As promised…. A hydraulic power station that you can live in! So what exactly is a hydraulic power station? After exploring the space we have available for venue hire in Wapping, I did some research and was fascinated to find out that in the 1900s London had a high pressure water linkage under the roads which was used to power machinery and lifts across the industrial side of the city. Apparently there are certain manhole covers across London that signify where the former outlets are located (I’m yet to spot one mind you). This particular building was used as the pumping station, as opposed to the boiler rooms used to create the hydraulic pressure, hence the name “The Pump House”. NORWAY DAY 1814 OTD. Celebrations today at the Norwegian Church Rotherhithe and Southwark Park, the day Norway became an independent kingdom. Norway’s national day, Syttende (seventeenth) Mai. Fireworks and children’s events rather than military parades and weaponry. Signing the constitution was in reality a successful attempt to avoid being ceded to Sweden after devastating defeats in the Napoleonic Wars. In an unusual arrangement, Norway and Sweden were separate nations but shared a monarch, King Karl Johan, until 1905, when Prince Carl of Denmark was chosen to be King of an independent Norway, under the name Haakon VII. During the Second World War, King Haakon and the Norwegian government in exile worshipped at the church in Rotherhithe and the church was given the status of pro-cathedral. But there has been a Norwegian church in London since the late 17th century, and a Norwegian community and pastor with special care for nationals working at Norway Dock. The dock is still there, but now a shallow body of water with houses built on pontoons. Street names are a reminder. So too is the golden Viking ship, a weathervane on the church spire. Inside a huge and larger than life statue of St Olav, formidable Viking who converted to christianity. His brother Harald was even more frightening. In ‘King Harald’s Saga’, an opera by Judith Weir (based on C13 saga ‘Heimskringla’, he sings of his exploits: ‘My brother the blessed and holy man Olaf said: Love thine enemies, I say: sever their limbs until they cause no trouble’. St Olives nearby sounds like a nickname Harald gives an effete brother, but is a hospital and a school and a wonderful example of the English failing with a foreign name.
