Post #4: Tires! 🛞 Save these posts if you want to own a tank someday. ⚠️Shaming will result in an end to this series.⚠️ Y'all voted for tires in my stories, which is a great choice because there's lots that I've learned! 🛞 Don't go to TiresPlus, or Walmart or Menards... Go to a Trailer or Tractor Supply Store. I googled that and found one I love called Hanna Trailer. The reason is because you need trailer tires, not car tires. Trailer tires are made to sit for long periods of time, car tires aren't. Trailer tires will prevent dry rot better and they are engineered for towing. 🛞 When my tire blew out, I replaced them with car tires because it was all I had access to at the time. Then, I had to replace those with trailer tires from Hanna Trailer once I knew better. The mistake cost me $300. Buy trailer tires from the get go. 🛞 There's different "ply's" to your tires. 6 ply indicates a 10,000lb weight, just make sure your ply matches your trailer weight. 🛞 Make sure your rim size matches your tire size (15", 14", whatever) 🛞 There's different lug nut configurations. Commonly, it is 5 lug nuts with 4.5 inch spacing. That's what mine are. But make sure when you're ordering rims your lug nut and spacing matches the one you're buying. 🛞 Try to find a place that will sell you the tires mounted on the rims already. This was impossible at TiresPlus, but very easy at Hanna Trailer. The reason is, TiresPlus won't put someone else's tire onto your rim. You had to buy both from them, and they didn't sell trailer tires. (You see my headache?) So... Just go to a trailer store right off the bat and you won't have to deal with this. 🛞 Get a spare. 🛞 Get spare lug nuts. A common hate crime to queer performers is loosening lug nuts because legal liability is hard to trace. This is called a "harness" and you can Google the make and model of your truck + "trailer brake light harness." Attaching the is sometimes a pain in the ass. Uhaul's YouTube has a million amazing tutorials. 🚚 You need to ensure you know the towing capacity of your truck and the weight of the trailer/tank empty. Never ever tow a trailer full of water. 🚚 You need chains. They're called "tow chains" and you need to ask the tank owner how long the trailer tongue is (the part that attaches to your truck on the back) so that your chains are long enough. They have to be long enough so you can make 45° turns without running out of chain length. The chains hook on to your truck in case the ball hitch fails, the trailer won't go loosey goosey. Cross the chains under the tongue in an "X" so that the chains catch and prevent the tongue from dragging on the ground if it does fall off the hitch. I got my chains at Menards. 🚚 Take turns extra wide and slow. 🚚 You can check that the ball hitch is secured correctly by raising the jacks on your trailer. If the butt of the truck goes up WITH the trailer, the ball hitch is properly secured to your truck. 🚚 Make sure you have the right size ball hitch and ball hitch mount. Usually 2" is pretty standard. There are ball hitch mount converters that can make a, say, 3" mount into a 2" mount if you need that. Again, Uhaul sells this stuff pretty cheap.
