So good that it that it opened without previews a couple of days before Tony nominations and got two. Washington DC’s Justin Peck (with the mic above) directed and choreographed the unique 90-minute dance theater piece based on 2005 folk album “Illinois”. Billed as “a new Broadway musical,” it challenges genre conventions: the songs advance the plot but are sung by the three vocalists, while the cast consists entirely of dancers. My life had a season where I listened to Sufjan Stevens constantly, saw as many of his concerts as I could, even flew all the way to California to see him at All Tomorrow’s Parties (the festival where I realized that I was NOT a festival person). When his album Illinois came out, I thought it was a masterpiece. Years later and I almost forgot but this new incarnation of the album - now transformed into a glorious dance theater piece - brought it all back. I couldn’t stop smiling (except for the times when the musical deliberately strikes a more pensive/tragic note). To see old work made new by talented artists…last time I had this feeling in theater was Metamorphoses by Marie Zimmerman. Congratulations to #justinpeck and all his collaborators for this inventive, exuberant production! Congratulations to Sufjan Stevens and the entire creative team! Illinoise, the recently-mounted musical adaptation of Sufjan Stevens’ 2005 concept album Illinois, received four Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, and Best Lighting Design. Illinois was adapted into a dance-based musical, Illinoise, directed and choreographed by Justin Peck with a companion book written by Jackie Sibblies Drury and Peck. It premiered at Bard College on June 23, 2023, and a Chicago production opened at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre on February 3, 2024. The show features new arrangements for a live band and three voices, and aims to “lead [the audience] on a mighty journey through the American heartland, from campfire storytelling to the edges of the cosmos”. It debuted in New York in March 2, 2024, at Park Avenue Armory. I’ve been anticipating ‘Illinoise’ since its sold out run at the Park Avenue Armory and it did not disappoint. I’ve always been a Sufjan Stevens fan, and the album ‘Illinoise’ has such a unique sound. Famed choreographer Justin Peck worked with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury to develop this phenomenal production that takes the audience on an emotional journey. ‘Illinoise’ at its core is a coming-of-age tale that deals with a multitude of different topics. An extremely effective blend of live music and dance. I’ve truly never seen this kind of storytelling executed so well. Ricky Ubeda is giving a tour de force performance alongside the talented Ben Cook, Gaby Diaz, Ahmad Simmons and a host of very talented dancers. Everyone has incredible chemistry. The live vocalists (Elijah Lyons, Shara Nova and Tasha Vietz-Vanlear) are superb and so in sync with the dancers. Masterful direction and choreography by Justin Peck. The design team has crafted a gorgeous production that makes fantastic use of lighting and sound. The set is very cleverly designed as well. Moments made me laugh, moments made me cry, moments left me absolutely breathless. This is a show unlike anything you’ve ever seen on Broadway. We’ve had dance musicals before but this is by far the best I’ve seen. I love how they have a little journal in every Playbill to give you an understanding of the show itself. I urge you to see the show from the mezzanine to get the full stage picture. I’ll be sitting close to the stage next time to get a different perspective. I personally find it thrilling that this show opened right at the cutoff for this season. I expect a lot of Tony wins for this production. The show is only running for 16 weeks so I would grab tickets as soon as possible. 4/28/24: @illinoiseonstage. I must say — I was REALLY skeptical about this one. I had no idea what it was or what it was about going in, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The day I’m posting this is international dance day, and this show definitely deserves some credit for the dance moves, directed and choreographed by @justin_peck. The show has no spoken dialogue and is all told through interpretative dance, but it does the job and tells a captivating and moving story. All of the music is from @sufjan’s 2005 album “Illinois” (hence the name) and is performed by vocalists and an onstage band.
