Don’t forget tick prevention! 💊💦 📿 This year we have had 5 cases of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in one month. Two cases in cats and three in dogs. Last year we had a total of 22 cases during april-september (16 dogs and 6 cats).🕷️ Anaplasma is a bacteria 🧫 that spreds through ticks. We see them in the neutrophils (white blood cells) like small round but fragmented light purple inclusions. They can cause asymptomatic diease, but when we see them in the clinic, the animal has a high fever, is letargic and often inappent. In dogs the CRP is high and they often have low plateles. Sometimes neutrophilia with a leftshift, but not always. Cats often just have a high SAA. It's been a while since I’ve shared a case study in cytology. This time, I'm sharing a case of cryptococcosis in a cat! Cutie is a 3-year-old male cat who, a few months ago, developed multiple swellings on his head, right forelimb, back, and near the base of his tail. Under the microscope, several round fungal bodies about 15 to 20 micrometers in size were visible. They have an unstained thick capsule and exhibit narrow budding in the lower right corner. No special staining is needed; cytology alone can directly confirm a cryptococcosis infection. Cryptococcosis Mini-Classroom: 🕊️ Stay away from pigeons: Cryptococcosis is caused by Cryptococcus, and cats often encounter this fungus in bird droppings, especially from pigeons. 🍃 Environmental Presence: This fungus thrives in environments rich in decaying organic matter, making outdoor and stray cats more susceptible. 🫁 Inhalation is the Primary Route: Cats typically contract the infection by inhaling fungal spores, which can lead to a primary respiratory infection. 😵💫 Variable Symptoms: Symptoms may include nasal discharge, sneezing, skin lesions, and swollen lymph nodes. This week a flatcoated retriver🐶 came in to the clinic. She was lethargic, inappetent and urinating blood. She had newly been to poland where she had got a lot of ticks. The veterinary suspected Babesia, which is a parasite closely related to the malaria parasite, that infects and hurts the red blood cells.🩸In the red blood cells we found inclusion bodies of it. It´s the round to oval teardrop formed things you see in the pictures. The parasite spreads through ticks🕷️, but not from the species that you can find in Sweden. A 9 years old cat was admitted due to inappetence and vomiting. The abdomen was ultrasounded to check for foreign objects or other causes that could explain the symptoms. Unfortually they found enlarged lymph nods in the abdomen. Samples were taken of the nodes (fine needle aspirate). The samples showed that the cat had Large Granular Lymphocyte (LGL) -lymphoma. This is an uncommon subtype of lymphoma (cancer in the lymph nodes). It’s called LGL because the lymphocytes have small red granula in the cytoplasma. Unfortually this has no good prognosis so the cat was put to sleep. #lymphoma #vetcytology #largegranularlymphocytes #cytologyveterinary

This is from an older bearded collie that had a lump on the outside of the throat. She had difficult swallowing. This is what we saw: these clustering cells on the location near thyroidea made us suspect a thyroid carcinoma. Tumors in this location are often malignant tumors in dogs. This was an old dog and the lump was hard to remove by surgery, therefore the dog was put to sleep. A very interesting case! #thyroidcarcinoma #vetcytology

I think this is a good one to focus on when starting out as a new graduate. You'll be fresh out of university and know the protocols better than those who have been in practice for several years. Another example: ear cytology. It has become very common practice in the UK to start a patient on ear drops without checking if they are indicated first. If you get into the habit, and explain to the owners why you are doing this it will pave the way for others to follow and also likely contribute to a better success rate with your treatment plans. Red blood cells contains small blue bodies. This artifact has been probably created durind smear preparation. Pink background coloration is caused by anticoagulant (heparin) added to the blood. Krevní nátěr hroznýše královského (Boa constrictor). Je zde patrný lymfocyt s bazofilní cytoplazmatickou inkluzí, která utlačuje a deformuje jádro. Tento nález je vysoce suspektní pro IBD (inclusion body disease). Metodou PCR bylo IBD u tohoto hroznýše později potvrzeno. Blood smear of common boa (Boa constrictor). The lymphocyte with basophilic cytoplasmatic inclusion is visible. The inclusion compress and deform the lymphocyte nucleus. This finding is highly suspicious for IBD (inclusion body disease).
