Philip the ring-necked cock pheasant and Phylis the hen have a habit of peering through windows, beaks to the glass, asking to be fed. It was a treat to be able to observe them closely, and I couldn't resist the challenge of drawing the cock pheasant's stunning plumage. On my drawing board this week - a monochrome portrait with strong lighting. I was really drawn to the strong values - lights and darks - in the reference photo. Additional challenges have been the range of textures - different fabrics, smooth skin, soft focus behind. I wanted to try a warm grey palette on this one. Really enjoying it so far. The gorgeous Millie completed! On my previous post I mentioned I’ve used a new paper for this piece that I’m now claiming as my favourite 😍 It’s the Canson Moulin Du Roy hot pressed watercolour paper! It’s the closest to the old Fabriano I’ve found. It’s super smooth but not too slippery, and blends like a dream 😌 I think my hunt is finally over! But I will continue to test out new papers and experiment for fun here and there, I’d love to try pastelmat next ✍🏼

Guess what? After looking in my email spam box 🤦 I found out my art piece, the 'River Nith Otters,' decided to take matters into their own paws and sneak back to their roots! Turns out, they've been selected for TALP Open Exhibition which is right where they first came to life during a demo session at the UK Colour Pencils Society's tent at Patchings Art Festival back in 2022. “The Snuggle” Colour Pencil A2 (42x59.4cm) The third drawing in my sleeping dogs collection features the beautiful Robin. Robin is happiest having an afternoon nap on the sofa, with his legs up in the air and cosy blanket. He loves running around causing trouble so needs good naps to keep his energy levels up! Quite often he will be found curled up asleep with a shoe or other household object. There were a few challenges in this piece - as well as there being lots of different colours and textures, most of the background was blurred with only Robin’s face and foreground in focus, which meant lots of blending and soft edges. Just look at this happy, smiling face. This is beautiful Mythos, who found his lovely owner in Crete when he was a pup. He was such fun to draw but I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t be able to capture his spirit and beauty enough as I took various parts from different photos. That smile had to be in it of course, but also the one ear up, one ear down which was very ‘him’. I have heard from his owner that he was a little character and hopefully you can see that from my drawing. Sadly, Mythos is no longer with us, so this memorial portrait will hopefully enable his family to always look at this boy’s happy smiling face and remember the lovely life he had with them. I have a big soft spot for Mythos even though I never met him in person as my two dogs are also rescues from Crete. I drew this very special & meaningful portrait of sweet little hamster Elphie having a cuddle, for a lovely lady & friend. She is absolutely delighted and said: “…I know how good you are, which is why I trusted you with this, but it’s different when it’s so personal. I see your previous pictures next to the photo and I think it’s identical, but people always think any dog of the same breed looks like your dog, and they look nothing like your dog to you! There are just little things that only you notice, and you see their character etc. So it’s different looking at it from a photo and looking at it from the owners perspective But you’ve captured her perfectly, it’s not that the markings match, it’s that it’s actually Elphie It was definitely the right choice of photograph, because you’ve actually captured the moment…” I couldn’t wish for a better outcome. ‘Seal at Horsey, Norfolk’ I finished this little guy today. The reference photo was taken by my husband at the Horsey Gap grey seal colony a few years ago. In winter, it’s a magical sight - the gentle sandy beach with seals as far as you can see, with pups dotted in the dunes. We were well behind the roped off area to keep us and seals safe. This little guy was drawn with coloured pencils on a surface called Pastelmat. It’s A4 sized. Shih tzu are one of the oldest breeds on the planet 🌍 🙀 People commonly associate the Shih Tzu with China, but they actually came from China’s western neighbor, Tibet, which was a sovereign nation until the 1950s. Tibet likely sent dogs to the Chinese royalty as gifts. The Chinese then bred them with Pekingese or Pugs to create the modern-day Shin Tzu. The kestrel, from the falcon family, is always a treat to spot. A familiar sight in Richmond park, they will sometimes swoop past close enough for me to catch a glimpse of their stunning plumage. They may be the second most common bird of prey here in the UK (behind the buzzard) but the population has fallen by half since 1970, placing them on the amber conservation list. Decline factors are likely due to agricultural intensification which has reduced field vole numbers, the kestrel's favourite food. They need to eat 4-8 times a day, preying on rodents, bats, reptiles and amphibians and can often be seen using their distinctive hunting technique, fanning out their tail feathers to hover at a height of around 10-20 metres over open spaces. Their fiercely sharp eyesight allows them to spot a beetle 50 metres away and they can also see ultraviolet light helping them to detect the fluorescent urine trails left by voles, giving them a road map to the animal's location. Amazing! This one is a male, distinct from the female by grey feathers on his head and tail. She has plumage in shades of brown all over but is still beautiful!
