Period blood isn't dirty. Contrary to popular belief, menstrual blood isn’t rejected body fluids or the body’s way of flushing out toxins. The menstrual blood is a combination of blood, remains of an unfertilized egg, and the mucus membrane the uterus prepared for the fertilized egg to attach to. As long as you don't have any bloodborne disease, no toxins are released in the menstrual flow. In an article published by African Health Organization in, a 14-year old Kenyan girl was called "dirty" by her teacher for having her period in class and staining her uniform as she couldn't afford sanitary pads. That afternoon, the young girl took her own life. Schoolgirls in Nigeria experience this everyday and this often forces them to skip schools during their periods so they don't get shamed for it. It is heartbreaking to admit but it is true. Some of these girls have been told how dangerous it is to use anything other than sanitary pads and tampons. So they manage to buy pads and to "manage resources" during the days they see their periods monthly, they use the pads for an entire day and even more! This is dangerous as medical practitioners admonish that pads should be changed at least twice a day to avoid odor, bacterial infections, and many more. It was a thrilling experience for us as we visited Orogun High School located in Ibadan, Oyo State, and got to speak to 450 schoolgirls about the importance of menstrual hygiene and sanitary care. After the short seminar, we distributed pads to each of the girls in attendance, much to their delight. Since 2017, I have served on the board of the Sanitary Aid Initiative (@sanitaryaidng) as a founding member and the Fundraising Director. In five years, we have donated 30,000 sanitary pads to 26,000 girls and women in 17 states in Nigeria. The girls who benefit from our work are young girls in public schools, women and girls in Internally Displaced People’s (IDP) camps all over Nigeria. There are 6.5 million girls and women in Nigeria who do not have access to proper sanitary pads in Nigeria. Our work at Sanitary Aid is to provide free sanitary pads to these women and girls, and also teach proper Menstrual Hygiene Management. As pictured here, we held an outreach in September with BCG Lagos at a school in Yaba, Lagos. As Christmas approaches, we are asking the public to donate to our cause to help us reach more girls affected by period poverty.
