In expressive arts sessions, we don't directly "work on" the problem; rather, we "work with" the resources available. To enable context, at the beginning of the session, the focus is on the things that work, exceptions and unique outcomes within the problematic situation. On the knowledge that person or group learned or skill they developed in dealing with the difficulty, and on the vision of a better future. It doesn't mean that the problem itself is neglected. It's about the "phenomenon of the also": if there is a day, the night is "also" present (Paolo Knill, 2005). The art-making becomes a play container, where we decenter from the issue and step into the not-knowing. We direct our focus to the here-and-now experience. This distancing from narrow fixation creates more space for discovering perspectives, insights and new ways of approaching the situation. As mentioned in my previous posts, we tap into the capacities of our imagination, body, mind, and group field dynamics. It happens that after shifting away from preconceived views, you, as the client might reframe the problem itself, leading to a new understanding of what needs to be addressed. Resource-oriented consulting considers the client as an expert in their situation, and given a supportive environment, they will discover their strengths and what they are searching for. The work involves identifying, activating, and cultivating these inherent strengths and resources. This approach contributes to long-term resilience since it builds individual and group capacities, and empowers them to take ownership of their transformation process. 🌟As a reflective activity,🌟if you find yourself in a situation causing distress, remember whether there was a time when things were slightly better.
