say that it had the same cap as the MD409, but after doing quite some digging I am not able to confirm this, The cap might be the same, but the diaphragm is in fact slightly smaller. The sound is also slightly different from an 409 as in, the low end is a little less dominant while it does have that sweet midrange and clear rounded high-end. Yesterday @warmaudio announced they're making a reproduction of the AKG D19c and that's really exciting! These mics are most famous for being the drum overhead on the majority of The Beatles studio recordings at Abbey Road, as well as seeing use on piano, acoustic guitar, percussion and even vocals. They haven't been produced for a long time though and second hand working examples now go for between 600 to 900 quid! They were known to be pretty much impossible to repair for a long time (Frank @lust.for.mics.repairs 🇮🇹 seems to be the only one who can do it) so they've been getting rarer and rarer. I've had a few in my time that sadly died.They have a common problem of losing all the low end. These are my two current working D19 mics. A D19c and a D19e. I really like the E model as I think it has a bit more meat. It's been over the drums on all The Poppermost recordings. The new @warmaudio version is selling fairly cheap (£200ish) so can't bloody wait to grab a few and try them out in the studio. Beyerdynamic M360 - $950 - Here’s a Beyerdynamic M360 Ribbon Microphone from the 1960’s! These lesser seen ribbons have a different motor structure than any other Beyer ribbon (large horseshoe magnets), and an acoustical labyrinth that helps gives these microphones a hyper-cardiod pattern. These models were very expensive at the time, costing more than double the price of the M320 and a good bit more than their top of the line M160. M360’s are great uni-directional ribbons, with a crisp high end and depth that makes them a nice option for vocals and more. Cosmetically, this one looks good with a few scratches here and there and comes in the original case. The mounting options for this particular microphone are limited, and I’d recommend using a Triad Orbit M2 for ease of use. In this weeks exploration of the #miclocker at the studio, I've got the rest of the #beyerdynamic section. First is a Beyerdynamic M260 from the 60's. This would have been made in the first few years of production. M260’s have single ribbons, as opposed to M160’s, which have two. The M260 has a real hick low end and a slight roll off in the highs. Second is a stereo pair of Beyerdynamic M260N's from the 70's with original case and paperwork. The LOMO 19a4 is a tube small diaphragm condenser manufactured in small quantities by the LOMO plant from 1963 - 1968. It is estimated that approximately 300-400 19a4s were produced in that time. The microphone uses the 6S6B subminiature tube, which is also used in the 19a10, 19a13, 19a14, and 19a18 microphones, and is the Soviet equivalent of the AC701K. It is powered by an external 20B50 PSU which has "ONLY FOR USE WITH 19A4 MICROPHONE" inscripted on its face. We presume that the reason for this is because there is a second version of the 20B50 PSU that was used with 19a18's from the same era, but the 19a18 had its coupling cap in the mic body, whereas the 19a4 has the coupling cap in the PSU. It can be deduced by looking at it that the microphone was heavily inspired by the Schoeps 221b, and like the 221b it has a rotating capsule head that allows the user to cover or open the capsule’s rear vents, thereby changing the mic’s polar pattern from cardioid (vented) to omni (closed). And while we have not compared the two mics side-by-side, the 19a4 has a similar rich and velvety sound with a slightly rounded top end. Despite being somewhat dark sounding, it has excellent transient response and is still able to capture incredible detail without any harshness or midrange emphasis making it both natural and euphonic at the same time. This makes it a fantastic choice for room mics, acoustic guitars, overheads, guitar amps, and bowed instruments. As I continue to explore my #miclocker , we take a stroll down Beyer Boulevard. 4 mics , 2 models, let's go! First is a 60's @beyerdynamic m160. This hypercardiod ribbon microphone is Beyer's most famous. It has a dual ribbon element, which is 2 ribbons stacked on top of each other, giving it more depth. The m160 has a smooth and slightly dark frequency response. They are great on overheads and guitars. Second is also a 60's Beyerdynamic m160 that was rebranded by another German company, Strasser. Third, we have a stereo pair of 60's Beyerdynamic 818 dynamic microphones. This is a LEGENDARY 1970’S Raindirk Series 3 Mixing Console made famous by Olympic Studios (The Beatles, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Motorhead, Oasis, Prince, Procol Harum, Queen, The Rolling Stones, U2, The Who) The Series 3 is a split style console with 26 Mic/Line input channels with switchable direct outputs, 8 groups routable to 24 outputs, 24 monitor inputs plus 12 effects returns - total 62 inputs. The series 3 has a high quality low noise mic amp using a quality microphone transformer. The input channels and effects returns are fitted with 3 band eq. which provides very musical equalisation. The meter bridge houses 24 VU meters to monitor the multitrack machine sends and returns plus 2 large VUs and an RTW meter on the stereo bus, there are also phase and aux meters. Being a split 70’s style desk it operates differently than modern In Line consoles and later Split Mode consoles. When this desk was manufactured the monitor bus and the remix bus were completely separate, whilst track laying the engineer would listen to the group/tape monitor section via the control room speakers, then when it came time to mix the desk was switched to Remix mode. As I continue to document my #miclocker , this post has a classic dynamic stereo pair and a modern ribbon. @sennheiser 421-U5 dynamic stereo pair. These were made in Germany in the 80's with consecutive serial numbers. I like these on toms, horns, bass and electric guitar. They are classic microphones for a reason and are common in most recording studios. @ribbonmics AEA R92 ribbon microphone. It's a modern ribbon that is made to be positioned close to the source. It can take wind blasts (unlike most ribbons) and loud spl's. It's has more high end than your usual ribbon. In this weeks #miclocker post, we have 3 pretty sweet mics from the studio locker. First is a pair of AKG 414EB-P48. These were made in the 80s and feature the nylon ck12 capsule. When I got the first one, I loved it so much that I had to find another that matched well for a pair. I was able to find another with a close serial number, only 160 units apart, 24019/ 24179. These were most likely made within days of each other. They match perfectly in freq response for capturing stereo sources. I love these on any source! Second is an Electro-Voice 635a. It's an omni directional dynamic microphone from the 70's. The grill has a dent, however it doesn't affect the sound. These were widely used for broadcast along with studio applications due to it's bright, yet natural tone. When you watch press conferences, interviews, etc from the 70's, you can see these in action frequently.
