Welcome to #TeacherTuesdays — your introduction to the fabulous Teaching Artists working to start our Sistema Toronto students on their lifelong musical journey. This week, allow us to introduce Felipe: a passionate and dedicated teaching artist from our Parkdale, Lambton Park, and Yorkwoods centres. Felipe is violinist, conductor, and teacher with a truly impressive musical career. He holds degrees from The University of Toronto, Boston Conservatory and University San Francisco de Quito, and is currently Doctor of Musical Arts Candidate at U of T, where he focuses on Art Music from Ecuador with the purpose of promoting under-represented music in Canada and the English-speaking world. Beyond academia, Felipe performs with several major ensembles in Toronto, including the Ontario Philharmonic, Ontario Pops Orchestra, Esprit Orchestra, and Toronto Artists Symphony Orchestra, amongst others. He was recently featured as a soloist with the Ontario Pops Orchestra, and is currently the Music Director and conductor of the Durham Chamber Orchestra. During the pandemic lockdowns of 2020, Felipe was featured on CBC's Front-Line Heroes series for his Balcony Concerts, during which he would play his violin daily on his balcony to delight his neighbours and keep spirits high during a challenging time. Felipe has also been offered a coveted place at the Teaching Artist Training Institute's (TATI) Learning Retreat! In June, he will join 25 total Teaching Artists from 23 organizations across the US and Canada for TATI's Retreat Week in Miami, during which attendees will attend specialized workshops, visit and teach at Miami Music Project's summer camp, and collaborate with their peers. This year's learning will focus on Classroom Management, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Social Emotional Learning & Healing-Centered Practices, and Large Group Rehearsal Techniques. Things have been impossibly busy the past week. 🥲 Had a double last Thursday where I went from playing a private party to performing at a large corporate gig. That Friday, I went over some of my classical technique in a lesson (and watched the final @anberlin Livestream from home 🤞) Saturday I had a rehearsal followed by a concert with @cathedralbluffsorchestra ; Sunday, I had a FULL DAY in London at the coolest @canadiantire store ever.
