Just got this gorgeous little AKG D24 in from an unknown seller in JP. It's probably from the 60's but the decal with the serial # has long ago peeled off, so we're just guessing.This mic sounds absolutely great! This and the D19 have a cool bass roll-off wheel under the basket that works a treat. I'm planning to throw this on a snare drum and see if I love it more than my beloved Sennheiser MD441. The R2R Mic Locker is open for a bunch of mic tests today. I went through about 7 microphones and did a close, medium and room placement. For ribbons I have a Royer R-10 & vintage RCA 74b Junior, the dynamics are the Shire SM57, Philips EL-6020 and Beyer M55. I also tried out a few crazy old crystal microphones that came with reel to reel recorders I’ve parted out. Some of them really blew me away. Sennheiser MD408 late 1960’s Swan-neck microfoon. Sounds great for electric guitar and for vocals. There’s a lot op people who say that it had the same cap as the MD409, but after doing quite some digging I am not able to confirm this, The cap might be the same, but the diaphragm is in fact slightly smaller. The sound is also slightly different from an 409 as in, the low end is a little less dominant while it does have that sweet midrange and clear rounded high-end. It’s a variation of the Neumann U67 on steroids and IMO blows the U67 - vintage or remake - out of the water, developed for the French ORTF, 300 copies were made since 1966. Especially made by Neumann for the « l’Office de Radio-Télévision Française (French TV and Radio Broadcast 1964>1974), the ORTF imposed requirements on the supply voltage of microphones. The critical noise of the EF86 tube in the U67 did not meet these requirements. To satisfy the German IRT and French ORTF, Neumann developed the M269/M367 and the EF86 tube was swapped for one of the best triode vacuum tube ever made, the Telefunken AC701K manufactured in Ulm factory. All AC701 tubes with the 03 last digits/revision level match the AC701 ’K’ specs. The last two digits in the date code represent the design revision number, with 03 being the final version for the AC701. Since 1965 Telefunken only made frame grid AC701 (same as the « K » version) so there was no need to specially mark them since they were all « K » versions by that time. I made a few upgrades here: I replaced the output capacitor C9 (on schematic) for a bigger and polypropylene 1µf 250V capacitor, C7 electrolytic capacitor with an Elma Silmic II. Low, low noise, fabulous sounding, beautiful open top end, more versatile than a U47 and less dark than a U67. The critical noise of the EF86 tube in the U67 did not meet these requirements. To satisfy the German IRT and French ORTF, Neumann developed the M269/M367 and the EF86 tube was swapped for one of the best triode vacuum tube ever made, the Telefunken AC701K manufactured in Ulm factory. All AC701 tubes with the 03 last digits/revision level match the AC701 ’K’ specs. The last two digits in the date code represent the design revision number, with 03 being the final version for the AC701. Since 1965 Telefunken only made frame grid AC701 (same as the « K » version) so there was no need to specially mark them since they were all « K » versions by that time. I made a few upgrades here: I replaced the output capacitor C9 (on schematic) for a bigger and polypropylene 1µf 250V capacitor, C7 electrolytic capacitor with an Elma Silmic II. Low, low noise, fabulous sounding, beautiful open top end, more versatile than a U47 and less dark than a U67.
