124 years ago Maria, Queen of Yugoslavia was born at the Friedenstein Palace, Gotha, Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, German Empire. • Princess Maria of Romania was the 3rd child of Ferdinand I of Romania and Princess Marie of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Maria grew up with 2 older siblings, Carol and Elisabeth, and 3 younger siblings, Nicholas, Ileana, and Mircea (died age 3). Although she was named after her maternal grandmother, Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, she was known as “Mignon” in the family. Maria and her family moved to Romania in 1914 after her parents became King and Queen. She worked as a nurse alongside her mother and sisters during WW1. A few years after the war, Maria met and fell in love with Alexander I of Yugoslavia. They became engaged and married in 1922. Maria became popular with the people of her new country. Her work in charity, the local peasantry, and founding of schools and scholarships to benefit the poor were just a few of her initiatives. She and Alexander had 3 sons: Peter, Tomislav, and Andrew. In 1934, Maria’s husband was assassinated and her 11 year old son, Peter, became king with his uncle Paul acting as regent. Paul gave Maria a hefty allowance for herself and her children, but she donated 3/4 of it to charity. In addition, she continued with her royal duties even as a widow until 1938 when she began suffering from rheumatism. The following year, she moved to England with her 2 younger sons, but had to leave Peter on Yugoslav territory to keep his status as king. She was named Queen Mother of Yugoslavia in 1941. Maria’s son Peter arrived in England after the N*zi invasion of Yugoslavia. Maria wanted to return to stand by her people, but her health kept her from doing so. Instead, she provided relief for Yugoslav prisoners of war through the Red Cross. She used a fake name to keep her from being identified, but was found out anyway. The death of Maria’s grandfather, King Dom João VI, in 1826 sparked a succession crisis in Portugal. The king had a male heir, Dom Pedro, but Pedro had proclaimed the independence of Brazil in 1822 with himself as Emperor. The late king also had a younger son, Infante Dom Miguel, but he was exiled to Austria after leading a number of revolutions against his father and his liberal regime. Due to fears that Portugal and Brazil would reunit, Pedro decided for a more consensual option: he would renounce his claim to the Portuguese throne in favor of his eldest daughter Maria (who was only seven years old), and that she was to marry her uncle Miguel, who would accept the liberal constitution and act as a regent until his niece reached the age of majority. Miguel agree but he immediately over threw his niece/bride and became king. Maria’s first reign was interrupted by the absolutist uprising led by her uncle, fiancé and regent Miguel, who proclaimed himself King of Portugal in 1828. Then began the Liberal Wars that lasted until 1834, the year in which Maria was restored to the throne and Miguel exiled to Germany. On 9 April 1836, Maria married the cultured and able Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. In accordance with Portuguese law, he was proclaimed King Dom Fernando II upon the birth of their first child and heir, Pedro. Portugal avoid the 1848 European revolutions due to a revolutionary insurrection on 16 May 1846, but this was crushed by royalist troops on 22 February 1847. From her first pregnancy at the age of eighteen, Maria II faced problems in giving birth, with prolonged and extremely difficult labor. Maria became obese and her births became even more complicated. On 15 November 1853, thirteen hours after the onset of labor of the stillborn eleventh child Infante Eugénio, Maria II died at the age of 34.

GLOBAL SANTA TANZANIA, 2023 During my visit to Tanzania last December 2023, we conducted our first humanitarian activity with the help of our newly appointed WCH Country Director, Joyce Mmassi. We provided relief donations to an orphanage, the name of which we cannot reveal for privacy reasons. Spending time with children aged between 1 month and 6 years was a touching experience. Witnessing the challenging circumstances the children faced was heart-wrenching, motivating us to return and offer further assistance. Palácio Nacional de Queluz 👑 . . . Le Palais de Queluz faisait partie de la Casa do Infantado, une seigneurie appartenant de fait au deuxième né de la famille royale, assurant ainsi des revenus au prince qui n’était pas destiné à régner. Le « vieux palais » fut considérablement agrandi en 1747 par le prince Pedro, fils de João V et troisième seigneur de la Casa do Infantado. En 1760, l’infant Pedro épousa sa nièce, l’héritière du trône Maria Ire et devint D. Pedro III (1777-1786). Leur mariage fut prétexte à de nouveaux travaux dans ce qui devait devenir la résidence d’été de la famille royale où la cour venait assister à de somptueux bals, courses de chevaux et autres feux d’artifices. En 1794, Queluz devint la résidence officielle de la reine Maria Ire, désormais veuve, suite à l’incendie du Palais Royal d’Ajuda occupé depuis le tremblement de terre (1755). Le prince João VI et son épouse Carlota Joaquina s’y installèrent également, la soudaine démence de la reine Maria faisant d’eux les régents du royaume. En 1807, l’occupation française par les troupes de Napoléon marqua le départ précipité de la famille royale au Brésil et ce n’est qu’en 1821 que João VI revint au Portugal. Il avait laissé la régence du Brésil à son fils Pedro qui en déclara l’indépendance en 1822, devenant ainsi Pedro Ier du Brésil. Ce dernier sera également - et brièvement - Pedro IV de Portugal après la mort de son père, mais conscient de l’impossibilité de réunir de nouveau la couronne du Portugal et celle du Brésil, il abdiquera en faveur de sa fille, Maria II. Vainqueur de la guerre civile qui s’ensuivit contre son frère Miguel, le roi usurpateur, Pedro s’éteignit en 1834 au Palais de Queluz, dans la chambre même où il était né en 1798.
