Keel - Lay Down The Law.. The debut Keel is a masterclass of the early L.A. scene. Raw, in your face and the guitars are so sharp they can cut your jugular. The production from Ron and Mike Varney is primal and keeps the metal edge to the tracks. Marc Ferrari and Bryan Jay were Excellent guitar players and paired well on this album, Barney brought out their best. The tracks, to me, were their height before the commercial era of MCA. Thunder and Lightning, the title, Till Hell Freezes Over, Princess Of Illusion, all Excellent. Rodeado por grandes músicos, Ron Keel poderia ter se abalado com o final repentino do seu primeiro grupo, o Steeler. Além de ter lançado um dos álbuns independentes mais vendidos da história, deu rumo ao estilo em que o Heavy Metal americano estava criando, com bandas como Quiet Riot e Mötley Crüe e Ratt. Se não bastasse, foi aqui que Yngwie Malmsteen ganhou os primeiros holofotes no ocidente, antes de ingressar ao Alcatrazz e consecutivamente se consolidar em carreira solo. O produtor Mike Varney que o diga, pois ganhou muito dinheiro com este trabalho, e viu a possibilidade em investir na carreira do vocalista em seus próximos projetos. Decidido a utilizar o seu sobrenome, Ron lançou “Lay Down The Law”, que foi a porta de entrada para assinar com uma grande gravadora, a A&M Records. Todo esse combo de oportunidades, acompanhava a possibilidade em escolher um novo produtor, e o único nome que veio à sua mente foi o de Gene Simmons, que além de ídolo, tinha não só conhecimento musical, mas de mercado. E não é que com apenas uma ouvida nas demos da banda, o linguarudo não pensou duas vezes? O que ouvimos em “The Right o Rock”, é a simbiose entre as composições de Gene no Kiss e o Heavy Metal em ascensão nos Estados Unidos. As contribuições de Simmons são evidentes em “Easier Said Than Done”, “So Many Girls, So Many Times” que não há nem a necessidade em conferir os créditos. RON KEEL - 4/6-7/2024 • Was incredibly honored to catch Ron Keel’s last hurrah in Los Angeles at the Whisky-A Go Go, on the 40th anniversary TO THE DAY of KEEL’s very first ever show. And not to mention literally meeting the guy. The most down to earth and REAL dude you could ever come across. Keel’s been a major part of my life since I was about 13 when I first discovered them, so this easily solidified itself as a bucket list show. It’s still unreal that this all happened, but I had so much fun whether or not we had to drive almost 4 hours back from L.A. at 3 in the morning lol. Also got to meet Michael Starr which was unexpected but cool, and did NOT expect to see Michael Oliveri from Leatherwolf shredding the bass for WITCH. I would have added a picture but Insta only lets you put 10. One of the best shows I’ve seen.
