In my time of need, and seeking sanctuary, I found an alter worthy of worship – and let me tell you, Raglan Road is the ultimate boozer for a post-shift pint. 🇮🇪 As you’ll know by now, this is Nottingham’s premier Irish pub. The Gaelic roots are planted firmly under Derby Road. There’s never been a patron who has set foot in this venue and regretted it, and when there’s something to celebrate, it’s hard to think of another gaff that gets this boisterous. 🍀 Raglan Road, quite rightly, prides itself on warmth and hospitality. No-one is a stranger once they’ve pulled a stool up to this bar. The crowds that assemble for weekend blowouts, bank holiday bonanzas, and everything in between vary from young to old – a sign that all are welcome here. 🎵 Pumping playlists and live music have become synonymous with this slice of the Emerald Isle. But it’s also a safe-haven for those clocking-off from the grind. During my midweek visit, I found the vibe was perfectly balanced, between chilled and atmospheric. Not many boozers can pull that off, mind. ⚫️ As for the beer, well, what else was I going to order? You can’t indulge yourself in all things Ireland without treating yourself to a scoop of the black stuff. This was a seriously smooth pint, and though I’m not the most refined Guinness connoisseur, I know a grand drop when I’ve got one. 🏆 Not to brag, but I also made a good fist of ‘splitting the G’ while I was there, and made sure at least one of the old boys at the bar saw my achievement. I’m not sure if I can do anything with this talent, but I’ve since added it to my LinkedIn biography. BONUS POINTS: Raglan Road is also home to the only ‘Darts Cave’ in Nottingham. For those of you who have never seen a Ronseal advert, it does exactly what it says on the tin – you descend into the underground of the city, throw a few arrows, and resurface to top-up your pints. Not all of us can visit 24/7… so when missing it, it’s nice to enjoy a copycat recipe at home! 🏠 🍞 Raglan Road’s Irish Brown Bread Courtesy of Central Florida Tourism Collective @attractionsmagazine 1/2 cup Guinness 4 lbs Whole Meal Flour (I used whole wheat) 3/4 lb All-Purpose Flour 1 tbsp salt 1 tbsp baking soda 4 cups rolled oats 4 oz Molasses 2 qts buttermilk Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Place all dry ingredients in a large bowl. 3. Combine all wet ingredients in a separate bowl. 4. Add the wet to the dry in three batches as you mix and fold by hand lightly; the mixture should be quite sticky. 5. Portion into greased or buttered muffin, loaf, or round cake pans. 6. Sprinkle lightly with oats. 7. Bake in the oven until golden brown and it makes a hollow sound when tapped on the bottom—about 20 to 30 minutes. 8. Remove from the pans and cool slightly. 9. Enjoy with Kerrygold Irish butter or Raglan Road’s Guinness Reduction and Olive oil. If you haven’t been to Raglan recently to get yourself one of their in house made stout glazes… you can make it yourself! 🍶 Guinness Reduction 1 pint of Guinness 2 cups of sugar Directions 1. Combine the Guinness and sugar in a large stockpot. 2. Bring to a boil and reduce to simmer until reduced by half (approximately 1 hour). Don’t leave the pot unattended while it comes to a boil, as it could boil over. 3. Remove from the heat and allow to cool at room temperature. 4. Patrick was diagnosed with Celiac Disease when he was 2 and has never missed out on enjoying like a king when we visit.
