An absolute highlight of the year thus far is ILLINOISE that we experienced as the exclamation point on the first week of May. @nytimes chief theater critic Jesse Green used the phrase “pretty much perfect” in his review. I emphatically agree with that summation. I had no idea who @sufjan Stevens was before committing to see this show. Until a day or two before we were in the audience, I had never heard the album that is the basis of the show. I only knew it was dance based theater, something I love and that it features two magical @danceonfox SYTYCD alums, @rickyubeda11 and @itsgabydiaz and that it’s choreographed by @justin_peck . I was in based on dance and dancers. I got so much more and weeks later I am still talking about it and every few days, I find myself on @spotify hitting play on the album. If you are in NYC between now and August 10th when the limited run ends, don’t miss this show!! And once you’ve experienced it, let me know your thoughts. I cannot express how sad I am at how short lived the @lempickamusical run was on Broadway. I’ve seen every musical to come out this year but two and this was one of my favorites! I had no idea what this biomusical was about going into it so at intermission I could not wait to find out what happened in the second act. I knew something was wrong when they were holding us outside and the show started late, so as I opened my Playbill I discovered that I had both understudy’s for Lempicka and Rafaela who both did a fantastic job. I enjoyed the show so much I decided I wanted to go back to see @edenespinosa and @amberiman_ even before they got their Tony noms. I thought for sure George Abud would also get a nomination as he deserved it as well. I couldn’t believe it when they announced the closing for May 19, the first show I went to, less than two weeks before the announcement, was completely packed with a very jazzed up crowd. Thankfully I was in town to go again during its final weekend and I’m so glad I did, Amber and Eden and were amazing and deserved their Tony noms. The audience was so into the cast and show and I loved the show even more! There is clearly a fan base for it. I cannot wait for a soundtrack to come out, the music is SO good! Jim is truly a gem. He was so sweet, so kind, and so appreciative. He is a beautiful soul. A legendary man. He’s absolutely brilliant in theater. / On Stage 🎭 / “Illinoise,” a sensational new Broadway musical where the actors don’t sing just dance has recently debuted and it’s goood! So good that it that it opened without previews a couple of days before Tony nominations and got two. Washington DC’s Justin Peck (with the mic above) directed and choreographed the unique 90-minute dance theater piece based on 2005 folk album “Illinois”. Billed as “a new Broadway musical,” it challenges genre conventions: the songs advance the plot but are sung by the three vocalists, while the cast consists entirely of dancers. Crafted by Peck and Pulitzer-winning playwright (Fairview) Jackie Sibblies Drury (👋🏾👋🏾👋🏾), “Illinoise” tells the story of Henry, who gathers with strangers in a field to share stories as a form of group therapy. It is based on the 1951 play I Am a Camera by John Van Druten, which in turn was based on the 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. Edward John David “Eddie” Redmayne OBE is an English actor. He has received various accolades, including an Academy Award, a Tony Award, a BAFTA Award, and two Olivier Awards. Redmayne began his professional acting career in West End theatre starring in productions of The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? (2004), for which he gained a nomination for an Olivier Award, Red (2009–2010), which won him that award, and Richard II (2011–2012). He made his Broadway debut in the transfer of Red, earning a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He starred as The Emcee in a West End revival of Cabaret in 2022, earning a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
