A new turntable with a new MC mono cart has me pulling out all the mono things. This is Sam Rivers’ Contours, with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Chambers. Perhaps this music is best heard in stereo and maybe I should focus on things that were actually recorded specifically for mono first, but what am I supposed to do, it’s the only copy I got and I can’t imagine moving away from this given how clean it is. Contours is not nearly as out as you might expect from Rivers’ later work and actually it’s quite melodic. Each of the musicians have a ton of solo space, and they each play with clarity of tone but also with innovative ideas. The 4th piece’s title, Mellifluous Cacophony, is perhaps emblematic of the album. It’s advanced but it’s also quite pleasant to hear.
