Do you see what I see? What might at first glance look like a grassy, sloping cliffside over the Pacific Ocean is actually home to hundreds of near-threatened Stellar Sea Lions (not to be confused with California Sea Lions, which are smaller and darker in color)! If you look at the brown rocky (diagonal) strip in the center of the first photo, you can see a whole bunch of them basking there. An even closer (squinty) look at the other two images will reveal a few of them dotting the cliffs on the other side of the cove. We went into the Sea Lion Caves in Florence, Oregon (America’s largest sea cave, which is a privately owned wildlife reserve and bird sanctuary)—which I highly recommend, as you get to learn a lot about them, and also get to see them in their actual caves. Sea lion skeleton in Sea Lion Caves, a connected system of sea caves open to the Pacific Ocean just south of Heceta Head Lighthouse, Oregon. The cave system is at sea level and the ocean continually washes into the main cavern which has a floor area of about 2 acres and a vaulted rock dome about 125 feet high. Southward from the main chamber, a low passage runs 1,000 feet to a sea-level opening. This corridor is flooded at high tide and free of water at low tide. The western entrance is a short, high passage through which the ocean washes at all tide levels. To the north, a third entrance is about 50 feet above the ocean and serves as an elevated observation area where the entire cave system and its wildlife are visible. Lichens, algae, and mineral stains cover the cavern walls with greens, pinks, purples, buffs, and reds on the rough surfaces. The sea level portion of this cave and the sea cliff rocks just outside the cave are the only known mainland rookery and wintering home of the Steller's sea lion and—to a lesser extent—the California sea lion. With a measured length of 1,315 feet, Sea Lion Caves is the longest system of sea caves in the US. They were discovered in 1880 by a local seaman, Captain William Cox, who entered the grotto through the western channel in a small boat on a calm day. Three local businessmen excavated a trail to the caves and opened them up to he public as an attraction in 1932. An elevator has allowed easier access since 1961.

I captured this neat perspective from inside the Sea Lion Caves in Florence, Oregon, which I’ll share about in a few days. This also happens to be the same viewpoint from which I shot the Black Guillemot birds I shared a few days ago! Peeking out of the rocky cliffside over the Pacific Ocean north towards the fog-laden Siuslaw National Forest, you can actually catch a glimpse of the Heceta Head Lighthouse, considered to be one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world (and certainly on the Oregon coast). For those who don’t know, I moved west to work for the Siuslaw NF on the pacific coast of Oregon this summer. I’ve been here just over a month, and I am still overwhelmed by the fact I get to be here. It’s been one of the most fabulous experiences of my life so far. my mom first went down in the sea lion caves in 1963, when she was 10 years old. I took her back this weekend and I’ve never seen her so delighted. I had to keep reminding her not to jump in the elevator, lest we get stuck.
Sea Lion Caves in Florence, Oregon 🦭 This is a neat visit for sure! Known as America’s largest sea cave, Sea Lion Caves is a privately owned wildlife preserve and bird sanctuary, which is a year round home for the Stellar Sea Lion. A few things to note, this is not a zoo or an aquarium so the sea lions come and go as they please. The caves may be empty at certain times of year, so it’s best to call ahead. Although you’ll be almost sure to find sea lions during the winter months since they use the caves as a refuge from the high surf. Another thing to note, is it’s a little stinky in the cave in case that’s something that bothers you 🤷♀️ And one more thing, be sure to check out the exhibits, go up the stairs to see the waterfall and ocean. The idea for Scoops was conceived in the summer of 2023 on a 4500-mile cross country road trip in our 15-passenger van.
