Tall Ship Series -series about historical stories about women who sale the seas. Ellen and Helen Gerrish were the wife and daughter of sea captain Edwin Gerrish. They went to sea to witness unimaginable danger. They were recorded in the historic record because of their involvement in a famous Civil War sea battle. The battle they think they were involved in was the Kearsarge and the Confederate Ship Alabama. We often don’t think of sea battles during the Civil War. They existed and so did women on ships. 2 May 1519 - Leonardo Da Vinci died at Cloux Castle in France at the age of 67. Leonardo da Vinci is regarded as one of the greatest artists in history. Leonardo excelled in many areas including drawing, painting, and sculpture. Two of his most famous paintings, and perhaps two of the most famous in the world, include the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Many of da Vinci's drawings and journals were made in his pursuit of scientific knowledge and inventions. His journals were filled with over 13,000 pages of his observations of the world. He drew pictures and designs of hang gliders, helicopters, war machines, musical instruments, various pumps, and more. He was interested in civil engineering projects and designed a single span bridge, a way to divert the Arno River, and movable barricades which would help protect a city in the case of attack. Da Vinci died at Cloux (now Clos-Lucé) in 1519 at age 67. He was buried nearby in the palace church of Saint-Florentin. 1st May - Festival Of Beltane This festival is often commemorated with bonfires, maypoles, dancing, and performing fertility rituals. Beltane is a Celtic word, meaning "the fires of Bel." Bel, likely referred to the Celtic sun god, Belenus. The Celts used to light two bonfires because they believed it would purify themselves, as well as increase their fertility. They would pass cattle between the two fires, with the belief that it would purify the cattle, and ensure the fertility of the herd.
